The answer, by the way, is "No". Killing an unarmed person is murder. Even if that person has stolen your property in the past. Even if that person currently possesses your stolen property. Even if you're killing them to get your property back.

This is the bare minimum I'd expect from anyone actually on the left.

I'm really surprised Cori Bush's statement makes direct calls to end support because that's actually more concrete than what Corbyn has here.

Good news for people who are basically 100% ignorant about the Israel v Palestine thing - This looks like a highly aggressive, unprovoked attack on Israel that was deliberately executed during a Jewish holiday. No? Somebody smarter than me explain why this is a bad read, please. Not being a smartass here since I genuinely don't know. Thanks in advance.

It's not unprovoked. Palestinians have been living under conditions that justify violent resistance for decades. It's only that we've gotten used to it, so their reaction seems more violent than the constant grinding oppression which provoked it.

As for the holiday? I dunno, yeah, probably. Only action like this that occurred immediately following a large IDF operation - i.e. during their maximum state or readiness - would seem tit for tat, and yet how successful would that be?

This demand carries the death of the entire resistance movement within its own moralistic framework.

Hey liberals, you know how you love to compare politics to movies and TV?

You know how in Andor the rebels commit an audacious robbery knowing that the Imperial reaction will be swift and brutal? How innocent civilians will bear the brunt of that?

And yet the crime occurs anyway because the Rebel leaders know that the overreaction will fuel their movement?

How exactly do you think liberation movements work anyway?

IDF says schools to remain closed across the country amid fighting
By Emanuel Fabian

The Israel Defense Forces announces that schools across the entire country will remain closed in the coming days amid ongoing fighting between Israel and terror groups in the Gaza Strip, as the Home Front Command extends existing restrictions.

Additionally, businesses south of Netanya and north of the central Negev can only be opened if there is ready access to bomb shelters, the military says.

Gatherings are restricted to 10 people outdoors and 50 people indoors in those areas, the IDF Home Front Command says.

The restrictions are valid till Tuesday at 6 p.m., but will likely be extended further amid the fighting.

Yeah, armed struggle is a nasty, brutal affair. You don't have to make excuses when the gross poo poo happens, but I would expect people on the left to be a but more cognizant of how the media narrative is being used to undermine Palestine.

People who are so easily manipulated will never be part of the solution.

there's nothing to make excuses for. Israel sending settlers into occupied territory is a political, ideological act, designed to make the illegal settlements legal by fait acompli. That these people have to be shot in order to get them to leave, and for their shooting to then be used to delegitimize the liberation of the land is the entire point of putting them there.

I'm not referring to that. I agree with this.

What I'm referring to is how any armed conflict is going to involve brutality. These supposed allies will latch onto these incidents, helpfully focused exclusively in the media, and lose sight of the larger struggle taking place.

Never mind the day to day violence that sparked this struggle. These allies must have a chaste movement and so they drop all support the moment the struggle becomes too real.

It's very reminiscent of Parenti's comments about left anti-communists.

Smotrich urges emergency unity government with Gantz; Ben Gvir sets condition
31min ago

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich calls on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior opposition figure MK Benny Gantz, a former IDF chief of staff and defense minister, to immediately form an emergency government to manage the war.

The statement comes after a televised address by Gantz last night, in which he said he had told the prime minister on Saturday that he would be willing to join the government “with the intention of establishing a war cabinet that will direct the battlefront against Gaza and other fronts.”

“Unity and cohesion are the imperative of the hour in order to defeat our enemies,” Smotrich says in a statement. “Never mind [negotiation] teams, and never mind negotiations.”

Opposition Yisrael Beytenu party chief Avigdor Liberman also said Sunday he would join the current government. But he conditioned his support on Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi publicly announcing that the government intends to “eliminate the Hamas terror organization and all its terrorist leaders” and will not suffice with anything less.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, Netanyahu’s second senior far-right partner, echoes Liberman’s conditions, saying in a statement this morning that he will agree to a unity government only if its “stated goal is the total defeat of Hamas and the shattering of its military and political might.”

Lmao I was expecting the left wing parties to use this as an opportunity to demand concessions on the way thr conflict is being handled, but I'm a dumb loving idiot for thinking that.

Of course the concessions are to the even further right wing.
