I'm a complete layman when it comes to singing, but I was just curious:

How many octaves are there between "baby" and "me" when the boys sing "baby won't you carry me" in this version of Tennessee Jed by The Grateful Dead?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5KEQ-sC6vg&t=412s

Yeah the singers are each going 1 octave higher with falsetto in that clip.

Checked out a few of the covers, good job you've got a nice tone for singing. I find that you tend to slip on 'enunciating' notes out of your comfort zone, sometimes substituting a razz instead of singing and oscillating around the correct note. Get these notes sung as comfortably as the notes you sing confidently and you've got a voice my d00d. One harsh example is your 'flagpole sitta' cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2H4F6oFbyo&t=63s . Here the 'well' is off key, you then razz the next lyric to cover, and then you end the chorus on key and the same note you missed before sounded great. Also, I recommend you get more air in when your singing, more volume in your lungs makes it easier to control the note, especially something on the low end of your register like the beginning of that chorus is for me.

You have a lot of covers uploaded lol, gonna check out more of these and sing along

carsinger

Recorded an acoustic set 2 weeks ago to try and lure in some musicians for a new band in Grand Rapids. Started singing about 3 years ago because I could never find a singer to start a band with. It’s super fun, could always use some help though. Anyone near Grand Rapids wanna jam in 2 months?

Anyhow just these warm-ups have really improved my control and my range a little bit. And have made me appreciate the qualities of my voice warmed up versus coming in completely cold to recording things.

I know this took me until the thread dropped to page 3, but it's really hard to find time to lay down a recording session with kids. Goddamn.

I want to work a bit more on it because there's some spiky audio in a couple places, could use mastering as well but [user died before completing this statement]

Edit: to add: I also have something in the works for your other one, and it's coming along nicely

Hey folks. I'm planning on auditioning for an Alice in Chains cover band, and I have a demo of Rooster that I threw together. It's pretty rough because in a cover band context (drunks in bars) I'm optimizing for feel and tone over pitch, but I'd love feedback from someone who knows the song well!

(The falsettos are probably the part I dislike most right now, and I'm looking to rerecord those in a few days. My voice is pretty raw from 16 hours of singing since Friday morning.)

If I had to plug one teacher it would be this one.

Alternatively a teacher affiliated with the Somatic Voice Network.

Do not be afraid to do trial lessons with a large number of teachers. Trust your instinct about whether you feel like they can help get you towards your goals.

Also make sure you have a good practice space setup. Somewhere you feel very comfortable singing that ideally has a large mirror, keyboard/piano if possible, and definitely a way of efficiently recording yourself so you can rapidly playback what you've just sung, and make immediate adjustments to compare takes.

Don't underestimate the utility of just practicing scales and arpeggios on various vowel combinations. An easy way to do this is download Appcompanist and use their free Etude accompaniments. The sheet music for all the etudes can be found on IMSLP. Don't just focus on singing scales/arpeggios/etudes "correctly" (intonation/rhythmic consistency/accurate vowels) but that they are pleasant/comfortable to sing and genuinely pleasant to listen to.

Claudia Friedlander rocks, she's my favorite of all the people on YouTube. As a rock/metal guy, I take lessons with Adon Fanion and wouldn't hesitate to recommend him.

I have a decent home vocal studio setup, and when I listen back to myself to adjust, I take the headphones off and crank them loud enough that I can hear the track from a few feet away. It's a lot harder to hide unpleasant sounds in that kind of environment than a soundstage you've carefully designed to sound good no matter what you throw through it
