DARLING in the FRANXX is studio Trigger's first entry into the mecha genre. Since many of the people at Trigger were responsible for beloved mecha classic Gurren Lagann some weird sex metaphor by A-1 pictures, with some animation and design by Trigger. I am pretty stoked

anime news network plot summary posted:

In the distant future the land is ruined and humanity establishes the mobile fort city Plantation. Pilots produced inside Plantation live in Mistilteinn, also know as the "birdcage." Children live there knowing nothing of the outside world or the freedom of the sky. Their lives consist of battling to carry out missions. Their enemies are mysterious giant lifeforms known as Kyōryū, and the children pilot robots called Franxx to face off against them. For the children, riding the Franxx proves their existence. A boy named Hiro is called Code:016, and he was once known as a prodigy. However, he has fallen behind, and his existence seems unnecessary. Not piloting a Franxx is the same as ceasing to exist. One day, a mysterious girl known as "Zero Two" appears before him. Two horns grow out of her head.

I believe in Trigger!

Editor's note: I know Panty and Stocking & Gurren Lagann aren't really Trigger animes, but I feel like they count for the poll.

I loved the first episode. It just looked and sounded great, and the whole thing oozes that Trigger swagger. Male lead is a little bland but I found 002 very compelling. My favorite little bit was where the evil space pope glitched out when the Klaxosaur attacked - is it just him that is fake, or is the whole crowd of adults fake? It wouldn't surprise me if the scale of the society is much, much smaller than what the Parasites believe; if it's all a show put on for their benefit.

I hate the protagonist so much. It feels like they actively avoided making anything about him interesting. He sucked the life not just out of the show but my body as well. I'm dying and I hope he dies too.

I felt this way about Simon so I am hopeful.

Can those of you with decent Japanese keep explaining the puns / plays on language? I never would have got 002 being 0-Ni if no one explained it. That's pretty good :allears:

I can see why people are so ready to jump on it. When you deliverately echo the style and setup of Evangelion, you had better be ready for real criticism.

I guess my questions are:

1. What do you want?
2. What do you expect?
3. Is there anything wrong with playing the genre tropes straight :rimshot:, if they're done well?"

I think FranXX will be more ambitious than this, but I would be totally fine with 'lonely boy learns to love' if it's carried off with Trigger's characteristic style and panache.

I've only been back into anime for a couple years now, but honestly, I don't see a lot of Mecha shows with a focus on straight relationships around. Is there anything wrong with that?

For me, what I want is something along the lines of Gurren Lagann, something straightforward that that wears its heart on it's sleeve, with lots of rousing emotional moments punctuated by cool music and explosions.

3. yes because the medium is rife with "sad boys destined for greatness hook up with powerful girl that enable them to reach their fate", you can't play it straight without just being pandering at this point and the trope itself inherently diminishes the agency and value of the female character since she is written and designed around the requirements of the main character ("the main character is actually useless! ha ha!" is a mild subversion of the trope and would thus not count as being played straight fwiw)

I'll stick around because Trigger is still really good at animation but I fully expect to roll my eyes hard enough for them to fall out of their sockets if the show starts dumping :biotruths: on us about the nature of heterosexual love

Cool. Thanks for responding to me seriously! I don't know if I agree with #3, but you make a good point. Only thing to do now is find out.

Probably a helpful thread for future show discussion - long story short, Trigger isn’t heavily involved in this show outside of design and animation, and all the writing is from A1’s end. So at the very least, predicting how this will go based on Trigger’s past output is unlikely to be too useful.

I haven't watched that many robot shows, so you'll have to forgive me for my ignorance.
I just haven't seen one that has been this blatant and lacking in merit outside of whatever sexual analogies the creators wanted to make.

Is this really that common?

I haven't watched a ton of Mecha stuff, but some sexual themes are very common. Like Gurren Lagann definitely had a whole Drill/Mech/Penis thing going on, most hillariously expressed when the combining of Gurren and Lagann leads a giant drill to erupt directly in front of Kamina's dick as their robot attains full, uh, potency.

But this is a whole new level of insane directness. I can't believe we're only two episodes in. If this show keeps going at the rate it has .. :psyduck:

I'm a fascinated and a little bit horrified, and I think that's exactly how I'm supposed to feel. I don't think the show is lacking in merit at all. It's trying to say something. It might end up saying something abhorrent or incoherent, but that remains to be seen. At least it's trying something!

The cockpits probably feel more troubling than your average fan service because it's played completely straight in-universe and these kids don't seemingly even know what a kiss is. :psyduck:
I think this is on purpose, and it's supposed to be hosed up and discomforting. These kids are being forced into sex for their society without having any kind of real emotional connection. I think that's really interesting! Some of the other fanservice makes me nervous about the show's ability to execute on this idea; it very much seems like it wants to have it's cake and eat it too.

I am fully prepared to eat my own words if FranXX fucks this up, but for now I want to extend it the credit and see where it goes. I have not been this genuinely curious about where the gently caress a show is going in ages.

Ed: unrelated, but the death of Kamina is the entire emotional crux of Gurren Lagann! It's one of the most necessary deaths I can think of in a television show, animated or otherwise. Simon's character arc would literally not be possible if he could still hide in his big bro's shadow.

I really like the music in this show. There's some really cool echoey drones going on in the high end that I am super into. I did not like this episode as much as the previous 2, but I am still very invested & excited to see what happens next. I think it's interesting how the robot designs for most of the robots are kind of 'cute'; they're childlike or adolescent, wheras Strelzia is much more adult-like with it's wide pose, hips, & shoulders and powerful stance.

Well, there's still strong relationship dynamics too, but yeah. Definitely toned down this time. Just as well. If the show kept up the initial rate of escalation, we'd be past Sex and Violence with Machspeed by episode 4, and enter some incomprehensible new realm of hyperporn by episode ten.

With this, it kind of feels like it was so explicit last time to make sure nobody would miss the themes, and now that everyone's on the same page, it's more comfortable letting subtext be, you know, sub. (Like Hiro!)

Thats anime gay. Yozakura had 2 girls be in a serious(ly cute) relationship that everyone in the series looked at as perfectly normal (as in, no one called attention to it). You would see them holding hands, exchange gifts, go out on dates, be worried for each other and yes, the culminating part of the second episode was them kissing. That relationship always struck me as weird in just how normal it was, that says a lot about anime or media in general I guess.

A little bit off topic, but this was one of the things I liked most about Centaur's worries. There is an open lesbian couple in that show who are basically bit characters. There's a part early on where Manami is taking care of her little sisters and runs into that couple. They kiss in front of her and her sisters and Manami gets a little uncomfortable. It's later revealed that Manamo herself has a girlfriend! However, she's a more traditional person and her attitudes are somewhat complicated - she doesn't want to be seen as 'out', even though her classmates have no problems with the other lesbian couples. It felt realistic - people's behaviors towards their own sexuality can be complicated and even self-defeating!

My overall feelings on Centaur's Worries are very mixed, but I really appreciated the way it didn't fit neatly into any one box.

I really don't think the show would add anything by adding a homosexual couple, at least in and of itself. If it did something interesting with it, maybe. But otherwise it'd just feel like pandering.

I completely disagree. When you have a show who's entire premise is "a creepy, paternalistic cult forcing youth into heterosexual couplings regardless of their personal preferences for the 'greater good' of their society" it feels only natural to ask 'well, what about the people who don't fit neatly into that?"

They don't have to have a homosexual pairing to make the show good or interesting, but it seems like an interesting direction to explore and I, for one, hope they do.

How is having a homosexual couple pandering? 02 is magical girlfriend who comes out of nowhere and changes Hiro's life for the better - that's a classic kind of wish fufillment for straight male Otaku. Is that pandering? (I am a straight man, fwiw, and I like 02.)
