I mean the max fine is 1 million yen. He probably snitched on the sellers and creators. Which I imagine the police care more about than those buying at this point in the laws lifecycle. The law is only a couple of years old.

AndwhatIseeisme posted:If anyone is curious about what possessing hundreds of child porn pictures nets you in Japan, the answer is apparently a bit shy of 2 grand. No, it won't. Shuesha doesn't want to poke that bear, and I can hardly blame them. That said, the idea that he rolled on people to get a $2,000 fine is, sadly, not all that likely. Possession of Child Pornography was legal in Japan up until 2014, with production legal as recently as 1999. From what I've read on this specific case, it looks like his stash of pornography (on DVD, because sure, why not) was pretty much all pre-2014, so was all technically legal for him to own when he obtained it, which influenced the court's decision. Mind you, the maximum penalty he could have recieved was $10,000 fine and one year in jail. Just in case anyone wondered whether Japan was really hosed up when it comes to their treatment of sex crimes against children. Edit: If you feel like beign disgusted, here is a 'fun' article on the subject. Apparently as recently as 2016 you could still buy suspected child porn in Akihabara because even law enforcement don't really give a poo poo. The Kyoto arc of Kenshin is probably in my top 5 best shonen arcs ever, but I don't know if I'll ever be able to read it again without a little voice in the back of my head reminding me that Misao is totally his fantasy underage waifu insert. That relationship between her and Aoshi is even creepier now, knowing what we do. gently caress, Kenshin is such a good manga that I'll never be able to fully enjoy again.

I always thought that Misao and Aoshi are just playing the age old trope of the impulsive teenage girl with a crash on the too-cool-for-school older guy that's a staple for every other shoujo manga from that period. While sometimes the boy and girl do get together, I think this is the type where Aoshi treats her like a little sister, her crash is tolerated, but unrequited. All fitting in with his cool guy image. Aoshi has a cool design, but his entire purpose in the series is to be a hurdle to jump over. After his first big battle with Kenshin, I thought he basically stopped having any character growth or even a personality, and I feel like I can hear Watsuki grinding his gear to think up a way to make Aoshi come back for the Kyoto chapter because he loved the character so much. Not to excuse Watsuki for anything, but once you are aware of what he's done, it's hard not see the series through colored lenses and start cherry picking evidences and making connections that really didn't exist.

On the other hand... Kenshin wiki article on Misao posted:While Misao is 16, Watsuki wanted her to appear like a 13-year-old. He argued with his editors about the inclusion of Misao’s braid ...The author admitted that he enjoyed drawing Misao and she was one of his favourite characters.

I remember reading somewhere that he invented Misao because he wanted a Yahiko/Kaoru-esque combo with Kenshin while he was traveling to Kyoto.

I didn't know that Misao was supposed to be even younger, I guess we should thank the editor for keeping Watsuki in check here. But Misao was an important character in Kyoto arc, aside from bringing Aoshi back into the plot, she makes good comedic duo with Yahiko and the only female character on Kenshin's side for a while until Kaoru shows up much later. I still believe that Kenshin can be evaluated independently from the action of its creator. I didn't think the manga has a creepy vibe toward the minor characters when I first read it many years ago. Perhaps I will see a creepy undertone thanks to what we now know about Watsuki, but as a whole it's neither fanservice heavy nor written in ways to emphasize the creep factor.

It's weird cause the manga had some critical views towards the path that Japan went down on, as mentioned at the end of the Kyoto arc (about Shishio's vision being enacted by the government itself, in a blatant rejection of Kenshin's hopes for the future), which is something that never really occurred to me when I first read it in middle school but came to understand better. After all, one of the results of that path was Japan invading my country. So I found it surprising to me that a mainstream shounen manga would be willing to go into a topic like that. So there is a part of me that would like to distinguish between the author and the work, but it's still hard as hell to do so.

Captain Invictus posted:I would love to see what the general Japanese fanbase reaction to this poo poo is. Are people saying they'll boycott the magazine he's part of, that sort of thing, or are they just kinda going with it too? Japan didn't criminalize possession of child pornography until 2014. You can still find 'jk' cafes in major public areas where grown men pay to hang out with underage girls. Sad to say, but culturally they don't really give a gently caress. As far as people saying that he 'flipped' I don't really buy it. Japanese had a huge crackdown last year after one of the major distributors got caught with an email list, which is probably part of how he got caught, though I've also read conflicting reports that his material was mostly leftover stuff from pre-2014 which doesn't make it better at all, but does lessen the severity of his punishment. Of course, the same translated article that mentions the 'leftover' stuff also points out that fifteen police officers were arrested last year under similar crimes and only five actually had been fired. So... Japan.
