but besides that, i have a leftover boffins puzzle that i would love to see solved. i gave this to surebet for yosmas last year and i am posting it for everyone else to take a crack at!

i have zero hints for this but surebet may share some of his notes later

Could be a red herring, but the fact that the gray bits make a square make it seem like maybe the number of bytes embedded in the image is less than the theoretical maximum number of bytes that could have been stored in the image and so the data has been padded in some way. It could be a clue as to how the data was striped into the picture. If it was written in vertically then it could be those pixels are black because they're all zeroes.

Again, this could all be a red herring and I could be an idiot.

I'm not going to try and figure out if there's anything relevant to the page itself or whether it's just a convenient GIS result for "Surebet"

Not just that, there's clearly diagonals throughout the left side of the image, it seems like you can probably guess at the block length that way.

Here's some super secret message, don't read if you don't want to get spoiled.

Hello Surebet (and anyone else who has figured out the obfuscation),

As you are aware, this is a crypto challenge for YOSMAS 2016. What I did here was embed text into
the alpha layer of this PNG image. This was achieved by encoding every single ASCII character into
its integer value. This was something I borrowed as an idea from a CTF I had done earlier this
year. I published details about this on my blog about a week before I shipped this out so
hopefully it was enough

I have the full file now but gotta leve the train stay tuned

spankmeister

Ok so how I decoded stage 1:

As Jewel's image quite clearly shows, there is data encoded within the alpha channel of the file.

What I usually do when this is the case is play around with python's handy PIL image library,
because you can very easily get the bytes of different channels etc and process them further in python.

First step is to load it up in PIL and get the alpha channel bytes:

from PIL import Image

img = Image.open("qlZabUZ.png", "r")
alpha = img.tobytes('raw','A')

This puts all of the alpha channel bytes into a string (named alpha).

Now we can play around with it, I usually just look at the bytes in raw form at this point.
Let's look at the first line:

>>> alpha[:640]
'HtwcA0v12WcNfy1gADuauAfXVvvr8FEaen+b\npTXRrUW18G3BVEPu4K2p/kjtayun7jsHa4iAT1DTlJ4MrLN7bjtPL2VlRufXIxn3jfIWK/st43+1\nJc2yjk

\x93\xdb6F\xf9\x04X\x9f\x8f\xf6%D\xec\nu\xf3\x98\xc35=L\xee\x86\xa4K\xbc\x1aK\xde.A\x8e\xe5\xee\x04\x870G\xff\xf6\x0b
\x1dB\xa0\xb9o,\x7f\xf9\xcf\xe6\xb2[\x9f\x8e\xb5[p~\xfe\xdb*\xd3\xad\x99\x9f\xaf\xb4\x1d\x9fi=\xaf;\xd3Z\xe7|\xe2\x90\xda

\xd9t\x8f\x97\xa0\x00\xdc\xd1fj\x8e\x88rD5\xf1\x06u4\xbb\x1c\x92|\xe9\xe3S\xd4\x12\xa5?\x90\xac\xc2V>\xaf\x96h\xe8\x10\xe3E\x86\xc3\xf3'

This looks promising, because the first part looks like base64. Telltale signs are plain ASCII characters with / and + and very commonly = or == at the end.

We can also already see the random data at the end of the line, causing the differently colored block at the right side of the image.

It's funny because this random padding is intended to make the image look more uniform more on that later), but due to the way the random and non-random bytes are distributed, it achieves the opposite and the difference immediately jumps out at you.

Now I initially tried to just cut off the padding bytes (starting at pixel 470 or thereabouts) and put the base64 stuff in a file, but it wasn't right. There were newlines and = signs mixed in at seemingly random places making the base64 invalid.

So I took a look at every 1st byte of every row and got this:

>>> alpha[0::640]
'Hello Surebet (and anyone else who has figured out the obfuscation),\n\nAs you are aware, this is a crypto challenge for
YOSMAS 2016. What I did here was embed text into \nthe alpha layer of this PNG image. This was achieved by encoding every

Then every 2nd byte of every row:

>>> alpha[1::640]
"to figure out what to do.\n\nHowever, like most challenges, there is more to this than just a silly masquerade of a text
file \nbut to congratulate you, I have included some details about how this challenge should proceed \nforward.
Additionally, I padded this with some extra crap I lifted from YOSPOS.\n\nThere are two things inside of this image that
you'll find to be a pleasant surprise!\n\nI won't provide hints on this next part so good luck!\n\nCheers,\nOSI bean
dip\n\nP.S. -- if you "

etc...

Until you reach the base64 content , which is always 76 characters wide + a newline), this is where the diagonal patterns come from in the image.

To dump out the contents to a file we do this:

content = ''.join([ alpha[i::640] for i in range(480) ])
f = open('dump', 'w')
f.write(content)
f.close()

And we are left with the following file: (random padding and most of the image removed)

Cheers,
OSI bean dip

P.S. -- if you want to do this yourself, here's the Python code:

===
from PIL import Image

i = 'surebet.png'
o = 'surebet_out.png'
text = 'blah blah'

img_in = Image.open(i)
img_pad = img_in.size[0] * img_in.size[1]
if len(text) > img_pad:
text = text[:img_pad]
else:
text = text + ' '*(img_pad - len(text))
text = [text[i:i+img_in.size[1]] for i in range(0, len(text), img_in.size[1])]

img_size = img_in.size
img_mode = img_in.mode
img_o = Image.new(img_mode, img_size)

for ih, tblock in zip(xrange(img_in.size[0]), text):
for iv, an in zip(xrange(img_in.size[1]), [ord(x) for x in tblock]):
x, y, z, a = img_in.getpixel((ih, iv))
pixels = (x, y, z, an)
img_o.putpixel((ih, iv), pixels)

img_o.save(o)
===

For shits and giggles, I've gone ahead and encoded the actual image in Base64 for inclusion in
the image itself. It's inception! (Compressed with 7z afterward and then Base64 again)

FInally had some more time this Sunday to finish decoding. I was a little off wrt. the source, but here is the text of the second challenge:

June 2011
=========

Due to the recent events at MTGox.com, we at Britcoin have decided to move our
servers to a new location. MTGox suffered an SQL injection which means access to
the site's funds were in the hands of the malicious hacker. As such, until we
see evidence to the contrary, for security reasons we are assuming that MTGox
has none of it's client's bitcoins. For this reason, we have withdrawn their
access to our servers and the sensitive information on those servers.

While our servers were separate, we were purchasing server space from MagicalTux,
the owner/operator of MTGox. We have already moved all our customer bitcoins to
a wallet which has newly been created and has the highest measure of security
possible. The GBP deposits of course are still safe in our business bank account
as well.

We will put Britcoin up again as soon as possible, but only once we are confident
we have the highest level of security our users deserve.

May 2016
========

To all creditors,

On May 25, 2016, the date of the investigation of claims, I made determination
as to accept or reject the claims filed by the Users of Exchange.

I uploaded the results of the acceptance or rejection to the following Online
Method System. The creditors who filed claims through Online Method System can
browse the statement of acceptance or rejection which sets forth the contents of
filings and the details of acceptances or rejections therefor, with respect to
all the claims filed by the Users of Exchange, by logging into the System and
clicking the link to the PDF file of the "List of Acceptance or Rejection of the
Claims" (however, they will be partially masked). Please look for your
creditor's number (the number assigned to you when you filed your claims) and
your name, and confirm the results of the acceptance or rejection of your filed
claims.

If all or a part of the amounts that you filed were rejected, the reason for
such rejection is that such amount does not exist.

The creditors whose filed claim was rejected may take the claim assessment
process within one month from the date of investigation of claims pursuant to
the Japanese Bankruptcy Law.

For those creditors who filed by Offline Method, I plan to inform the results
of the acceptance or rejection of the claims by sending emails.

Lain, your legacy is complete, you may now transition in peace. Namaste.
