I enjoyed this first episode, hopefully it pans out into a fun little show.

I haven't seen Star Driver, but I have seen Captain Earth and this kind of reminds me of that. Then again Captain Earth had a good first episode too but not very many highs afterwards.

I like when this show does stuff with the framing, like the widescreen shots, half the screen cutting out during the "ntr" or the super focus on ichigos lips.

I think people may be overstating the basic premise here a bit. The shady government nonsense and all that is secondary to the focus on 02 and Darling's relationship. Like its even right there in the title of the show.

I really think the other shoe is gonna drop on Naomi soon, bringing her vanishment up right after the episode where the climax was the revelation that there used to be other kids in the house and every single one of them died seems like it’s pushing it.

Options:
    • Soylent honey is Naomi
    • Dummy plug
    • Some other kind of weird Eva poo poo where the FRANXX are feminine because they’re literally derived from human women
    • Matrix-style recycling, the kids are custom-grown from failed parasite slurry

Did I miss anything?
It could all just be a series of comedic misunderstandings and everything is actually fine!

Yeah, it makes Dr. Franxx seem more villain-like, doesn't it? I mean, it seems like he's softened a bit in present day but that scene with young Zero Two was brutal.
It makes me wonder how far they're going with the Franxx/Frankenstein thing.

Does that mean Hiro is the Monster?

While the scale isn't the same, the Ichigo thing really reminds me of the reaction to the character of Skyler in Breaking Bad. People loving hated her character for acting against Walter White, and surprise surprise the actress who player her, Anna Gunn, also received death threats and the like.

Darling in The FranXX, from the beginning, has presented itself as a Big Important Anime about Big Important Things. It's signposted this in a million ways. Beyond the fact that it constantly apes Evangelion, all of it's visual design screams THIS IS A METAPHOR, from the small things, like the X/Y uniforms, to the giant robot in the room of the FranXX themselves, to, well, 90% of the plot points and dialogue. The show is actively inviting the audience to engage with it at as a metaphor about sex & gender politics.
I don't really think any of that at all is a mark of trying to be important, that's just basic visual storytelling that FranXX is using. It's still ultimately concerned with being a mass appeal character drama and mecha action show above all else at the end of the day, no matter what themes it is also trying to express.

As Blockhouse says, it's pretty hard to not take it seriously when the show seems to have spent most of its run desperately wanting to be taken seriously, tackling concepts like teen pregnancy and nonstandard human relationships in a very serious and non-humorous light.
It's not being played for comedy but I don't think any of these elements are being handled particularly seriously either tbh. This is still a pretty soapy melodrama of a show at the end of the day, just like it has been since the first episode.

Raxivace

Kanos posted:

You can argue over how well they actually handled it, but I don't think you can argue that the framing of stuff like Kokoro's pregnancy was meant to be something dead serious and real to the characters and not something played off like a joke or something that doesn't matter. The show at least made a vague attempt to tackle some pretty serious stuff, so going "nah it was never really serious" is disingenuous.
Referencing a serious real issue (Such as teen pregnancy) does mean that DarliFra was trying to be an especially serious show or was ever interested in exploring the topic in a meaningful way. That doesn't mean it was being played for comedy either (To say nothing about whether something being played for comedy means its inherently unserious or not)- it was played for drama but almost solely as a kind of cheap development to maintain audience interest in the Kokoro/Mitsuru story.

Like for god's sake Kokoro got amnesia before she found out she was pregnant. After being kidnapped from her own wedding by an army of clones. That's not the kind of plot developments you introduce if you want to appear like a particularly serious work of art- its a trashy move you do to be surprising for your audience and generally appeal to their emotions on a kind of base level.

Blockhouse posted:

I would argue that "soapy melodrama" is not what this show was going for
Sure it has. The emphasis in this show has been on character's romantic relationships and ensuing drama from the beginning. Its been handled badly in the second half of the show but that's still whats been emphasized. Even the episode about Dr. FranXX's backstory that gives info on the setting became a kind of needless but warped love triangle.

I haven't seen Active Raid or Robotics;Notes but Gundam Origin is the only one on this list that I think really comes close and even then I don't think its as strong thematically or with its character arcs and also requires knowledge of 0079 in some form to really work as a story.

If it was the Gundam Origin manga instead I think its a much closer race but that started years before TTGL did.
