God dammit, I have to watch this, because I saw some of it happen myself.
I got Phumzile Van Damme (former member of the opposition party) to follow me on twitter. She seemed to respond well to anti-colonial and anti-racist takes, despite her strong lib tendency. Then she founded this "anti-misinformation" think tank.

A bit later in 2022/23, she suddenly started focusing heavily on Russian influence and misinformation in Africa. I would prod her about the the fact that she doesn't seem to do the same for European and American Imperialism in Africa. Shortly thereafter, she went to Washington and got an award from Anthony Blinken and attended an event with Hillary. I made a tweet about how disappointed I was, that her sudden focus on Russia made a lot of sense now, and she blocked me immediately.
I gotta say, it sucks to see the USA scoop up your local influential people and dig their claws in. It feels suddenly very real, and very surreal, and scary. Colour revolutions happen "over there", not in my own country.
But of course, eventually that's no longer true.
drat, that's a depressing story.

As of a couple of years ago America had 5 or 6 bases in Niger. They have left one in Niamey after the most recent coup but that is all I am aware of, so being forced out would be quite a blow.
They are in talks with a couple of west African coastal states for a new drone base for "unarmed surveillance" but they don't have the central location like Niger. On a hunch I looked up Libya news and what do you know... Benghazi still ain't going away
I haven't heard much news from Libya since the 2021 election was indefinitely postponed. It's still divided between the GNA and the LNA, right? With the GNA being "internationally recognized" (emphasis on quotation marks) and including Tripoli, and the LNA being Haftar's faction which includes Benghazi

A little while ago there was news of the US considering withdrawals from Iraq and Syria. I hope this isn't just noise.

A few months back there was chatter about the US withdrawing from Iraq and Syria, is that an ongoing process, was that quietly abandoned, or are they dragging their feet (it's probably this one tbh, now that I say it)?
