You cheated not only the game, but yourself.
But most of all, you cheated BABA

Heat Signature! It's 15$, there's a gun that's only available for roughly another week that you can unlock in-game, and it's really, really cool! It's accessible to all skill levels, with the pausing mechanic enabling you to think out your moves, and slow-mo kicking in when you're spotted by an enemy, but it can also be ball-breakingly tough when you hit the audacious missions and above.

duckfarts posted:

Heat Signature
  • Remember that you can quit/cancel any mission without any real penalties to you
  • Remember that if you have a mission that's no kills/no alarms/ghost/etc, you can still complete the mission if you fail the goals (you just get less money)
  • If you don't like the missions presented, you can try going to another friendly outpost
  • USE YOUR ITEMS; you'll get more, and you have to use them to really learn how to play the game
  • Those orange boxes are chests with free poo poo and you should make sure to open every one
  • Enemies marked with a small grey square are carrying extra equipment that they'll drop
  • Always hit space before leaving or returning a ship; enemies may have dropped decent equipment other than their default weapons, and they'll be lost unless you specifically mark them to be stashed
  • Subverters will open locked doors
  • If your personal mission is impossible with your loadout, play with other characters to liberate other outposts until you unlock equipment the you need to make it available in the shops (example: I had to unlock armor-piercing stuff for a mission where they all had armor)
  • Pause a lot; you can change weapons and gadgets anytime or do some cool poo poo like warp right before you're going to get hit by an unavoidable bullet
  • When paused, mouse over poo poo on the ship to find out information about it, like exploding barrels and enemy characteristics
  • Every gadget type has an entertaining way to abuse it; try and figure them out and experiment with them
  • Two-fisting any weapon, even/especially wrenches, is great for beginning and even for ending a character run
  • When you hijack a ship, some ships let you fire missiles with right click, and you can go try to gently caress up other ships that way
  • Item effects can stack, and you don't need them in hand for them to work (you can just activate them then carry something else in that hand)
  • You can disable sentries with Use if you walk up to them (I haven't tried this myself yet)
  • You can jump out of your pod in space by pressing T (I haven't tried this myself yet)

quote:

just rescued strix from a rather large ship with seconds to spare. made my way through with some lucky drops and got to strix with not enough time to get back to the pod. went to the outer hull, shot a window ejecting us both and then remoted the pod to pick us up, 2 seconds before death.

quote:

Oh my god. The ship I was on board got attacked halfway through my mission and I realized something.

YOU CAN HIJACK OTHER SHIPS AND JUST BLOW YOUR TARGET SHIP UP WITH THE SHIP GUNS.
If you're flying another ship, RMB will fire the weapons! This will trigger the ship to return to base if it can, so try aim for the cockpits.

(Obviously doesnt work if you're supposed to steal, capture or have no killing clauses)

quote:

I've cleared a couple (and a stronghold!) so I might be able to give a couple tips.

First, if you're out of rechargable weapons and there's not an time limit going, you can go back to base for a reload (and buy a little more gear, if needed). It's not the best route, but it helps a lot when every enemy is shielded, or you missed that some of them are armored.

If there's not a time limit, try to clear a little space to get a read before going all in. Sometimes there's a clean route to the pilot, and if you can take him out, the mission's a lot easier.

Basically, you want a way to deal with shields and armor. As long as you have that, patience will probably see you through.

Or you can swipe all the keys and teleport around like a maniac. That works too.

Even if you can't handle them now, the liberation map unlocks reliable gear for the stores. Means you can always find what you need.

quote:

loving lol heat signature is funny, somehow part of a ship blew up, I got launched out, and then I hit the side of the ship, got launched back inside, got shot twice with shotguns, hit the side of the ship AGAIN and went in through another part of the ship that got exploded and was ok. and somehow one of the guards got sucked out into space and into my pod.

quote:

Lorccan smash: I noticed a marked increase in success after I started pausing all the time
Lorccan smash: you can swap weapons while paused and line up shots, then immediately pause and swap to another
Lorccan smash: and different weapons don't share cooldowns
Lorccan smash: real neat thing I did was use a swapper, pause and line up a shot on a guy with a shield before he could activate it, blasted the dude next to him with a shotgun, pause and get the other guy with my sword, then sidewind over to the guy I swapped and kill him

quote:

Just the other day, I was moaning about how space games never did anything new any more and immediately this game comes along and dickslaps me in the face.

It's a karmic punishment I suffer gladly.

Rescue your friends' characters!
If someone on your friends list gets their character captured, and they aren't able to rescue them, maybe you can! You'll sometimes get a character whose personal goal is to rescue a friend's character. If you manage it, you unlock your friend's character to play as! They don't get it back. They had their chance. It's yours now.
Find your friends' items!
When you retire an accomplished character, you can choose one item to pass on. You get to name it, and both your Steam friends and your own future characters have a chance to find these as loot. Equally, you'll come across items your friends have named.

As the above states, you can find your friends stuff in-game and rescue their characters, which is cool! ... and it prompted a goonrush in the steam thread where everyone shared their friend IDs.

Added dmboogie and ScentOfAnOtaku to the train list - I'll try to keep it updated, but no promises.

I think my favorite heist so far has been with an extreme-range rechargeable key cloner and a self-recharging sidewinder. I didn't need to fight or clonk anyone when I could just teleport past everyone, open the doors I needed, and continue until I found my target. :getin:

In one of my first handful of missions, I hosed up and got spotted while trying to get to my assassination target, so the timer started and I got kicked off the ship. I had my pod pick me up, quickly slammed back onto the ship, then I ran over so that my assassination target (and more importantly, a nearby guard) were within range of my swapper, swapped with the guard, short-bladed my target, swapped back with the guard, and ran back to my pod. Made it out with like 10 seconds to spare. This game is good.

I think the Defector missions are just challenges / a way to give you new ideas on how to use items or weapons. Some of them are just silly fun, like the one where they give you the self-charging subverter grenade launcher and let you go hog wild on the shielded enemies. Does anyone knows if there are self-charging items/weapons in the wild, or are they just locked into the defector challenges?

Sadly, I have some unfortunate news for both Lorccan Smash and Unlucky UFO - I was tasked with rescuing each of them and died comically in both attempts. Third time's the charm, I'm sure I'll get someone rescued eventually!

Helpful Tips for Newbies:
  • Chests: There's generally at least one chest on every ship behind a locked door. The game doesn't give you a good indicator about them, but they're the best way to find good items to sell/keep.
  • 'Brick' Pod: Use this for Assassination targets or Long/No Flee timers. Find your target you want to kill (They are indicated by a green ' > ' indicator) and 90% of the time they will be on the edge of the ship. Just ram the room they're in and they'll get jettisoned into space. You can also connect your pod to any exposed breach. The pod appears to never be permanently damaged despite telling you to get to a station, just repeatedly fix it and ram poo poo.
  • Armored+Explosive targets: Place 'Glitch Traps' and set them to teleport your enemy into space, then lure your armored+explosive target to them and let the cold grip of space take care of them. Concussive grenade-launchers also knock them out without exploding.
  • Concussion Hammer + Timeslip: Once you unlock these two (or find them) you can kill an entire room before a single enemy can react.
  • Press and Hold 'F' to speed things up when you get carried to an airlock.
  • You don't have to reach a capital to unlock it, get the items in the territory you want the capital will unlock after a certain amount of bases go down, you'll still get the mission for the capital.
  • When you retire with a weapon/tool, you can rename it, I expect to see more butts.
  • If you kill/knock everyone out on a ship, you can pilot the helm and send it back to one of your bases. Captures/Assassinations/Rescues/Steals will all get turned in at the end. You can alt-tab while doing this and the game will run itself. (List for the 'thoop' of reaching a station to return.)

Helpful Exploits:

Any personal retirement mission that's about 'Getting enough money to pay debts/retire' will give you about 1k in cash. You don't have to retire immediately once you turn the mission in, so go to the shop and repeatedly purchase Mystery Crates until you find the perfect item to retire with, sell the ones you don't want to maximize your chances.

Click to understand my bad faith posting.
Played this for three hours straight, got mad that I couldn't find any AP ammo for my AP rifle, or any other AP weapons, to deal with the all-armor foundry capture mission that was my first character's personal. He had been wounded 18 times at this point and was an insta-death no matter what, so I just hijacked another foundry warship and suicided it into the first. Rest in rip, whatever your name was.

On the funnier side I did go balls-out on an offworld audacious and beat 45 people into unconsciousness with the Everything Gun.

Anybody know how to fight other warships without getting gangfucked by the seeking missiles? Every time I fight one it seems they get perfect hits because of the seeking aspect whereas I'm just kind of flailing around with the dumbfire projectiles.

So when you're stealing objects as part of a mission, they're actually use-able things with everything hidden. I'm not sure if there's a pattern, but I'm going to try to find out. If anyone else wants to contribute, feel free to pitch in.

Rechargeable emergency shield, 3 charges.

Rechargeable visitor, 1 charge, normal(i think) range.

My hope is one of these is secretly a self-charging variant.
