Yeah Thor has always had jokey playful moments and serious dramatic moments in all of his movies, Taika just pushed the "jokey/serious' slider wayyy over to the 'jokey' side.

This is true, so it's most certainly a step in the right direction, I just think that his characterization is different in this film from previously.

I think the distinction is that Thor had playful moments, but that Thor was still not a person who was quippy or wisecracking. He was the straight man in a fish out of water type situation more than anything, while this movie had him more of a smart-rear end.

Thor and Chris hemsworth have always been characterized this exact same way. The script has just put Thor in extremely boring situations in the past.

My favorite thing about this movie is that it makes canonical the idea that space is very silly in the MU. Some of the on earth movies are serious and some are silly, but go into space and everyone is farting and being goofballs.

I didn't really feel like he was deliberately wisecracking in Ragnarok so much as just being funny to watch.

I figured Thor has gone a little native on Earth.

Was brought up before that Ragnarok uses a very kiwi style of humour where trying to be the cool guy always makes you look like an idiot. Thor has always been pretty good at that.

Well, my question was sarcastic because I think the idea of Thor 1 having a final boss is nonsensical, so I don't really find it that damning.

He was slightly quippy. He also had a "tries to be menacing but ends up looking like an idiot" thing that is similar to the "trying to be the cool guy always makes you look like an idiot" thing.

The Destroyer wasn't the "final boss". He gets defeated easily about twenty minutes before the end of the film, with the remainder being devoted to Thor confronting Loki.

Thor's problem was lack of humility, patience and maturity. His ability was never in question, which is why Odin stripped him of it to teach him a lesson.

Hey did anyone notice that, when Hella destroys the ceiling fresco in Odin's throne room, the image of Odin the conqueror shows him with two good eyes? Maybe losing one of his eyes is connected to his change of heart. Didn't Odin trade one of his eyes to some snake in exchange for wisdom?

I saw the end of Thor 2 on tv yesterday. I'm a big Marvel fan but geez was Thor 2 a miss. Ragnarok was way better and pivoting Thor to be in space Marvel was a great decision.

I couldn't get over how much the dorky intern looked like porn star Danny D. I briefly thought it was him. That is, by far, the most memorable aspect of the film.

I think Thor 2 is when the MCU ticked over into the 'it's fine' stage, where the film's start to blend together. Each individual one is perfectly fine and acceptable, but feels more and more like the latest episode than a film.

It's not full comedy, though. It's a space adventure with jokes, which is, based on Marvel's history, more of a smart business move than anything else, since their space adventures with jokes have previously made huge piles of money.

It’s a full comedy, like 90% of this movie were jokes. I don’t understand the impulse for people to say “this isn’t a comedy!” That’s a valid comment on The Martian but this?

Okay.

It's a comedy/space adventure.

Which, again, falls into the 'smart financial move' category, since that poo poo is popular.

I have no idea how this is a baller move, but that's partially because I'm old and extremely grumpy.

It says everything about the MCU that every film is the first something but then not remembered for anything.

Thor: Ragnarok is the first full comedy, whereas Ant-Man and two Guardians movies are just regular superhero movies with slightly more levity than Iron Man.

Seriously, like I was flashing back to any random scene of say, Captain America 2 and all I could remember were shots of actors looking very grim in dark sets talking about serious comic book matters and then I'd look at my TV and the thunderman god would be walking around a neon pastel landscape while synth music blared joking and quipping
