13th Age Rise of the Ratkin

What is this?

13th Age was created by Rob Heinsoo, and Jonathan Spark, who left Wizards of the Coast during the creation of 5th Edition. They are old time friends, and are responsible for some of the best parts of the 4th edition of Dungeons and Dragons. It was Rob Heinsoo who had created the “Encounter System” that gave 4e it’s tactical genius, you can see the evolution of the action economy in 13th Age, and how much tighter the math got when he had full creative control.

In my mind, 13th Age is the true “5th” edition of Dungeons and Dragons, as it’s an evolution of those original awesome ideas, with a bunch of really cool plot elements to it.

Every player character has One Unique Thing about them that is shared by no other character, PC or NPC, in the world. This idea is one of the many ways players can set expectations at the table: it’s their plot hook, what’s important to them, a sentence that tells the GM “I want you to do something with this.”

The skill system that you may be familiar with has been completely revamped into the Background system. Backgrounds are previous jobs, or physical attributes such as being a Magic Weapon, or having wings, that you can use to get bonuses on your roll. Instead of having 4 points in the Cooking skill, someone with a Chef background could be really good at mixing ingredients, dextrous feats with their hands, and barking orders: the background covers anything related to the concept of being a chef, to the extent that the player can convince the GM via roleplay that the background should apply to what needs to be done. This doesn’t come down to GM fiat however, as the rulebook makes it extremely clear that, as long as they’re roleplaying, they should get those bonuses.

The action economy of the game during combat is incredibly strong, and allows for easily balancing within the system. If you watch the videos, you’ll see how easy and stress-free it is to quickly drum up an encounter and throw it together while the players are talking. I also have hand drawn sketches I’ll be uploading from time to time.

Who are we?

Argosian Tosslekettle (HerpicleOmnicron5)
Gnomish Commander, middle aged historical re-enactor on stilts.

Azure Steelscales (BallisticClipboard)
Draconic Bard, blessed vocalist and skilled pianist.

Jeremy Wainwright (Pinechild)
Halfling Barbarian, nice boy who came out of a kidnapping with serious anger issues.

Kirin Wayfinder (Razorwired)
Halfling Ranger, member of a vast dynasty of adventurers yet

Levi Marshwalker (Diacorn)
Human Cleric, overly optimistic human incarnation of a nature spirit.

Neff V. Pennoyer (MelvinBison)
Human Wizard, farm-boy turned anti-demonic contract lawyer after losing his parents to the Diabolist.

What's the setting?

The port city of Issiden is much like the phoenix, with trade constantly rising out of the ashes of the rebuilt center of commerce. While constantly fought over, besieged, and raided, the thrice-destroyed city now sits once again proudly on its shores. The city itself is an ivory mass jutting almost angrily amongst the black sands, reaching skyward for fame and fortune. The city is riddled with canals of ocean water directed via magic, separating city blocks that float magically upon the water like the seafoam itself. Large hills reach above the cresting waves, and the inner walls have been built to divide the sprawling metropolis. The people of Issiden are varied, though united in their ambitions. No-one comes to Issiden wanting a quiet life and a place to settle down, but rather to make coin and prove their worth. Issiden has a local colosseum, a place where different contests and performances are given. Anyone can sign up or rent in the Colosseum, though slots are hotly debated and fought over. Freedom of choice is important in Issiden, and its laws try to express that. Their justices go out of their way to follow the spirit of the law, if not the letter, causing a lot of legal trials to be more about being popular and well liked, rather than the actual crime at hand.

The local adventurer's league in Issiden is dying, forced to compete with both cut throat mercenaries and the cities own royal guard. It seems like people simply don't need adventurers anymore. The players are the last few adventurers left. They are given food, shelter, and provisions for their various missions by Vamniera “Ms. Lemon” Symirkova, a Dwarf-born Elf, who came to Issiden chasing fame and fortune and is the current head of the league. The Issiden Adventurers' League, or “IAL,” is unaffiliated with any Icon, and tries to remain neutral in the various conflicts that pop up between them. That doesn't mean they won't take a job to clear out demons from the Knights of the Black Crusader, or grab a shady package for the Prince of Shadows’ "associates," but it does mean that they spread the love around. Most factions know that the IAL are neutral, and treat them with a somewhat wary eye.

We use the default setting of 13th Age (13 default Icons, the existence of an Empire, etc.) with some minor deviations that will be explored as the campaign progresses.

On the next episode: The gang meets some dwarves.

Ways to watch:

So much like how LPers of a popular game will go through extra measures to make sure the game gets shown off and is more watchable, I am doing the same with my Let’s Play. There are 4 ways to consume our entertainment:

The Sword will have episodes that are 100% Combat. The combat is largely unedited compared to the rest of the LP, and gives you a truer sense of the 13th Age combat experience. At the end of the Sword, you will get a turn by turn narrative recap that I record after the fact.

The Shield skips the combat and goes straight into the narrative recap. When I watched similar Let’s Plays myself, I had found myself being kind of bored when it came to combat, so I came up with this solution.

We have also provided both video (via Youtube) and podcast versions of each episode’s Sword and Shield variants.

For the people watching, would you prefer Big Chunky updates? (45min - 90min) or the way they have been now? (30min+)

Oh, hey, Herp is in this. I wonder if he'll cause a trainwreck-

quote:

Gnomish Commander, middle aged historical re-enactor on stilts.

quote:

"Should I bring a cannon?"

quote:

Shoots an undead necromancer though a window while safely away from the action, team suffers

quote:

Has McGuffin needed to solve the puzzle, insists on treating every encounter like a combat encounter

Bookmarked.

Episode 008 is here, and that's the end of the Dwarf home session. After this, we're going to be dealing with smaller groups,. as real life priorities got our group split up for a week or three. Still, it's been really fun to play out, and I'm hoping someone out there is enjoying it.
