As I mentioned in the speedrunning thread: I'll be getting in touch with a mod to see if we can get both threads stickied as usual, and I'm going to try to collect recommendations in the second post of the other thread, so even if you prefer chatting in here and I can understand why you would want to do that even if I'm most likely not going to hang out in this thread feel free to post any recommendations you might have in that one since that's the one I'll be looking through to see what runs people think are must-watches.

Pretty sure Enviro-Bear is on the shortlist already.

I demand that all quality content like this gets posted in the other thread as well. Also what's the font you're using for your Kelly edits?

And if anyone was wondering, there will be no Twitch bits incentives this time around.

I didn't really watch the last SGDQ or all *that* much of AGDQ 2017. Did the rules lighten up at all or is the place still horrifically strict and forced to be straight faced.

E: I have nothing against the event to be clear, I just found that over time it became less fun to watch because rules kept getting added and it felt like every time a runner joked or had fun they'd get slapped on the wrist and told that it wasn't okay.
As I put it in the FAQ in the other thread:

Q: What's this about GDQ banning fun?
A: Just a silly misconception. There's no fun police, and certainly no rules in place that state everything has to be super serious and clinical. A rule that is in place is that people on camera who aren't the runner shouldn't be taking focus or attention away from the run or the runner(s). When you're an event the size of GDQ, allowing people to do whatever they want on camera just isn't possible.

There's absolutely a lot of jokes and stuff going on. Just watch anything by Brossentia for ultimate counter-proof that jokes aren't allowed. Wolfquest is a good example and a run you absolutely should watch if you didn't see it during AGDQ 2017 anyway.

Hoping Enviro-Bear will be as ridiculous. Sadly it's at a time when I will definitely be asleep, so I'll have to catch it in the VODs.

Thanks! I don't see the slow thread so I missed it!
I did PM VideoGames about getting both threads sticked at least when the marathon starts, so they should be harder to miss once that happens.

since livestreamer just works from my config last summer what are the perks with switching to stream link? I like to watch things through Media Player Classic becauseI'm an old piece of poo poo who still uses winamp and saves 320kbps MP3s and violent fetish porn locally still.
It's not as much "switching" as it is "updating", since Streamlink is literally a more developed fork of Livestreamer with a different name.

Hello, speed friends. I am KennyMan666, and you may know me from threads such as the *GDQ effortposting threads. New donation record - nice! I am probably later today going to go through that other thread for run recommendation suggestions, past the ones that are already on the list in the second post, and update that. So if you have any suggestions for that, feel free to head over and post them there.

And in the meantime, may I perhaps bring your attention over to the general speedrunning thread? The current thread is quite outdated, and with it not being terribly unlikely that a GDQ would start bringing in new speedrunning fans, I am currently in the process of writing a new one. There's some sections of that new thread that I want some input for, so feel free to add your thoughts.

I asked this a little earlier in the thread but now it's slowed down (as most people have left :( ) I'll ask it again:

Okay serious question, and I apologise that I’m bringing this up again: if I want to start speedrunning a game, but it’s not very popular so I can’t find many resources on routes or discussion about it, what would be the best way to learn it? Just find whatever speedrun videos I can and try to do what that person is doing?

I honestly don’t know much about speed running or the community beyond GDQ events but I always want to start trying to do a specific game that I’ve mentioned before in the thread.
You should head over to the general speedrunning thread, friend (anyone with a Star Control 2 avatar is my friend) - the speedrunning community is usually very welcoming to new runners, which is one of the reasons it's one of the best communities I've ever been a part of. The coming soon new speedrunning thread is going to have a little section about exactly this, too. If there's no other runs of the game you want to learn, then an idea is to watch runs of the same kind of games, to get a feeling for what kinds of stuff you might want to see if you can find in your game.

It actually is Star Control 2, and I've seee one or two runs on youtube but not a lot of solid information. It would be the PC free version though as I don't have a 3DO. The odd thing about Star Control 2 is that I've never actually finished the game, I've only ever played it in small amounts many, many years ago on a friends 3DO. However that doesn't dishearten me (at this point) because I can learn to play it and then learn to speedrun it, if I really try to push myself to do it this time.
Okay then I don't think my advice about watching the same kind of games apply because Star Control 2 is kind of one of a kind heh

The game does have a Speedrun.com page with three people on it, and Bisqwit did a TAS of it ten years ago. Since it's one of my favourite games of all time I've done some incredibly small attempts at running it myself, but I never did get the hang of reaching the Quasispace portal on the first cycle.

But absolutely beat the game first.

UrQuan Masters (the free PC version) could absolutely make for a good GDQ run.
I love SC2 to death, but I don't really agree with this - for someone who isn't already familiar with the game, no matter how good the commentary is, watching someone speedrun it would be completely incomprehensible. Incredibly fantastic game to play, but not so much to watch.

I have now updated the goon-sourced list of recommendations in the other thread, for those who wonder what to watch. It might get some more runs added to it if people think something big is missing, but it should be nearly final at least.

(maintaining a list of recommended runs in the second post is something I try to do for all of the GDQ effortposting threads, for future reference)
