also wages at foxconn (a taiwanese company and a place where the suicide scandals happened almost 10 years ago) have tripled, along with wages for the rest of the country

the reason why chinese industry heads are buying up so much real estate is to get around strict capital flow regulations from the government. some friends have suggested this serves the dual purpose of reserving a safehouse in the event of an escape from the country and that the prc finds this preferable to a blood purge. i'm inclined to agree

everyone's been happy to talk cpc and marxism with me and love that i'm interested in their country from a position of respect and genuine desire to learn

sometimes people are (understandably) wary but articulating marxist-leninist opinions dissolves that fast, because shockingly: they are shared by most chinese

others are apolitical, which is fine and makes sense. everyone in a country of one and a half billion people, or even in a party of 89 million people, isn't going to be a committed ideologue the way members of encircled parties in the imperial center almost have to be. kind of the point of fighting a revolution — so future generations don't have to

you didn't read your source very carefully. the 1600 people you're referring to are green card recipients from 2016 alone. 8000 total, which isn't a lot, but as a proportion of the 600000 expats in china it's not nothing. and i expect that number to grow in the next few years

and when i say indefinitely i mean that as literally as possible, ie i have no idea when i'll come back but it could happen sooner or later. i like it a lot here so staying in china for the long haul might just be the pragmatic choice. at the same time i want to dig into domestic political work again. so there's really no telling

the other thing they don't seem to get, based on how much they harp on wanting to assimilate and wanting to "become chinese" is: that doesn't happen anywhere and believing you, the exceptional individual, can change this is itself a form of chauvinism.

even if the US had been subject to a large scale invasion by mexico, that still wouldn't justify prejudice against mexicans

the real issue here is that many leftists often refuse to either acknowledge the existence of, or treat with any seriousness, xenophobia and racism when expressed by any non-developed countries, because it runs counter to the easy narrative used to justify white guilt or whatever, and for fears that such admissions would be used to itself justify prejudice

take home ex's reply:

imagine if this had been said about some hispanic immigrants to the US, talking about how they've never been accepted or whatever - would the reply of home ex here still be the same 'well actually that's chauvinism'? Nope, he'd do a 180, and use that to condemn the US. but now that we're talking about china, suddenly those standards don't apply, and actually, it's chauvinism to try and gain acceptance.
