I considered posting this in pet island but they're so insular and weird there so i decided against it. I want to get a baby dog, a puppy so to speak. I was never allowed to get a dog due to a traumatic dog loss experience my mother had before i was born. How do i get dog? I don't want to support a puppy mill and really cost isnt an issue. What dog should i get? I have a bunch of small kids and a decent sized yard behind my suburban home. There are a lot of great trails for walking the dog. I also don't want it to be a horrible little yappy thing and it can't be too big. We were leaning towards a beagle or beagle cavalier king spaniel cross. What do you think gbs? Non serious posts also welcome but serious ones would also be appreciated

Get a beagle then get tired of it barking all the time and kill it with your bare, drunk hands, or don't.

If you get a pure bred puppy you have to get one from an expert geneticist who makes no money or loses money on their dogs, and you have to expect them to ask a full dossier on your entire life and morals, which you will then willingly provide. If you don't, then you support back yard breeders and puppy mills, and are also worse than hitler. (Serious answer, did you try petfinder.com?) Seriously if you want purebred though I don't know what the correct answer is, they are always different and discussions usually result in someone being called out for supporting back yard breeders and/or puppy mills at some point.

Pretty much look at how much space you've got, how secure your garden is, and how much time you have to exercise the dog and look at the requirements for the breed. There's lots of young dogs, 4mo+ at my local rescues on a different continent. That's still very young. GRINDCORE MEGGIDO fucked around with this message at 05:35 on Aug 28, 2017 |

I don't mind the arooo its way better than the yap from a terrier. I had roommates who had a basset hound and i adored ruffles. I would take it out for walks / runs constantly. I love very close to a forest with lots of trails and i have young children who are energetic as hell.

I posted this earlier as an edit so I'll just put it here incase you didn't see. Occasionally rescues will have puppies but they get adopted fast. I'd spam all the rescues within a reasonable distance with your request and details. But checkout the breed first and make sure it suits your living arrangements and such. I like beagles though. They own. They will happily run for miles in the woods if they smell something, they're super scent focused. That's something to be aware of when training. For sure get dog training and budget for it to make sure they are properly socialised. GRINDCORE MEGGIDO fucked around with this message at 05:43 on Aug 28, 2017 |

1. Go to a local shelter and see what's available. Mutts tend to have fewer health problems. 2. Check your kids to see if they're allergic to pet dander, you don't want them to get attached only to have to take them away. 3. In my experience you have three major types of dog hair. There's the kind that requires no maintenance but feels gross and makes dander, the soft hair that requires shaving but doesn't shed, and the soft hair that does shed constantly. 4. Set aside a bunch of money for the initial vet workup. You'll need shots, shot records, deworming, anti-tick/flea meds, anti-worm pills, and anything specific to the dog. Don't let the vet express the anal glands unless it's 110% necessary. Once you start doing it to your dog you can't stop, and vets love to start because it's an easy add-on cost. 5. Get the dog into training school asap. Either take your kids and have them rotate, or give the kids lessons. This will save so much trouble in the long run. 6. Consistency is key to good dog behavior. Your spouse and/or kids WILL gently caress up your hard work because they don't want to put extra work in training your dog to walk off-leash or staying put when company comes inside. 7. Get dog toothpaste and practice using your finger to brush the dog's teeth, so they acclimate to the feeling. Again this will save you so much trouble down the road. 8. Learn what your dog likes. Some like fetch, some like tug of war, and some just want to walk. Don't force them to do what they aren't inclined to. 9. At least 1-2 leashed walks every day. Really poo poo weather excepting, and even then only for a day or two. It's not just the exercise, practicing good leash behavior stimulates your dog mentally and reinforces their bond with you, making overall obedience higher. 10. Pet stores are great places to go during really hot/cold/rainy weather so the dog can "get out." 11. Speaking of, introduce the dog to other dogs in a controlled NEUTRAL setting like a park to see how they do. The dog doesn't need to be every other dog's friend, but you do need to learn to handle your dog in certain situations like the pet store, vet, or just walking around. 12. Look into harnesses depending on how much your dog pulls. Avoid a lot of the snake oil like anti-anxiety pills. Get a good dog shampoo. 13. Prep your car(s). I don't care how prepared you are to be strict, your dog will turn your car interiors to poo poo. If your car interior is important, get heavy covers, invest in a shop vac and cleaners, and say goodbye to fresh-smelling seats. This should start you off. Good luck. Dogs really are worth all this trouble.

I just got a purebred dachshund puppy from a rescue organization in June. I wasn't really looking for a purebred anything, but one of my wife's coworkers fosters dogs for the organization and had introduced her to another puppy from the same litter. My pup came from an illegal backyard breeder who was shut down and forced to surrender their puppies. I know the orgs in my area have had purebred Beagles recently (greater Chicagoland area, more population = more likely you find what you're looking for). Hit up Petfinder to find what's available in your area. Rescue dogs aren't cheap tho, and they do charge extra for a) puppies and b) purebreds. Depending on your area and what you go for, it can be anywhere from $200 - $600. Still cheaper than buying from a good breeder, but a good breeder means they'll be genetically sound and less likely to have been abused/mistreated leading to behavioral problems. My pup is a bit neurotic and may have been abused as he has a small scar on his head. So far no major mental malfunctions with him. He may end up having spine/back problems later in life due to poor breeding, though. City pound would be the cheapest option, but with those dogs, you will not likely find any purebreds, they may have a disease/condition, they are likely traumatized by mistreatment, and you may have no idea what you're getting. For example my mom adopted a 35 lbs dog from the local pound, and they told her he was over a year old and fully grown. He was actually only about 6 months and grew to be a 70 lbs dog - surprise! She kept him though, and he's 14 years old now and seems to be close to the end of his life now, so it worked out in the end.

Dachshunds almost always have back problems because they are genetic nightmare creatures that should not be. "oh its cute a looks like a hot dog" yeah it also costs you $5k when it jumps off a couch the wrong way and slips a disk.
