i thought nicolae ceausescu thought kim il-sung's personality cult was too extreme even by his standards when in fact he admired it and tried to emulate it also i still can't pronounce ceausescu's name. and for a long time i pronounced "hoxha" like it's literally spelled with an X that is false

I've lived in the Bible belt my whole life and I used to think liberals were cool and also called myself one because didn't really know any. I didn't know much about the divisions on the left until 2016. I always thought "all these people would be down for socialized medicine and poo poo like that once politicians feel safe talking about it here pretty soon." I still get kind of uncomfortable when online lefties go hard on some Hillary conspiracy because, joking or ratfucking or accurate or whatever, it's still verbatim chudspeak.

I thought the general public was not stupid enough to vote for someone like Trump and overt racism/conspiracy theories would be rejected when they got the spotlight. Before that I thought most Republicans just wanted to live their lives without government interference and the weird racists were not a core part of the party. I think this is related when I was a kid I thought when we went to middle school people wouldn’t piss all over the place in the bathroom because they would be older and more mature. Then high school, then college. Now I walk into the office bathroom and try not to step in the piss.
