I was catching up with a friend of mine this past week and she mentioned that she was trying to read Name of the Wind a second time because she "didn't feel like she quite got it" the first time. I told her I didn't like it, and it was like I was a spy giving another spy the password. She went right into a tirade about how much she hated Kvothe and how dumb everything was and how she couldn't understand why everyone had recommended it so heavily to her. It was really funny but also a little hosed up that she felt pressured enough by fan friends to reread a book she wanted nothing to do with.

Then I told her about all the poo poo that happens in Wise Man's Fear and she thought I was making it up

I wish my ex had been this supportive of me not liking it. Alas.

The thing that gets me about Rothfuss fandom is that there's just so little to be a fan of. He's written two novels and a smattering of short stories, all in the same world, and maintains a blog. I think he's done some podcasting? Plus there's the various Kickstarters he's participated in. And all of it is set in the same world.

It's not like there's dozens of books across multiple worlds with a score of memorable villains and protagonists. You either love Kvothe or you don't. You either love paying for a fancy deck of cards or you don't.

Eragon is another example of an author with potential getting ruined by hype. There's some decent stuff in the first book (like the dead baby) and if someone had mentored Paolini early on I think he could have been something special.

But that didn't happen, so...

- "he actually writes women and he makes them prostitutes! he's so much more feminist than Tolkien"

- "all of Tolkien's characters are perfect mary sues! Kvothe actually makes mistakes!

- "only stuffy boring people read Tolkien, he doesn't have enough rape and violence in Lord of the Rings!"

- "'silence in 3 parts' is way better writing than all those stupid poems Tolkien wrote, I didn't even understand any of those poems! poetry is so stupid but everything Rothfuss writes is beautiful"

This is on the same level as Gary Gygax claiming Gandalf was a poo poo wizard because he could only cast a level one light spell.

It's a shallow understanding of literature and it also confirms the ever present whine through out all English classes: "reading is so haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrd"

But Rothfuss isn't hard to read; not like Tolkien ("wahhhhh why is Aragorn literally Jesus Christ I don't understaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand why is it so haaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrd") so it was easy for it to get big with shallow people who want to appear smart. In the microcosm of fantasy lit, liking Rothfuss is an easy way to show off what a smart and well read person you are and everyone else are haaaaters.

All sci fi is questionable since everything goes back to the 60s and 70s when it was still niche and the geeks writing this stuff didn't feel the need to keep their sexual proclivities under wraps :v: Now we're stuck with this industry where the frathouse behavior is still common but now it's getting greater scrutiny. Which makes it all the more baffling that Rothfuss hasn't been targeted by Twitter outrage to be honest.

In some ways that's exactly what he is. He has an entire lecture series on Youtube on how to construct formulaic stories. It's interesting in a nuts and bolts kind of way but generating text based off a kind of equation is precisely what he does.

Even that would be a bitch and a half, as playing an unfamiliar instrument on the fly would be impressive.

Rothfuss wrote about music in much the same way anyone who isn't in an artistic discipline writes about it. It's all about feel, putting your will into the work, etc, etc. It's lazy magic. There's no talk of forethought. Of visualizing. Of the loving work that goes into planning to turn, for example, a block of stone into a sculpture.

In Rothfussian writing, anyone who can't sculpt is simply lacking the artistic spirit. Every person could outshine Rodin if they only wanted to badly enough.

I admit I don't know music. I barely know sculpture but I know it better than music. I wouldn't dream of writing a musician without a lot of research. Rothfuss treats it like lovely magic, in that if you're special enough your capital w Will will overcome any obstacle.

Basically Rothfuss treats music like rolling a d20 and your proficiency in music is determined by what number you roll when you reach the skill check. Kvothe is his Gary Stu self insert so of course he's going to roll natural 20s every time.

and it was like a really expensive ipod, like when the first generation ipods were hot and he was really attached to it and he lost it and now he can't wver listen to music again because he's a spoiled trust fund kid that wanted that specific model and if he loses it then music is ruined FOREVER
