I was working late at home to finish a report and checking election coverage, and then did not finish my report and had a very lovely subsequent day, because I had a mild freakout and couldn't focus when I realized Donny T was actually going to be the next President of the United States- this was mostly because (as much as I was emphatically not a Hillary fan and left the top of my ballot blank) I had been absolutely certain she'd manage to pull out at least a narrow victory (followed by 4 years of slow bed making GBS threads, further Democratic losses at the midterm and the emergence of a more competent right-wing populist in 2020), and had not ever really considered the possibility of a Trump victory e: which is weird because I genuinely would also have told anyone who asked that the PEC 99.9% predictions were obviously bullshit and something like 538's model was closer to the truth, but I still thought Clinton was a lock/didn't think through what a 30-40% chance actually meant LGD has issued a correction as of 23:56 on Nov 8, 2017 |

Just kicking it on the couch in my apartment, with my laptop hooked up to my TV to increase my available screen space so I could have more streams and chat windows open. Drinking in the absurdity of it all (and also booze). Took me a while to really realize he'd won, it had seemed so impossible before. Also if you're a Chapo Trap House fan I just found the video they made about their experience putting on an election liveshow and getting blindsided by the outcome, which is sort of a fun contrast to that famous 2008 video about John McCain's election night party: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wE2u0zIzAks

Was hanging out with a tankie friend and went to a socialist councilor's election party. Councilor won his election. Showed up after he won and also that it was obvious Trump was gonna win. The mood was somber but the socialists (most of whom were Hispanic, I'm white) had a steely view about the whole thing. And as I would learn later, the socialists had the better attitude. It was also POURING. DOWN. loving. ENDLESS. RAIN the whole night so it was pretty miserable. Then we went to a house party which was all big-time Hillary supporters (some in Hillary t-shirts); like woke white feminist Hillary supporters from the SNL sketch, and arrived as they were in total meltdown mode. We got burgers on the way so I retreated into the garage and sat in the corner, munching on my burger while someone who I didn't know sat in front of a laptop watching TYT in silence. Later one of the feminists at the party grabbed a Trump pinata and ran into the backyard screaming YOU SON OF A BITCH before smashing the pinata, on the ground, with a baseball bat. At another time, someone asked my tankie friend who he voted for, and he replied "Monica Moorehead." Cue death-dagger stares. Overall pretty hilarious, interesting, and terrible experience all around. If I am going to give Trump credit for anything, it's owning me and my friends on that rainy, bad night. I was chilling out at home with the family and laughing every time another state got called for Trump. I even heard one of my neighbors cry in rage from his house at one point...I don't know if there could ever be another moment so full of meta ownage as that in my life (without some kind of sweet rear end drug cocktail anyway).

A bunch of my friends and I had an election night party/support group at a punk practice space, when we showed up we were all rolling our eyes and sighing and going "yeah I voted for Clinton". This one girl kept freaking out about early results and Virginia and I was like "the lovely part of Virgnia always reports first, it'll be fine" and kept reassuring her. I was wrong, and by the time it sank in that I was wrong, I'd drank most of a handle of vodka, so emotions took over. I got somebody to give me a ride home and woke up the next day half-expecting to read about a coup or something, but there was no Mattering in sight. I wait for it still.

I hadn't followed the election cycle, and had to get up early for a class, so I went to bed early. I figured me being awake or not would have no effect on anything - and as far as rational choices went, well, it wasn't much of one. I also had faith in "the polls" that Hillary was going to win. 7:30 AM my radio comes on and CBC tells me Donald Trump has won. It actually felt...unjust to me. Long ago back in summer 2015, I was in a supermarket check out line. I noticed that there was a Time on the newstand. Cover story was "Can ANYBODY stop HILLARY CLINTON? and the image was of Hillary's head eclipsing the moon I had a random thought: "huh, do you think it's the best idea for the ultimate plutocrat to be the nominee when equity and the advantages of the elite are the most pressing issue?" Didn't think about that for months after - not until Trump was elected, really. But now I see how stories of "premonition" get started

I spent 4 hours that morning making get out the vote calls to Michigan (which was a warning bell in my head since we had almost exclusively been calling Nevada and occasionally Arizona before then). Then I went home and cooked a bunch of food to prevent a repeat of the night of the 2012 election, where I completely hosed up cooking and then had 3/4 handle of vodka on an empty stomach. Also, a lot of poo poo posting Eventually when the results were obvious, I was too sad to get drunk
