It's really short, and only plays when you level up (if I recall correctly), but it's a loving banger.

They hosed it up in the game because it restarts for every party member that levels up.

I've been digging on remixes and re-records of video game music lately. So much of what's online is mid-2000s butt rock, though. Here's some exceptions.

I pretty much love all the Druaga-associated music and there's something just nice about the rhythm of someone more or less perfectly and without extraneous frill walking through this game (which appears to be quite easy once you know how)

The fanfare that plays between floors is probably one of my favorite things ever in a video game, btw

I am basing this on the limitations imposed on the artists and the quality of their product. You loving kids don't know how good you have it.

Crypt of the Necrodancer is my loving jam and I have five (5) CDs of it in my car, one for each soundtrack edition they've released so far.

I could link basically all the tracks but this is my favorite

Basically the entirety of the Crypt of the Necrodancer soundtrack belongs in this thread.

I can't really decide between the Danny B, A_Rival and FamilyJules versions of the soundtrack, so i usually take all three of 'em at once.

I'm fascinated by dynamic music in games, Divinity: Original Sin 2 has a nice trick. At the start of the game you pick an instrument for each of your characters (oud, cello, tamburi, bansuri). Each battle theme has 5 versions - a normal one, and one based around each of the 4 instruments. When one of your characters gets a kill it plays a quick solo/ditty, and then shifts into the appropriate alternate track.

Normal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBI_cOPTzPU&t=5238s
Oud:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBI_cOPTzPU&t=5238s
Cello: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBI_cOPTzPU&t=5238s

Monkey Island 2 would also have the different instruments drop out and come in at different times whenever you transitioned between scenes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N41TEcjcvM

I'm not sure they're forgetting it so much as it's a bit like saying you like Wily 1 from Mega Man 2 or Guile's Theme. Like, if you like Sonic music at all it's probably a given. Casino Night exists in a similar sphere, although that seems to be a little more love it/hate it (personally I love it, but some people object to the slowness).

Mystic Cave is a bit more original of a take, and it straddles a fine line between comedy spookiness and heavy rock which is why people go for it. Saying that, it's been used in these threads so often now that it's now about as unoriginal a take as Chemical Plant would be.

So I'm going to take all three of those as givens and give some shout-outs to Emerald Hill and Metropolis.

Emerald Hill is perpetually overshadowed by both Green Hill and Chemical Plant (both as a zone and as a theme), but it's got that great power chord intro and my personal favourite VGM bassline that just bounces happily along and makes a good counterpoint to the melody.

Metropolis is rather more straightforward, but that C Major, D Major, F Major, C Major chord progression is just so relentlessly cheerful that it makes for an amusing contrast with how menacing the zone itself is. It's ludicrously catchy and the thing I use to drive other tunes that are stuck in my head out - arguably the cure is worse than the disease, though :v:.

Death to the Black Eyed Peas

My favourite songs from Sonic 2 are nearly all the more obscure tracks. The 2 player theme for Mystic Cave is just gorgeous. It's one of my favourite musical modes, and evokes a part of my childhood every time I hear it used in other songs. It sounds bright, positive and adventurous.

The theme for Hidden Palace, the scrapped level, can still be found in the sound test. It completely nails regality and mystery. It's a shame they didn't use it in the Christian Whitehead remake, although the loop is very short (perhaps also finished), and may have been too repetitive.

Finally there's the music that plays for literally seconds at the beginning of the Death Egg Zone, before you meet Metal Sonic. This was meant to be a proper level rather than just a boss fight, hence it has its own theme. A totally twisted march of doom.

If we're talking Sonic music though, Sonic 3 has some of the most technically impressive and god damned catchy music on the system. Hydrocity and Marble Garden are pure 90s funk goodness, even if the music doesn't quite match up to the level themes as well as other Sonic games.

Tyran Castle from Chrono Trigger - a track that I forgot about until I was reminded of it by a Red Hot Chili Peppers riff. Owns.
