I wanted more to do on Motherbase, although I honestly couldn't tell you what I would want, I guess more immersive / sim like stuff that are just fun or relaxing. And the ability to go into missions with AI or even co-op with other players, but that would have been way out of the scope for MGSV, maybe in a sequel but that will never happen.

Needed more stuff actually happening, people were on guard and walking around, but they never seemed to do anything, there was no barracks to visit where they slept or hung around, so you couldn't catch them goofing off or see the progress of individual staff as they ranked up to better quarters, or took control of a new area.

Being able to get into a small motorboat to get around underneath would have been fun as well, and an opportunity to visit maintenance staff if they existed.

And a helicopter agility course where you get to fly around Motherbase, Pilotwings style.

Hey kids, guess where we're going this summer!

Maybe that'll be enough to stay under XOF's radar.

Also, I ran into a funny mechanic I'd forgotten about today - I was cleaning up some tank units in the side ops, and had the idea to put everyone to sleep before walking up and yoinking them away. But I forgot that tanks don't count as people, and they'll just sit there repeatedly honking their tank horn to wake up the lazy soldiers that mysteriously keep falling asleep right around them :negative:

I finished yet another playthrough of MGS1 today. For the first time I discovered that you can throw Liquid around in the fistfight with the square button. If you get behind him and get him in a chokehold he flips you over his back to the floor. I ended the fight by tossing his rear end off of REX after lowering his health enough which was pretty amusing!

The whole climax, man, that is still an all timer ending sequence, some cheesy dialogue aside. The jeep chase is one of my all time favorite moments in a game. It's not super mechanically dense or anything, but the combination of everything that has happened up until that point, the red lights of the tunnel flying by, and the incredible "Escape" music playing is so peak. I've been critical in the past of the regular overhead perspective forcing the player to overly rely on the radar for the basic gameplay, but I've developed a deeper appreciation for the visual opportunities the game provides the player with, with things like the constant unique camera angles you get when pressing against walls and crouching near certain objects. If the gameplay wasn't basically still happening on a 2D plane, sniping and rockets aside, I don't think it would work, but it's a nice balance here. If the idea of MGS is to provide a blended cinematic and gameplay experience, I think utilizing those elements as much as possible and putting the player in the cinematographer's seat helps the whole formula come together on an even higher level. And then the actual cutscenes are still almost entirely great in terms of direction and voice acting, of course. There's a few of the pacing issues that the sequels increasingly suffered from, but overall it's a pretty brisk and still top-notch experience. It's aging like wine for me.

After playing MGS4 and Peace Walker for the first time earlier this year, I'm finally doing my initial playthrough of MGSV. I really enjoyed Ground Zeroes and spent quite a bit of time on it playing through the side ops and collecting all of the tapes and prisoners before moving on to the Phantom Pain.

I'm only a few hours in, but I'm enjoying it so far. I'm curious to see if the formula holds up as well as it does in Peace Walker, since I know I'm in for a long game, especially since I'll likely be playing through all of the side ops as they come up. I do know that the ending generally considered disappointing and anticlimactic, so hopefully it will help that I'm expecting that going in to it. I haven't read any direct spoilers about the plot, but just from absorbing things from the Internet over the years, I'm pretty sure the big twist is that you're not playing the actual Big Boss. That fits what pretty well with what happens in the opening. If I had to guess, I would say that Ocelot knows about it but Miller doesn't. I'm also assuming the real Big Boss is the one who helped you escape the hospital.

I know this has been relitigated countless times as well, but it's a bit of a bummer that they replaced Hayter. Kiefer Sutherland does fine in the role, but it's kind of jarring every time that he talks. I have to keep reminding myself that I'm supposed to be hearing Snake.

50 thousand people used to live here. Now, it's the Mushroom Kingdom.
Replacing Hayter is probably one of the few truly bad creative decisions Kojima has made and even the voice actors and the voice director who worked on the games agree it was odd.

I thought MGS5's story/ending was pretty satisfying. Like Peace Walker, parts of the story require completing most of/all of the optional missions. I forget if Peace Walker also had audio tapes or an equivalent but the MGS5 audio tapes need to be listened to. I also think some of them are tucked away behind missions, mission ranks, or finding them. I loved Peace Walker and I think MGS5 had a better ending set of missions.

Unfortunately, unlike Peace Walker it does not have any monster hunter missions. If you're playing on PC and you end up wanting to play more post game (or if you play through again some time) check out Infinite Heaven https://www.nexusmods.com/metalgearsolidvtpp/mods/45.

also play metal gear survive after. especially if you've already played death stranding. not a joke

I like MGSVs story quite a bit it’s just you have to replay a bunch of missions you already beat to get it. I don’t think inherently recasting Hayter is a huge deal but since Kiefer was a big name actor at the time he wasn’t gonna spend a bunch of time in the booth which is why he barely speaks in the game. It was a bad decision on many levels and I’m sure Kiefer came at a premium price too.

I like watching interviews with people who voice characters in a one-off production (video game or movie, but not necessarily a tv show). You can tell the difference between those who already love the source material from those who are just there doing a job. And no disrespect to either side, but it's nice to hear Hayter talk about Snake, compared to how Kiefer does.

I first noticed this when I was watching some behind the scenes videos of the Mass Effect 2 cast. Some are all-in and maybe even played the first, and others are just there doing a (fantastic) job.

Ron Perlman, btw, doesn't know a goddamned thing about Fallout and yet it's weird and kind of sacrilegious not to have him narrating something Fallout-related.

Mass Effect 2 especially out of all the games rides on its Sci-Fi celebrity cast, but there is a distinct difference between celebrity voiceovers and the passion you get from voiceover industry veterans:

The funny part is there's a lot of crossover between TV and voice acting. There's a good chance that you've seen a famous voice actor in a bit part on TV, they tend to travel in similar circles.

To bring it back to MGS, you end up with some tremendous performances from guys like Cam Clarke or John Cygan or James Horan who have been everywhere, and it makes the borderline mute performance of Keifer stick out even more.

I never really bought this explanation, because there is a whole entire speech that they did record with Kiefer and lines that I think Venom was supposed to say during the Paz scenes that they left on the cutting room floor, so it seems like he wasn't prohibitively expensive to get in the booth to record anything if they were willing to throw that money already spent down the drain for non-technical reasons. I think it's way more likely that it was really just a stylistic choice on Kojima's part that he decided partway through the game's development that he wanted Venom to be more of an avatar for the player than a character, or maybe to draw some parallel between him and Quiet.

Yeah, I think that makes sense. I like Kiefer on the whole, even if he has some occasional weird deliveries, and I think he fits the game's tone pretty well. I'm biased, though, that was the first Metal Gear game I actually played so he just seems normal for the role. But the other part I kinda feel bad about is that I don't love David Hayter in Peace Walker. I thought he was great in the other games I've played, but something about his delivery there doesn't quite land for me, and it feels like it'd be out of place every time I imagine it in Phantom Pain.

Dwight Shultz is another one where it's always a surprise when a voice turns out to be him. Just finished Wolfenstein: The New Order and had it happen again when the Nazi Big Bad turned out to be him. Which, y'know... appropriate casting, I guess, but it still throws me off to see a character is played by loving Barclay.

(He was also one of the few high points of the infamous English dub of the first Yakuza game.)

EDIT - He was in Portable Ops?! Fucker gets around.

I just figured they didn't wanna do double duty when they could get more VAs now.

That, or it's almost the reverse. Since the budget was so cheap Hayter had to pay for it out of his own pocket, maybe they didn't want to pay twice for one person.

I grew up with him as Leonardo, so it was Leonardo in MGS as Master Miller and Liquid. It was Leonardo as Almeida in Killer7. He's great, but at least to me, his voice is very distinct.

Rob Paulsen less so, but it was weird hearing Mighty Max talking like Raphael.
