Badger of Basra posted:y'all are so sure that democrats can win literally everywhere if they run to the left but also so ready to give up three years in advance My feeling is that the Democratic base - like pretty much all Americans - doesn't really have a coherent ideology, but that leftism would probably do well just because its messages and ideas are very straight-forward and clearly indicate the benefits they'll give people. At the end of the day, though, personal charisma is likely the biggest factor, which is why someone like Oprah is a big threat. Despite some people saying otherwise, Bernie Sanders actually does have his own sort of charisma, generally related to him being able to give the impression of being genuine. At the very least, I believe it's nonsense that the American public is specifically against leftism, or that leftism would cause a candidate to lose. Yandat posted:you can sell a left wing vision to the general electorate better than you can sell some mealy mouthed pussy bullshit that appeals to dnc nerds Basically this. Democrats do poorly because there's a disconnect between the sort of ideas and messaging that appeal to the highly educated/credentialed, upper/upper middle class people who represent liberals in the political and media spheres and the sort of ideas/messaging that appeal to most other people. Democratic leadership views politics as a managerial/administrative job, which isn't really a good approach when most people are deeply unhappy with the status quo and want change. I think this one is sarcastic. (Also, isn't that the dude who does that Poppy youtube videos?) Ytlaya has issued a correction as of 20:30 on Jan 9, 2018 |

One of Bernie's strengths is that he talks more like a normal person rather than a talking points robot, that's one thing even bad Dems could learn from.

Positive thought: maybe Trump has shocked and appalled us *so much* that we just have a "HOLY poo poo, MAKE THEM PRESIDENT" anytime we see somebody who's articulate and capable of giving a good speech Morgan Freeman just needs to get really passionate about progressive taxation and he'd be in too, consensual niece loving be damned

Nebakenezzer posted:Morgan Freeman just needs to get really passionate about progressive taxation and he'd be in too, consensual niece loving be damned I'm pretty sure Morgan Freeman wouldn't have to actually express any progressive/liberal ideas; he would just have to say "Trump is bad and maybe I should be president" and liberals would flip their poo poo. Actually, maybe that's a good idea. We can encourage Freeman to go into politics, resulting in an Oprah/Morgan Freeman split among center-left liberals.

Nebakenezzer posted:a good speech Maybe I'm the crazy one, but gently caress No It was poo poo. I only heard a portion and it's all Inneeded to hear. She said nothing important, her emotional affect sounded fake as poo poo, and when she speaks she sounds like a stupid person's idea of what a smart person sounds like. It's the same as Hillary, during the campaigns she never once sounded like anything but an equivocating shitweasel. Are people in America really stupid enough to think this was a "great speech" or is this just the media's narrative?

I was wondering why people on Facebook were suddenly posting pictures of Oprah with Wienstien and #NOPrah. My conservative friends are upset that she's been seen hanging around with an accused sexual predator and see that as reason she shouldn't be allowed to run for office. It's an interesting line in the sand.

Wheeee posted:Maybe I'm the crazy one, but gently caress I guess it’s subjective, but I thought it was great and moving. A powerful speech by a person who has spent her entire life engaging theatrically with audiences. In no way shape or form does it qualify her for the presidency, but it seems kind of goony to say that Oprah’s emotional speech that begins with her as a little girl watching Sydney Poitier become the first black man to win best actor “sounds like a stupid person’s idea of what a smart person sounds like.”

Four years ago, I had this naive perception that 2 terms of a disastrous Bush administration would serve as a cautionary reminder, and that americans would reflexively avoid electing brazenly stupid, inapt people because they all knew the risks involved. Someone like Palin was always a looming shadow given the way the right-wing media worked, but to me she looked like the outlier, just someone that represented a contingent of voters that repubs had to cater to in their coalition. Someone dangerous, but a type of person who's ultimately unelectable and had to be glued to a vanilla Jeb!-like candidate. Masks, disguises and lip service to decorum would be necessary. But then 2016 happened and of course the US elected an orange caricature with alzheimer's, because why wouldn't it. Now I know better! And I have fully embraced our Onion reality.
