I think they taking two years between the last release helped a ton. This isn’t a perfect game or anything but it’s a lot better compared to Syndicate (which already wasn’t half bad).

I’m hoping they continue the two-three year cycle for AC games because if they gently caress it up and just release a new one that’s similar to this one next year drat :(

I can pretty much guarantee you that the next AC game will be complete poo poo. if it makes you feel better it will probably be made be a completely different team (or set of teams) than this one, but yeah they will gently caress it up, that's what they do. on the other hand whatever comes out 2-3 games from now will be good again.

I know you're right, I've played through all the AC games and there's a ton of poo poo there.

Just wishful thinking on my part.

I wish they didn’t remove the Codex for this game. I actually liked reading all that stuff.

Oh and speaking of things the game doesn’t clearly say you can change your hairstyle and remove the beard in the gear menu.

For PS4 it’s R2+Triangle for beard and L2+Triangle for hair. I’m very sure the game doesn’t mention this either.

That at least seems more like an Easter egg, since Bayek's hair and beard change with the story.

They make it sound like the shanties are more the sailors singing about your own accomplishments so it’s a shanty kind of but not like Black Flag.

After shadow of mordor came out I was like "AC should just copy this wholesale" (I'm not the only one) and it seems like while they didn't copy it note for note, they definitely learned some things.

AC 2-4 were too movie-game, like metal gear solid 4. Odyssey is like MGS5. I can just have fun and plaaaaaay. The game doesn't get in my way with its bs all the time.

Are... there any forced stealth segments in this? Or escort quests? That was one of the worst things about past games and I haven't seen anything like that yet. But I also haven't gotten stupid far yet.

I don't really remember much of any forced stealth bits. You don't even have to play it like that if you don't want to.

Finished up The Hidden Ones finally. It was pretty good. This is the first time I attempt any of the DLC’s for any AC game since I’m usually done with the main game before the DLC comes out and I have no desire to even bother going back. I figure Pharaoh’s Curse is worth going through as well?

Ok, so the person who kills Bayek's son is clearly Bayek, right? The guy in the mask just dodges out of the way because he didn't want to get knifed, as one would. Is that what happens? Did I understand that scene correctly?

You’re right that’s what you saw.

Unity I thought had one of the strongest forms of the parkour system they have used. The team never went back to it. Loved the 1:1 depiction of France also but the main issue of that game is that nothing really exciting happens. From what I can remember when I played it they just never do anything really good with the time period. Kind of a shame really.

I did however enjoy AC Rogue which ties itself in to Unity a little.

Yes. I usually much prefer female protagonists, but when I'd spent so much of the game wondering when Bayek would realize she did not love him and was wrong about everything, I was really expecting a 'get away from me you psycho' option at the end. Getting to play her instead was uncomfortable.

It never felt like Aya never loved Bayek to me, if anything it felt more like she needed to move on after the death of their son. I guess if anything I was hoping Bayek and her would have a honest heart to heart about it and he’d realize it then. I felt like their relationship for the most part was one of the higher points of the game.

Is stealth kinda broken in this? I'm moving slow and sneaking through high grass but I'm still getting spotted. I don't even get the slow warning, they're instantly aggroed. Guards don't seem to pace around, or they stand in groups facing each other. Is it a gear weight thing or something making me more noticeable? I could take down whole forts in Odyssey with no one noticing but in Valhalla it feels like I can only get one or two silent kills before it's axe time.

What difficulty do you have stealth set to?

I really don’t have much of an interest in doing the stealth route this time around. Maybe I’m not far enough with the story or something but it just feels like Ubisoft has been trying to downplay the stealth portions of the game so much. I felt it in Odyssey but with Valhalla it’s kind of off the charts to me.

So is it a bug I’m gonna have to deal with for the whole game or is that an intentional design choice? I’m definitely not starting over because playing this game doesn’t feel good enough to redo anything.

I think it’s a bug because it’s not something that was present in Origins or Odyssey. I might go ahead and put the game on hold for a while until some bugs are cleaned up. I have Yakuza 7 to look forward to in the time being.

I forgot there was a stealth difficulty setting so I'll mess with that and see if it does anything. But yeah it feels like they don't expect you to do anything stealthy this time. There are less hiding places and less unobserved paths to sneak through.

Makes it even funnier that they made Eivor straight up mock the hidden blade or whatever when he/she first got it.

I get why they can’t just drop the Assassin’s Creed name from these games but Valhalla is a pretty decent single player Viking game, the assassin/stealth stuff just isn’t cutting it anymore with these games.

Also the new skill trees are so bad. Not a fan of the whole fog of war thing in there and using up skill points on dumb “stealth +1.2” etc type of stuff. They had it pretty good in Origins and Odyssey so I wonder why they even went and changed it 🤔
