I got adopted by a semi-feral cat with a collar on it several years ago. The cat was a skinny bag of bones, the collar was old and it became obvious with his reaction to normal household routines and noises, that he hadn't been looked after by anyone for ages. I doubt you've 'stolen' that cat from anyone. Congrats on getting a tabby, he's got lovely big expressive eyes.
