Here's an idea which I hope will take off, and maybe generate some interesting discussion. You get to have one (1) vehicle for whatever use you have, and you get to have it just the way you want. What would this hypothetical vehicle be like? I'll start:
I basically just need to make Tesla and BMW have a merger, don't I? Your turn!

For 90% of what I do? It's a pretty simple answer: I want a retro-modernized RWD/4x4 Comanche with a lightly extended cab (to accommodate my height). Body on frame with full undercoating and cutting edge design for rust resistance. Go all loving out, build the whole bastard out of unobtanium if you have to, but make it not rot. Manual transmission behind a torquey modern inline 4 or 6. Actual gauges, to include tach, voltage, and temps. Digital HUDs can bite my rusty metal rear end. Sufficient ground clearance to mount substantial MTs or gnarly snow tires. Simple head unit with Bluetooth and no bright face to be a distraction at night. gently caress your touch screen. Both of the above fully and competently airgapped to prevent intrusion. Factory dashcam with onboard blackbox that backs up to remote storage. Quality fogs and lights. Full-size spare mount in bed that sits in front of the wheel well and doesn't interfere with getting 8' dimensional lumber or a kayak in the center of the bed. Locking tool box in the same position on the other side. Wing vents and sliding rear window. Weatherproofed interior stock. I want a truck I can mop out. Sweet-rear end 70's style paint options. I want a brown, red, and orange truck. Hitch with towing capacity to pull a light camper trailer. Liquid Communism fucked around with this message at 14:05 on Sep 12, 2017 |

A Smart Fourtwo, but with a good transmission. It's a car that could exist, but the people they're selling to either don't know or don't care about having a good driving experience. While I'm thinking up dream cars I'd hope that the Elio Motors car isn't a scam. I like small cars, I want all my cars to be tiny but in the US they're virtually impossible to find. I could spend thousands to import a 25 year old kei car, or I could spend even more thousands to get a Honda Insight from like 10 years ago, but for now I get sub 1,000 dollar Miatas because they're the closest thing to a small car I can find for cheap in the US. A convertible top is a plus, I really like looking around with no obstructions, but I'd give that up for the limitations of safety and physics needed to make a small car.

It would honestly just be a Subaru Levorg using some sort of modified FA20 engine with atleast 400HP, STI 6 Speed and Recaro seats. Remap the ECU to eliminate the existing rev hang the WRX has, get rid of electric steering and add some Brembo brakes and I'd gladly pay 40K for it.

A V70R but updated with a 2017 drivetrain (modern B4204T9 inline six, six-speed manual transmission) to give slightly better fuel economy and emissions, modern airbags, modern steering wheel and Apple Carplay.

B6/7 S4 with 3g+ MMI and a V8 w/o the timing chain debacle. Would take wagon or sedan, and definitely 6 speed. Basically any of the recent great cars from the 2000's-now without all the crippling mechanical issues (N62 coolant pipe, valve stem seals; 4.2 timing chain, 996 IMS; etc)

A Mk4 Toyota Supra that has a stiffer chassis and doesn't have a fanbase that's the six figure fly-over state millionaires 90000 hp idiots. Alternatively, an FD RX-7 without miles of vacuum hoses, better gas milage, less boost in, apex seals out, and better parts availability. Other alternative: C5 Z06 Corvette with an interior that isn't made by 90s Chevrolet But ultimately they all pale in comparison to a TVR Cerbera or Sagaris which are pretty much perfect in all manner. Including their failures.

- low, wide, massive fender flares, pop-up headlights, eighties design - modern interior with a touchscreen and nav and sirius - an inline eight engine - a manual transmission - a functional backseat - rear or all wheel drive - easy to work on, cheap parts - preferably german-engineered, swedish would be acceptable too - wagon or shooting brake Yeah, I'm not a regular consumer.

1975 Chevy Silverado 3/4 ton with an LS engine under the hood, all around disc brakes, and an extra leaf in the springs to improve towing capacity. I mean, I could make a list, but it all basically boils down to the above.

Not totally self driving, but enough to take the frustration out of getting caught behind someone who cant maintain a speed.

Yeah, I don't get why so many manufacturers like leather seats. There's like half a dozen better feeling options than leather, I'd put it right at the bottom in terms of seat materials. Cloth, nylon, velor, alcantera, the neoprene hybrid material you get on race seats, even that really thick wool that's impossible to clean feels nicer than leather. People think I don't like leather for some animal rights thing, no, I just think it feels bad, seats, jackets, furniture, all of it feels bad. I also would like an all electric drivetrain, but the cost of a cheap gas engine is so much lower for now, it'll probably flip in a decade or so, but I still need cars for those interim years. I could always wish for an electric drivetrain that costs 500 dollars right now but at that point it gets weird and you might as well wish for a car that costs a 1 dollar and has a 10,000 mile range and never breaks.

Hm, ok. I'm assuming I can keep my race cars in this hypothetical. Wagon format with sufficient ground clearance to survive winter. Nothing too shouty or outright huge, Impreza Wagon is right about OK size-wise. Ideally a pretty rigid body but enh. Wishbones front and rear with shock/spring calibration done competently - controlled body movement but not crashy. Load levelling would be nice but not necessary. Balanced close enough to neutral to be able to steer with the gas pedal and not feel awkward about it. AWD with at least active center differential and ideally active rear and front, initially a bit rear biased but setup to be able to make the use of whatever grip there is. Manual 6 speed with decently close ratios - most of the Japanese manual 6-speeds have this about right. Brakes with booster tuned towards force sensitive with very little travel, good modulation on pads. Powertrain... I'm slightly agnostic. Heavily turboed 6 or high winding V8. Around 550-600hp if the total vehicle weight is kept controlled, powerband emphasized towards sudden kick around 4k RPM and redline around 8ish. Direct injection, decent fuel economy, poo poo like that would be nice but whatever. Like to be able to get out of its own way without needing to be monstrously powerful. Seats that actually fit; fixed buckets are fine if they're the right drat shape, not full on race car spartan but I'm driving a car not sitting in a la-z-boy. Rest of the ergonomics are hard to describe but I'll just fix it until it's fixed. Something like that.

A modern turbo rwd mira. Small, fun, and room to be practicalish Would settle for a modern 180sx. The gt86 doesnt count, you can fit 6 spare wheels in the back of a 180 with the seats down. You can fit more in a 180 than my wrx. E: i want cruise control, aircon, android auto and thats all i need to be happy. I want a shooting brake/3 door hatch. Italian. FR. V8/manual. Wishbone front/multilink rear. Make it rust-prone in non-critical areas so I can get one cheap used. Any interior surface that isn't dead animals or dead trees must be body colored metal. Make it look like Giugiaro drew a mid 70s American compact that got rear ended by a Volvo Amazon wagon but in 2004 and on drugs.
