Dell had switches that used HDMI for stacking, but I don't know if it was the official Ethernet over HDMI or some other thing.

i've never used it but my guess is it's intended that your receiver or driver or whatever has a network connection, and acts as a switch so that you can just run the one HDMI cable to a smart TV or projector

I've wanted to use it once, i.e. my TV has a network connection and would be nice to hop onto it via HDMI from a set-top-box, but of course it has little to no support anywhere.

all of these things work sometimes, if you have the right equipment, from the right vendor, and the moon is in its right phase but they were intended to be universal and work perfectly ootb. fell a little short

arc works perfectly for me 100% of the time. i don't even think about it and forgot it was a thing. cec works like 95% of the time for me and frustrates me when it decides not to.

Much easier to poke tiny holes through the walls for cat5/6 than to get an entire hdmi plug through there!
