outside of certain sports, being an athlete isn't a paid job unless you're already a super famous medal-winning top athlete who consistently ranks at or near the top and can get advertising and endorsement deals

up until a couple decades ago, it was even worse because the Olympics were nominally supposed to be for "amateur" athletes only and therefore outright banned professional athletes who were paid to do sports

them turning to drugs has a lot more to do with the incredibly vague line between "drug" and "totally legal performance-enhancing substance". the immense pressure to win leads modern athletes to abuse their bodies in every way that might possibly increase their performance, including cramming themselves full of sketchy chemicals and supplements...except for an arbitrary list of banned substances which largely exists to preserve the illusion that there's anything natural, fair, or amateur about modern athletics
