Expect My Mom posted:Someone tell me about the Patlabor movies. I own Patlabor 2 because I found it at my local dollar store so like, should i watch Patlabor 1 Patlabor is my favorite anime so I'm gonna field this one. As a general overview Patlabor is a comedy/drama action franchise about cops with giant robots consisting of 2 OVAs, 3 movies and a TV series. It's generally speaking very silly and lighthearted, with the exception of Patlabor the movie 2 and 3. 2 is a very melancholic and deliberate movie about the nature of peace, and it is very good, although you probably won't get full enjoyment out of it unless you're at least somewhat familiar with the characters. If you have the time I'd recommend watching the first OVA series (early days) and then patlabor the movie 1 and 2.

I own Patlabor 2 because I found it at my local dollar store so like, should i watch Patlabor 1 the patlabor ovas are about a team of goofy underequipped mech cops going on mech cop adventures and the movies take place at the very end. the first movie is basically an episode of the ova on a movie budget, the second movie is mamoru oshii making something even more slow, ominous and talky than ghost in the shell. both movies are fantastic but yeah as droyer said you'll wanna watch the ovas first cause a large part of them is understanding the relationships between the cast first. there's a third movie but you shouldn't watch it

Whoa! sounds rad, i'll try and get around to watching the OVA and make it my February movie. Thanks

Confirming you'll get more enjoyment out of the movies if you watch the Early Days OVA first. It's great and only 7 episodes. Patlabor the Movie 1 feels like a serious finale to the OVA. A good mystery plot followed up by some awesome mecha fights and action. Even the slow parts are pretty: https://i.imgur.com/KEoIwXn.gifv Patlabor 2 is a lot slower, full of talking and philosophy and politics, but still excellent. And when there is mecha animation, it's really nice: https://i.imgur.com/96Blx8k.gifv Patlabor 3 is not actually a Patlabor movie. It's a 90's sci-fi/horror monster flick with a small cameo from the Patlabor characters. Only worth your time if you really like cheesy B sci-fi/horror movies, but at least it's decently animated. It's about as "mecha" as the movie Aliens.

Movies I have or have access to that I'll be watching to start with: Doukyuusei -- I bought it but have been sort of saving it since I already read the manga like 4 times and have the story memorized lol that Blood Spray of Goemon thing if I actually got the one w/english subs and didn't waste the download Project Itoh Genocidal Organ even though Dav said it was bad Darkside Blues Sirius no Densetsu -- I'd actually been meaning to watch this but totally forgot so thx for the reminder that it exists Movies I want to watch but don't have yet: Tiger & Bunny second movie (loving amazon only has the dub :ergcryin: ) Children Who Chase Lost Voices A Wind Named Amnesia Those Free movies (maybe) I've watched most of the commonly recommended movies and cruised through both of those big lists hunting things I missed and might be interested in and tbh I've kinda hit everything I want to from those, so outside of this list I'm going to be looking at recent movies and some stuff that hasn't come out yet but will hopefully be available later this year like the Bungo Stray Dogs movie and the Infini-T one. e: I probably need to watch those two Yuasa movies too at some point. my big plans for this year mostly involve watching specific anime series that i have put off watching for too long, but hell i'll sign up for 26 movies i've been told to watch Anthem of the Heart and Silent Voice so i guess those are on the list. other than that i don't have any ideas for what to watch. i think i'll steal all the war movies Davincie posted about in another thread....

Everything Burrito posted:Children Who Chase Lost Voices Children Who Chase Lost Voices is really only worth watching to round out Shinkai's filmography. I might as well join in. I haven't watched a lot of movies, so throw me suggestions. My main goal would be to finish all of Miyazaki, especially the earlier stuff, and Satoshi Kon. I've seen the Evangelion Rebuild movies, Redline, Dead Leaves, all of Hosoda except Kemono No Ko, all of Shinkai, and Madoka Magica Rebellion.

I have watched, Short Peace. A Sunrise anthology movie containing four shorts. I might as well knock them out in the order presented. Possessions: An okay enough start. It's a fairly typical yokai story but it's directed in such a way that makes full use of its CG instead of just being CG for its own sake. Hard to say a lot about this one. Combustible: Easily the weakest. I knew Otomo directed one of the shorts but I didn't look it up beforehand so it came as a complete surprise that this was the one he did. The style is that of old japanese paintings, presented on a scroll and while it's interesting to look at in the beginning, it partially abandons that style fairly quickly so all you're left with is a story that falls flat once you get past the spectacle of a burning village (and to its credit, they make those fires look quite fierce). Gambo: Gambo is light on story and it features a bear fighting an ogre. That's all you need to know. There's a lot of weight to its action and a lot of blood too. It's the shortest but it's as long as it needed to be for its purpose. A Farewell to Weapons: When I first watched this I assumed that Otomo directed this one. I was partially right; it's based on an Otomo manga. The actual director is a mecha designer from Sunrise and this was his first and only anime he directed. Featuring a military(?) operation to take out a mech in the ruins of a post-apocalyptic city, this was definitely the best short of the movie. There's this attention to detail in their tactics that I appreciate. Most notably that the soldiers would have to take great care when firing at the AI mech as it would be able to determine the firing point upon taking a hit and immediately retaliate, so when a soldier has to pull the trigger themselves they fire and get the hell away from their firing spot. Combine all that with a pretty good stinger at the end and it's a fine way to cap off the movie. As far as anthology movies go, imo the sign of a good anthology movie is when there's no universal consensus on which shorts are the best. I don't think that applies to Short Peace as the latter two shorts are quite a step above from the first two. But hey of the four shorts I only disliked one. I don't think it's a must-watch or anything (There are far more anthology movies that are better uses of your time) but it was a pleasant enough watch that I'm glad I took the time to see it. Next on my list, I'm gonna jump on the Book Girl bandwagon. List so far: 1. Short Peace

Oh man, gritty yet smooth as butter not-CGI mechs is my favourite anime aesthetic. I may join in as I've fallen off the anime boat the last little while and only really been reading manga, but when poo poo looks that good then yeah, I wanna watch it.

Patlabor The Movie (1) has a lot more actual mecha and combat, and the animation is still very nice while not quite on this level.

patlabor 2 is a cool movie but you really need to be prepared for a slow, talky two hours in comparison patlabor 1 is shorter and the last thirty minutes are robots blowing things up followed by a one-on-one fight with an advanced super ai robot

I have watched Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike. It's a decent but unremarkable film. A straightforward story about two soldiers who hate each other slowly becoming friends. I know very little about the game it's based on, and I have a feeling someone more familiar with the setting would find it more interesting. Really the only thing I'd heard about Vesperia before is that it had a gay relationship, but this movie doesn't do that. Not a lot to talk about for this one, but hey its at least off backlog. List: Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike
