Finally jumped on the Apple Watch bandwagon after mulling over buying one for 3 or 4 years now. It seems like the Series 5 is a good time to jump on board - if I could have afforded it, I definitely would have spent a little extra on a titanium/sapphire version.

In the mean time, I picked up like a dozen Chinese bands from Aliexpress for like $25, along with a nice handmade leather band from Etsy.

Does anybody know if there are any good Homekit-related apps for Apple Watch? I'm not the biggest fan of Apple's idea of filling up the Watch's screen with a giant button for each individual HomeKit device. Somebody should release a Homekit complication that lets you easily swipe between pages of Homekit items.

It’s amazing how many apps don’t even offer a one-time payment option at this point. I’ve been looking for a decent calorie tracking app that has Apple Watch integration and they all constantly hound you to pay $30-$40 a year for a subscription.

I’m totally fine paying $10-$20 once for an app that provides the functionality I need (HealthKit, barcode scanning, nutrition photo scanning, nice database of user-submitted data of restaurants, safari extension for recipes), but apparently that warrants a $30 subscription now.

I should just develop a calorie tracking app, because apparently it’s easy to make a bunch of money on annual subscriptions.

Any black stainless steel watch havers here? I’ve had this thing for 2 days and I just noticed it already has some very light scratches along the edge of the screen. I’m talking you kinda have to look for them under certain light at a specific angle light. I understand that, while more durable than gold and silver, stainless steel is stainless steel and these tiny scratches are just something you have to live with. Still kinda disappointed to see on a brand new device. Now I’m curious how one looks after a year or so of use before I decide if I want to stick with it, ask for an exchange (if this is more uncommon), or swap to silver where I have the option to buff/polish it in the future should I want to to freshen it up.

I normally prefer space gray Apple Watches, but the silver stainless is hands down the my favorite looking Apple Watch material. Definitely swap it and you'll be able to worry a lot less about scratches.

I believe downloading any apps with an Apple Watch component triggers a Bluetooth transfer to your Watch, so yes, it’s going to use up a lot of battery (just like installing apps on your phone).

My Series 5 was around 40% at the end of the day today.

The milanese loop in regular stainless is almost comically easy to reproduce for a small fraction of the price, so if you're looking for the silver one, you're good to go with almost anything on Amazon.

If you want a colored one, in my experience you're mostly hosed unless you are ok with replacing them regularly or otherwise ok with the color wearing out. I recommend that anyone looking for a good colored-metal milanese just buy the Apple version, especially as they are now $100 instead of $150. That being said, hopefully you have a stainless steel watch, this may be controversial but mixing an aluminum watch with a milanese just seems weird to me, like mixing formal and casual. It doesn't work in my opinion but YMMV.

As for leather bands, Nomad is popular. If you want a really good leather band, Ashland Leather does shell cordovan leather bands that are sweet, but pretty pricey at $125-135 (shell is expensive). Personally I've had bad luck with any cheaper leather bands, though that may be because I'm used to shell leather.

The sports bands have been largely figured out imo, get any of the high rated ones from Amazon and you're good to go.

I bought the following on Aliexpress:

4 Sport Bands
3 "Nike" Sport Bands
4 Sport Loops
1 Milanese Loop Band

....for a grand total of $29 shipped. I did spend a little more and ordered a $50 leather band from Etsy, but that's worth it for the leather quality.

My Series 5 on 6.1 lasts 20-25% more than my girlfriend's Series 5 at the same point at the end of the day. Similar activity/use cases, too. The only bug I've noticed is I can't use "Sign in with Apple" on a new app I've installed.

I prefer the aesthetics of the sport band but enjoy the comfort of the sport loop. Only issue I've heard about the sport loop is that the velcro isn't strong enough to withstand high pressure from waterfalls.

Sleep tracking isn't backed by any real science, sleep specialists will tell you not to trust the data from any app and to just do common suggestions like "don't look at a screen an hour before bed". It's also been known to trick people into feeling like they haven't gotten good enough sleep just because an app told them they didn't.

I've always thought it was weird that people need an app to tell them if they've gotten a good night's sleep. Maybe I'd think differently if it was linked up to a smart bed that automatically changed the temperature or firmness of the bed throughout the night based on your sleep patterns.

The AOD and Compass is definitely worth the extra $60. I've had a few cases where my Series 5's battery has gotten below 10% before the end of the day, but it wasn't associated with any specific activity during the day. Most of the time, I have 30% battery left by 11 pm.

Nice bonus too that it does a million other things well and the integration with iphone and with everything is so much better than when I had a samsung active 2 with a samsung phone. I'm super impressed with how accurate the watch is at tracking different swimming strokes (this is the most impressive for me) and breaking it down by whatever distance you're doing. Maybe it's easier to program than I think it is, but i didn't think it was going to be this accurate. Shows my whole workout in the splits on whatever internal I was doing it on.

It’s hard to justify official Apple band pricing when you can get near-identical to OEM bands from AliExpress for ~$13 each:

Yeah, agreed. The knockoff bands I’ve gotten have lugs that don’t sit flush with the watch body, the material feels weird, or the fit is off. But $100 for the sport loop is criminal and I refuse to buy one, so I don’t mind the knockoff versions of those as much.

It's worth mentioning that the weave on the aliexpress bands I linked to goes all the way to the watch hardware, which is something cheaper knockoffs bands don't both to mimic. Whether or not the official Apple bands are worth it are up to you, but I have ~20 knockoffs and only 2 official bands.

Can't wait to use a $14 knockoff watchband on a $800 Apple Watch Ultra.
