I'm not religious and I'm not "looking for answers". I want to read more for literary purposes and to get a sense of how it's affected the collective unconscious. The problem is there are a bunch of different versions. I've done some basic research and it's a bit crazy. Should I just go with the King James Version? Is there Catholic stuff I'd be missing? Part of me just wants to not read it because of all the bullshit. It's like Old Timey Star Citizen.

The NRSV is probably the most popular scholarly version these days KJV is probably the most influential just in terms of its language, though.

But in seriousness either New King James, or New International. They're easier to parse so you'll get a few pages farther before you get super bored and realize what a pointless chore you've undertaken, and then start a nice re-watch of The X Files.

robert alters translation of large portions of the old testament (pentateuch, wisdom literature, etc), and david bentley harts recent literal translation of the new testament. the king james version is culturally important but much of the translation is no longer considered accurate.

Serious question. what do u mean translated so many times? scholars do have ancient versions written in the original greek (if ur talking the new testament) so its not like theyre translating translations of translations. so in that sense yes they can be accurate (doesnt always mean they are. many translate passages according to later theological dogma rather than their actual literal meaning, or attempt to change the language in ways they find aesthetically appropriate or more 'comprehensible' for modern readers). thats why i recommended harts new, literal translation.

There are manuscripts from 1,900 years ago (and some older) that you can compare. Also, translations are done by a group of scholars (usually) who keep copious notes that you can read to see why they went with a particular English word/phrase to try and translate an ancient word/phrase. You do get people with an agenda that purposely do whatever they want to change it. But if you do a modicum of research into how a particular version was translated you can see if it was an honest attempt or not. OP, I'd say read the Holman Christian Standard if your looking for an easier read than KJV.

More serious answer, most translations are hit and miss. If you want accuracy you need to lift it from the Greek translations and cross check every drat word because there's tons of cases of very similar words that almost mean the same thing with subtle but important differences. I have a couple friends who learned ancient Greek just to be able to really dig into the whole thing and it's all so dense and tedious I don't think they've even edified themselves really.

the correct answer is KJV if you're trying to understand the inspiration for all western literature, NRSV if you want to read the closest translation to what was actually written on the oldest sources we have
