The episode is/was a classic in its own right, but Steamed Hams is definitely the high point because--as you said--it stands as an excellent piece of comedy entirely divorced from The Simpsons. The only one that comes close is Lisa's with the gum in her hair.

What about the Pulp Fiction parody where Snake and Wiggum are about to get raped by Herman but get saved by Milhouse?

I just realized this hasn't been posted yet, this thread has been living in sin:

Which episode has a joke flashback where Marge's necklace is made from red cubes instead of beads? That's the one thing I remember most vividly from that scene, and it's killing me that the screenshot clearly shows it didn't happen.

Such a scene does not exist, sir. I think you must have dreamed it.

I've been watching early episodes and it's pretty jarring how different the style is versus the new ones. It really does feel like a parody of 80s sitcom and the tone is so different from the later barrage of celebrity-centric episodes and outlandish situations.

I really want to know which demographics are still watching the Simpsons. It must be insanely expensive to produce, and so there must be an audience, but I don't know who that would be.

I will still watch new episodes on occasion out of a deranged sense of loyalty. 98% of them are mediocre forgettable garbage, they haven't put out an episode worth recommending in at least 4 or 5 years (I was unironically entertained by gimmicks like the Lego and Futurama crossover episodes)
