Might have something to do with the Steam Cloud Sync? Just turn it off for TF2 and for sure set your TF2 .cfgs to read-only (\Steam\steamapps\common\Team Fortress 2\tf\cfg)

I cant imagine Source rendering players far away in lower fps than ones in front, so i insanrly doubt its a graphical settings issue. Like theres stuff like physics and real time shadows being rendered at lower framerates but i dont think tf2 has that.

The most likely thing is network connection and even then ive never heard of any network engine doing that. Id say up your cmd_rate? Like check for the usually recommended rate commands that are usually posted everywhere as there are like 4 or 5, but I rrally doubt this could change what youre talking about.

The only scenario that could explain this is if the other players have lag...?

It does sound like some funky network settings / bad server / bad internet connection, etc or maybe some weird LOD settings? See if it happens on LAN with bots maybe? Rule out network connection!

I've always used comanglia's network settings and edit graphic bits but you could try playing around with configs:

Even cranking it down into poor man's DX8 it's still kinda not running nicely

TF2 is pretty CPU intensive and I don't know the magic formula but if you set things to high and use the -dxlevel 98 or 95 -- then you might get higher FPS than ol dx8/low goop etc. due to offloading things to GPU? At least that's how it worked in my experience. Higher FPS with higher quality settings rather than lower.

Also you could try some FUN FPS configs like

https://mastercomfig.com/

or this "outdated" config http://www.teamfortress.tv/25328/comanglia-s-config-fps-guide

5cp/ctf is not really a great experience in 12v12 and I think that's reflected in the queues. (turbine and 2fort are the exception.. people really like those two ctf maps for some weird reason)

Really though it's all about cp_dustbowl + most of the pl maps + ping limit set to auto = getting placed into a server within minute

khwarezm posted:

Saying this as somebody who lucked into an unusual Cosa Nostra Cap with a great effect, do not open crates for unusuals, the odds are always against you if you are looking to cover the costs of the keys you spend to open the crates, you are better off just seeking out the particular hat and effect you want and buying it. Most unusuals go for a surprisingly low amount of keys these days, especially the ones that can technically still be unboxed from reasonably common crates. The super valuable ones are primarily from old crates that cannot be opened anymore which had unique effects that will never reappear, this particularly applies to the early series Halloween crates when you could get stuff like Knifestorm or Hellfire effects, these are older hats which will always have a very limited supply that will never get any higher, barring some possible glitch and duping chicanery if someone figures that out before Valve quashes it.

There are some crates that are still extant that can pop out very valuable hats and effects, especially the invasion update crates, the issue there is that those specific crates themselves are finite in supply and there will never be any new ones added to the game, so the cost of the crates themselves are very high in part because they are increasingly rare and because the prospect of unboxing the fabled Nebula Corona Australis (which goes for more than 3000 keys and is one of the most valuable items in the game) drives up the price of the crates further.

Its hard to know what the best approach is for buying unusuals, but generally if you aren't going for the super valuable stuff your best bet is probably to buy keys for prices lower than you would pay for them on the in-game store in a third party site (marketplace.tf is considered reliable and sells them for 2.05 dollars each) and then looking for some unusuals advertised on the classifieds on Backpack.tf. As I said you can see there are tons of very cheap unsuals you can pick up here, some of them go for less than 10 keys, which is a way better bet than potentially spending 120 keys unboxing crates for the same hat. If you want to be a bit more hands on you can also advertise that you are willing to buy an unusual on the same site for whatever amount of keys you are willing to throw at it. Basic buying and selling rules apply so you might have a better time spending less money but more time haggling with people for what you want if you show interest. You can use steam marketplace for less hassle, but the prices tend to be worse there overall in part because Valve takes a cut of its own that's not present in the reputable third party sites.
this person is objectively wrong

just gamble on any and every crate you stumble upon.. it's fine and fun also you're really cool if you do it

There is absolutely nothing keeping people from running community servers and reliving The Good Ol Days with your gathering of LLJKGOONSLOL

I blame all those servers with their "premium features" mods, abusive server admins, and their artificially inflated their connected player accounts ,etc.. for killing how Quickplay used to work. Just having active moderation from valve (lol) to ban those servers that abused quickplay would have been ideal rather than scrapping it all together. Perhaps the overwatch hype didn't help.

I play casual a lot and I think it is fundamentally fine as it is now. It only has a few problems and it comes from valve not actively moderating the game against bot swarms/edgy gamers/human cheaters that 6stack the queue which makes it impossible to vote kick them because tie votes fail.
