I knew you were trouble
when you flew in

Hi, so, basically, the title sums it up. I love my car dearly but she's old enough to vote and I've put more money into repairing her than I spent buying her on Craigslist two years ago and every time I put out one fire two more erupt. Not literally, thank god. Yet. But given as two of the windows recently decided to no longer work, this summer the fire was not for lack of trying, I have been roasting alive. She has 222 thousand miles and I put another 130 miles on every week just going to and from work. Basically I've reached the point where even though I am A Poor I desperately need to replace her because even financing a five thousand dollar early-oughts vehicle will be better for me, my wallet, and frankly, my sanity.

And so I've been looking at CarFax and trying to find something appropriate and affordable because every time I pay to fix one service light weeks later another two pop on and I'm at the end of my rope. I've been filtering to cars that have no reported accidents/damage and have a service history. I've been googling to try to figure out what the gently caress I should know and look for and look out for but I'm really anxious that I'm going to gently caress up and just end up with a car even more stressful than my current one. When I walk into the used car dealership I want to seem like I know what I'm doing, because right now I feel as though I sure as poo poo don't, and as a car-stupid single lady I am pretty frightened of getting myself robbed blind.

I'm sorry that this OP is so vague, but, what should I be looking for in a reliable used car? Is there anything I should I be on the alert for? If there's any information I can provide that can help my insanely unspecific plea for help please tell me and I'll do so.

I'll keep that in mind. Not even being sarcastic. I've been told Toyota and Honda are the way to go -- my current one is an Acura and, I mean, given everything, she's been doing a pretty loving good job.

What have you assholes done now?
I'm not entirely sure a bird should be driving a motor vehicle to begin with, but if you insist...

I would generally look for something that has been mass produced as an economy car, and is not within the first couple of years of production. Getting all the engineering kinks out of an engine, drivetrain, chassis, is done within the first couple of years.

After that, it's mostly making sure the history is there, and personal preference. Look private party and source car loans from your bank. That way you meet the previous owner and have a shot at getting a feel for the person that drove your new car.

More than that, I'd personally recommend something Japanese and entry-level from the early 2000s. Whatever meets your personal needs in a car might stop you from buying a Honda Fit, but the production methods and reliability most likely won't change much between it and a Honda Pilot.

Thank you both :) I did see the A/T thread linked in the AI rules but I decided to post here first because I don't have specific car-related queries -- yet -- I just want to not look like the total car dumb-rear end I am and get hosed over. General advice and guidance sort of thing. Which within a handful of posts has already been offered, thank you so much. :h:

Japanese and early-oughts is actually what I was aiming for to begin with, I'm an insane person that actually quite likes the general early-oughts car aesthetic so it works out quite happily for me. There are several BMWs listed, however, that seem like good deals... is the bad rap I've heard regarding beamers true?

Again I'm sorry if I'm being a general dumbass. I'll take these question to the A/T thread if you all would think that's wiser.

Honestly you'd be better off in that thread because you generally aren't too sure what you want or need, the template in the OP is pretty much there for people like yourself to figure out what you should get. Your budget and needs will pretty much determine what will be recommended to you.

Really just finding something well maintained is the trick. Most any basic 4 cylinder japanese car from the mid 2000s that has been well cared for will be your best bet. Is carrying around junk for your birb a concern?

It's a '99 Acura RL. I've basically just been replacing piece after piece for the last two years since I purchased it and random other poo poo keeps breaking, a whole bunch of lights are on where mechanics shrug and go 'it's the sensors,' she

sorry IT has randomly stalled on the highway three different times and also a bonus fourth time leaving the bank parking lot, to which the mechanics shrug and go 'I dunno mang,' two of the windows stopped working this summer, an O2 sensor is out and it's up for inspection this month but the most trustworthy mechanic of the lot won't give me an estimate on how much it'll cost because he doesn't know which sensor, I guess.

I also just moved to a new city and so now I've gone from a flock of useless mechanics to not having any local mechanic I know is a good and/or cool dude.

e: honestly though the 4-cylinder early/mid oughts Japanese car thing was probably largely what I needed to know. I was just worried there were some other subtle traps of used-car-buying I was unaware of, like never buy something over arbitrary X mileage or make sure it's had less than Y owners.

Oh hey, the RL was the successor to the Acura Legend, one of my first cars! I loved that comfy grandpas boat of a car.

Edit: A mid 2000s 4cyl accord would be my recommendation for a new car that somewhat matches what you have now. Obviously you want something that has fewer miles and has passed through fewer hands, but condition of the actual vehicle plays a big role and there are some gotchas like don't ever believe "JUST NEEDS x part" and don't buy a mechanics personal car. But the bfc thread should be very helpful when it comes to that. :)

Elmnt80
Dec 30, 2012

At the mileage a mid 2000s car will be at, an ex rental isn't really any different. My mazda 6 was an ex rental, which somehow means I wound up with literally every option that was available. And someone owned it for 60k miles between the rental agency and me, which is good enough for making sure all the fuckery was taken care of. All I had to deal with was lovely po fuckery! :suicide:

This. An 03-07 (seventh generation) Accord will do you no wrong. Avoid the sixth generation (98-02) like the plague, though; bad transmissions, ignition failures, and fuel delivery problems abound in those.

Yup. Coworker has an 04 coupe with 190k+ miles on it and it still runs like a top. And somehow outruns my mazda, despite me supposedly having 50 more hp from the factory, weighing less and 70k fewer miles. And gets better gas mileage. I want one. :(
