I don't know if G0M is still active in this respect or not. If he isn't, I'd volunteer to curate the article... but Lowtax hates me and the front page :(

Exactly. There is no reason for the shortage of promoted content except somebody wants to slowly kill off the entire front page idea, and if that's the case I wish they'd just get it over with. At least let such a cool publication go out with dignity.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to. I'd offer to it, but I don't know what "it" entails. It's what brought me to the forums and motivated me to learn Photoshop. The few times one of my edits made it into the article felt really cool.

That's awesome and I cannot name how many similar stories I've heard. LOTS of people came to this site for Photoshop Phriday, and while admittedly the great Fark wars are long past it isn't as though the social web no longer runs on manipulated images (and people still call the whole field "photoshop" despite all the other ways to manipulate photos that exist now). There are admittedly fewer threads in circulation but I think 1/week is still possible.

As to what the job entails exactly I have no idea, but with multiple curators I'm sure it could be made volunteer-friendly. Many hands make light work. Will anyone else volunteer to group-curate new Photoshop Phridays?

Who is going to pay to join a forum when the front page is filled with garbage threads written by "hilarious" fuckwits that sound like they are posting 1993?

There are free sites for that.

That's not how publishing and entertainment business models work. Putting out anything at all is almost always better than putting out nothing because the appearance of continuity is as valuable or even more valuable than consistent quality. I know that sounds wrong but it's really important in entertainment. You know that old saw "the show must go on?". That's not just a pick-me-up for the actors, it's the core of the business.

And nothing screams "fuckwit from the 90's" like an "of the day" or "once a week" feature that hasn't been updated in years. Put on anything before you put on dead air.

There is still really funny stuff happening on the forums, especially in the galaxy of subforums. We just aren't promoting it right.

The front page could be shined up beautifully, if it had even a little support, from somewhere.

I'm with Pick, there's something utterly special about the front page even to people who don't know about us otherwise.

Hey everybody, over in BYOB we have a fun Valentine's day Photoshop thread going that I think could be an excellent candidate for a Phriday article. If you can find the time to contribute it would be much appreciated. Let's not let this go without a fight!

Lowtax tells me it's a priority, he's just going through medical stuff. I'm trying to get him to delegate more but it's tough when we're all-volunteer like this.

Just know somebody IS working on it, the big cheese is just stubborn.

Okay! After several years of campaigning Lowtax has finally assigned me to resurrect Phridays. It's a learning process, but I'm excited and I mean to take it as seriously as such a goofy, goofy job can be taken.

If anybody has recent photoshop threads they want to see featured, please PM me links or post them here. I'm trying my best to scour the forums but there's no way I'll catch everything by myself every week, so your help will be integral to reviving this feature just in time for our 20th anniversary!

If you drag your feet for a few weeks the next Phriday could be 1 year later and be on the same topic. I think that would be fitting (or at least kinda neat).

This is a fantastic idea and we're gonna go for it. In the meantime I'm going to try and feature Banker even though it's not current because holy poo poo was it funny.

Yeah, I'm unhappy with that aspect too but it's a matter of a very specific file format Lowtax wants and it not playing nice with monochrome (plus people made a lot of tiny originals). We've already spoken about it and I'm trying some fixes before the next installment.

Edit- Also here's the tote bags I designed for the 20th anniversary drive we're supposed to be having right now. Lowtax is so distracted by his medical bills he can't be bothered to raise money for his medical bills.

Pardon the double post but a couple people have expressed concern to me privately about the level of frustration I've displayed here regarding the difficulties we're having. And they make a good point- I do not want to burn my bridges here. If anybody (the boss man included) is genuinely offended pm me and we'll hash it out. I'm a reasonable guy who sometimes shoots his mouth off inappropriately, I'm not unaware of that. But I've given a lot of thought and this tact really is justified and necessary. And I'll tell you why.

I've been hunting down Lowtax for three years to put this plan into motion. Only in the last eight months or so have I actually made any concrete progress and even then it had been uphill all the way. Bizarre text conversations, weird phone messages, constant assurances that something will happen and then abandonment, and all along the way there are these festering nuggets of toilet humor that seem somehow designed to simultaneously repel and endear. Like some of the jokes he tells in private make me want to throw up they're so vile, but after a while I figured them and him out. It's just the language old R-Low the Bastard Legend chooses to express himself in, and I can either accept that and play ball or go home defeated. And I'm not defeated yet.

I know it seems backwards or rash for me to light a fire under Lowtax's rear end with sharp ribbing and abuse but I honestly think that's how this dude works. If there's some deficit of disrespect here by all means correct it- I'll absorb whatever barbs I have to, that's perfectly fine. But from what I've learned in a career defined by working with strange, unusual or difficult clients, if I'm not willing to box in the same weight class as the maniac I'm trying to push forward then my chances of actually getting then through their own obstacles is slim.

Lowtax is a ridiculous, abusive, difficult, confusing jerk who makes everything harder than it should be. I don't think we would recognize him any other way. All my instincts tell me to step up and meet him at his own game- outlandish, inappropriate energy that borders on abuse but keeps you interested. If I've miscalculated, which is very possible, then oh no I lose a pro-bono gig that is causing me no small amount of headaches right now. I'll survive that encounter. Considering how what I'm trying to do here is help a sick man pay his hospital bills he literally might not.

So yeah, I know I'm being curt in this thread. It's a calculated move, and again, anybody who thinks I'm off the mark feel free to pm me, I welcome alternate theories and ideas. If the Taxman himself is offended I'll be pretty drat shocked but so be it. These are the rules to his game not mine. But I still intend to win.

There are still a few subs coming in but I think a gbs mod could give last call before the goldmine and close it off in a few days maybe?

That would work. I have a lot on my plate this week already so I'll do banker three, if over the weekend dogs in paintings is goldmined that gives me several days to squeeze in work on it before posting. And everybody got a chance to contribute, we have no reason to hurry that much.

And speaking of no hurry, eventually we also have to visit the world of newspaper Spiderman edits. One occaisional article can cover six months of that thread, which is like two days in the strip continuity, it'll be great.

Oh man that would be fantastic, thank you. Here's where we're at: because of technical problems (I live in the country and can't get a static IP address) I have to get Lowtax to manually enter permissions for me every time I want access to the front page. And he is very very busy so that has proven infuriatingly difficult- I tried and failed every single week of December to post a Phriday. I'm a hard-headed, obstinate gently caress but even I have my limits, and I'm at them.

If anybody who has a static IP (probably everyone but me) wants to post Phridays I will gladly assist with curating, watermarks, comments, basically anything except the actual data transfer which is just stupidly out of my reach. We'll have to get you signed up with Lowtax but it should only be a one-time deal and then it'll just work... in theory.

Adventure Hog is the current focus and I hope to have it done this week, I'm slammed at work.

There are no rules at this point but I made the call to move on from dogs in paintings because I just didn't find it that funny. You may find my curation of Adventure Hog similarly harsh, I've already cut out all the 'shops that are just more cute animals joining the fun or have little tiny blurry boats in the background. Lowtax has been really specific that these are supposed to be funny first, so I guess that's a rule of sorts.

But if you want to go back and curate dogs in paintings go for it! I'll hook you up with Mr. Pig and get you access, it would be mondo helpful.

I'm glad the focus is on funny.

I don't think I'd be a good curator though. The regular goon sense of humor falls flat to me, and I don't get very many of the references I see used.

It really is harder than one might think, I owe G0m and Garbageday some serious respect. I spent like an hour trying to figure out this one image of a log-flume ride from Adventurehog and eventually just had to give up, I could not figure out the joke and neither could the three people I showed it to OR Google search-by-image.

Really, I learned a ton of lessons from doing Banker.bmp and I hope they'll improve this year's crop. For example I'm gonna save my art-historian bullshit for an optional last-page comments thing that always moves the conversation to "join the forums!" and I redid the watermark to use the font and logo Lowtax prefers. I'm pushing for this week, fingers crossed.

Cool! The Disneyland one got in I know. Duckies suffered the last round of cuts, I think? Everything's curated, I'm just waiting on access and trying to come up with comments.

For the record just because I don't get a joke doesn't mean it won't get in. But I'm of the theory that if you're going to make a referencial joke you should try to make the image funny even without the reference. There weren't many bad eggs this time, but I don't mind discarding ones I don't get and are just "rowboat duck in franchise X" AND you didn't spoilertag a hint for us mere mortals, come on, help me out here...

And what do you consider to be 'unfunny' or 'bad eggs'?

I dunno, explaining all the jokes might ruin the fun. If you really care about getting into phridays just try really hard to make images that are funny whether the viewer gets a reference or not.

As for 'unfunny' and 'bad egg', humor is totally subjective and I really can't give you a rubric for it. Just try to make people laugh and don't expect a low-effort image to wow anybody, we've been doing these things for what, over a decade now? I don't think I'm off base holding y'all to high expectations, especially when I'm hitting 60+ images in 8 or 9 pages for these articles.
