i feel like even without metatexual stuff, the ending almost directly mirroring the events that start the show indicate this isn't the end for humanity. its a story ending at its lowest point, but i felt there was hope there.

i think it would help ryo a bit if they showed him being more conflicted or confused about what he's doing earlier on. that doesn't really crop up until what, ep7 or 8 when he actually realizes the role that he's been following. akira is fine because the whole point is him being so optimistic and sympathetic to everyone.

with the cyborg 009/devilman crossover, i dunno how it is executed in that particular series but the base premise of cyborg 009 has enough darkness that i don't think they're wildly miscast. all the cyborgs are people kidnapped and experimented on until they become horrible weapons and they have to reckon with that while trying to escape their captor and then prevent him from destroying the world via war. it dovetails with devilman's anti-war message and the sort of existential questions about personhood (the latter doesn't seem huge in either, but the resonance is there). plus devilman as a media franchise will always have that 70's tv series (and now crybaby) bringing some lightness and goofiness to it to temper the tits/gore/apocalypse stuff.

i certainly don't expect another show this year with as wide a spectrum of gay/bi characters that also have the whole weight of the show's themes behind them. honestly not something i expected out of devilman

the ANNCast this week was about Crybaby, and they had one of the site's only good contributors (Mike Toole) on. i enjoyed listening to it even though there's not a ton of ground they cover that hasn't already been posted here/elsewhere

That it is a parody or subversion of the themes of the original Devilman and the sexual themes of the rest of Nagai's work.

what bit of the podcast did you pull this out of? because i did not hear the words parody or subversion and none of them were familiar enough with the manga to speak on it comprehensively/authoritatively (and they didn't).

Why can't these people get a single manga reader for their podcast I'm so heckin mad

none of them want to acknowledge piracy or engage in it, so Devilman has pretty much always been unavailable to them. the 1986 English release wasn't complete, and the only other option is importing a 2002 bilingual edition that i didn't even know existed until researching just now.

Mike Toole has...seen some pages? read a bit? idk, they were very vague on their experiences with the series but as said above the lack of an official release means they probably avoided it or would never dare speak of reading it lol

miki/miko is not a lesbian relationship for the ages or anything but it's hella weird to be dismissive of miko's sexuality. she has tons of resentment towards and weird sexual fantasies vaguely involving miki and all of that is fairly textbook for someone unable to come to terms with their same-sex attraction.

dogsicle
Oct 23, 2012

i mean it's the weakest explicit revelation, if we wanna say the donkey bit and about half her resentment angle (because it's not all just being surpassed/replaced) aren't explicit. the messy and painful aspects of her attraction to miki were personally resonant to me though, and it was the first time i had seen them be expressed this way in a show. it does kinda bug me that this all leads to bland saint miki but whatever

I don't understand how you can talk about how your reading of it is being shut down when that isn't happening at all. People are getting upset that every time they try to imply a lesbian relationship between miko and miki you said they were just long-time friends and now that it's not sexual at all

i said their trans reading made me uncomfortable and that was it. i just didn't get why there was such a commitment to deny miko being a lesbian or even just loving miki sexually/romantically, and instead saying she's a man so she can join the other male characters in this show that nobody has ever questioned the sexuality of. when it comes down to it, both readings take material from her sexual fantasies as shown in the show. so denial of one while raising up another is even more confusing.

dogsicle
Oct 23, 2012

miko can love miki romantically and sexually and be a lesbian, or bi, or trans. i think the intent of focusing on the meaning of daisuki is to back that up, since plenty of people itt are straight up denying miko meant romantic/sexual love.

also, on a less :yikes: note, there's not really any room for debate on the time loop thing; the existence of the 70s Devilman anime in Crybaby's universe pretty much seals it

now, if you want to interpret the ending as the end of the loop because of the two moons, then that's fine, but the loop thing is absolutely addressed in Crybaby, just really obliquely and in a way that looks like a meta gag unless you're already aware of the plot thread

i don't think the old show existing seals anything tbh. if you don't apply any outside logic (e.g. devilman lady, violence jack), it honestly just seems like a weird yuasa joke while the ending is obviously setting up for a renewal of earth that won't be the same as what we just saw

dogsicle

LORD OF BOOTY posted:

if it's just a weird yuasa joke, then it's a huge coincidence that it lines up more or less perfectly with the way the time loop poo poo is established as working.

all of that is established in material completely outside of the show though. yuasa can make his joke have some basis in the wider canon of go nagai without it actually having bearing on the show, since it really isn't elaborated on

i think all the messy, gross sex stuff in crybaby aligns just as fine with the coming-of-age narrative/puberty stuff you can overlay on top of akira's transformation, death of parents, etc. growing up and dealing with sexual feelings can be rough especially upon discovering you're not straight like approximately half the cast.
