Just wanted to say you and your new cat are awesome. Many years ago I adopted what I thought was a "kitten". The shelter was going to put her down because of antisocial behavior. Anwyays, turns out she was between 3-5 years old, real tiny from malnourishment and having litters early.  She's a little bitey (only with me, very gentle with my husband) and very loud, but she sneaks into bed and sleeps on my stomach every night.  Image above is her now at 13-15 (?) - she's getting happier and more social every day so keep at it.
