There was this awesome NES racing game called Formula One: Built to Win.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_One:_Built_to_Win

It involved a career mode where you started driving a minivan or something and slowly upgraded and built your way up to a F1 racer by winning races all around the US. I really enjoyed the process, and some of the racing was fun I guess. I'm not sure if it was going for realism or an arcadey feel, but I definitely prefer the latter over the former. There was even a casino in a few towns where you could play the slots.

Do any modern racing games exist that are along those lines? They all seem to be hyper-realistic simulators as far as I can see, and while they often feature the desired vehicle upgrading/maintenence features, I don't much care to pretend to be a NASCAR driver or anything. Need For Speed was more my style.

I loving love that game and it's so neat to see someone else giving it some praise. I'm in the same boat with you; I prefer "arcadey" racers to realistic ones.

I don't know how "modern" you want your game to be, but there's a relatively obscure and super-neat game for the PS2 (which pretty much any modern computer can emulate with no trouble) called Road Trip:

Right up front, I'm gonna tell you that this game is god damned odd. It takes place in a world of living, talking cars (although they don't have eyes or faces or anything, they're just cars) and the game begins with, like, the President of All Cars deciding he hates his job and he's quitting.

Anyway, there's a ton of stuff to do in the game — if you enjoyed the lagniappe like the casino in F1:BTW, you'll adore this — but to more speak more directly to your specific itch: the racing is arcadey and fun, there are a lot of neat, weird tracks, and there are about a million upgrades to find and buy. Just like in F1:BTW, you'll be grinding out a lot of races to earn money, but I never found it tedious.

Try it out, give it about half an hour's worth of a fair shake, and I bet you'll get hooked.

Nice! I posted thinking "no way anybody is gonna respond to this." By "modern" I was hoping for some kind of hidden gem on Steam or something, but an emulated PS2 game should be good enough too (I still play the hell out of SSX 3...which, now that I think about it, has a similar game/grind/upgrade loop too). Gonna look this up for sure. Thanks!

Have you checked out the Forza Horizon series? FH3 is on PC and has a free demo.

It's not really a good game, but I remember Test Drive Unlimited 2 having a couple of non-racing activities, like a casino and an interior decoration mode.
