Well the hopes are to actually NOT get adjutant. Around me there's mainly Combat Engineer positions, tanks and artillery so my assumption is I'll get one of those.

Artillery can be fun. So of course you won't get that. If you do, no smoking in the powder pit and that Lcpl A-Gunner probably knows the circles better than you at first so don't be a dick, pick everyone's brains.

you're probably one of those twink bitches that can run 18min miles and crank out 20 pullups all day. so, maybe you'll get a non-poo poo job vs being a middle manager of paperwork drones on the weekend just based on 300pfts.

if you think about this, joining the marine corps reserve as an officer to be the adj is one of the funniest things you can do. you might waste a year or so of your life training to be guy that makes sure that people fill out travel claims, only you're doing it in funny clothes instead of business casual.

how do you even explain that to people?

Fortunately the reserves let's you either choose a location or the MOS you actually want and it's slotted in your contract. So the risks are you get a sweet MOS but you're drilling 1500 miles from home or you get stuck with a horrible MOS but within an easy driving distance.

Let the gambling begin

I couldn't see a civvy questions thread so apologies if this is the wrong place.

I'm trying to get an understanding of the type/scope/duration of missions a batallion vs a company of Marines would be sent on.

It's for some Clancy-esque fiction I'm writing and it doesn't really matter if the details are correct (hell knows it didn't bother Clancy) but I'd rather get it right. I know it grates when poo poo about your job is wrong but knowing a trusting public could be taking it as fact.

That's a really broad question and I guess it depends on what type of environment the unit is operating in. Are we talking COIN like Iraq or Afghanistan has been or are we talking Cold War-ish traditional force on force battles? I'd say it's a rarity for a company to operate independently from the battalion but we had one of our rifle companies do an entire deployment to Afghanistan separate from the rest of the unit.

In the most traditional sense though the infantry battalion would be issued an order from it's regiment. The battalion commander will get a very broad set of orders like "occupy this area on the map" or "engage platoon sized or larger elements along the route to your objective". Each infantry battalion comes with 3 line companies, a weapons company, and a hq company. The Bn CO has an operations officer and an operations chief that will help him devise plans on how to achieve the objectives in their orders. Once they've formulated a plan the CO is good with, the Bn CO will issue orders to the company commanders. Their orders are less broad but still have room for interpretation and ways for them to achieve their objectives. The company will plan out how accomplish the tasks that they've been given and issue orders to the platoon commanders. The platoon commanders will brief squad leaders and squad leaders brief their fireteams.

A company could be geographically separated from it's headquarters indefinitely if they have a wide area to cover. However, they'd be in almost constant communication with the Bn headquarters.

Well you generally deploy as a battalion but you then spread out to cover more area by breaking down to company or platoon sized outposts.

As far as deploying just as a company, it would probably be as security type mission. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_Marines https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1983_Beirut_barracks_bombings https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana_Wars

start digging through marine actions in those three scenarios for inspiration

Hi, thanks for the replies guys.

To give more detail, the context is China goes Full Dickhead and everyone in the South China Sea joins the US in Operation Kicking Major rear end.

Basically I want to describe assaults on those artificial airstrip-and-little-else artificial mini-base islands that the PRC has built. As I'm unsure of what's actually stationed there (info appreciated if not OPSEC), I'm imagining a token garrison, aircraft technicians and chefs and the like, and pilots/troops to work the SAM batteries. Whole island less than 2 miles across, but a whole string of them as an objective.

Given the small size I was thinking the more people you try to cram on, the more casualties you'll take for little benefit, but then I saw how much a LCVP could carry, and how much more a single LCU could carry, and I realised I had no reference for how many was "a lot" of Marines

By the way special thanks for the links 45 ACP, in particular I had no idea about the Beiruit attacks. And Nostalgia, thanks for the structural breakdown

This part is kind of like the joke answer to "is four a lot?" "Dollars no, murders yes."

One or two guys in a weekend in jail/njp'd/on restriction, not a lot. Injured or killed? That's a bunch.

Three guys out of commission because of drinking shenanigans, fell off a roof, alcohol poisoning, went drinking with the Brits and comes up on a moped ten minutes before you get on the boat to leave Thailand? Normal.

Leaving two guys in Japan on legal hold because of contentious divorces? A lot.

A whole squad or gun section in trouble for drunken fights in the barracks parking lot right next to PMO? Eh, its Thursday, they will get in less trouble for that than for a dirty puke covered room on field day inspection on Friday morning.

I get what you're saying, and it's interesting to see the differences in circumstances, but I'm really talking how many Marines is a lot vs not enough to wreck an airfield's poo poo.

Which again I know is kind of broad again, but since this is fiction I can decide how lightly/heavily defended the Chinese island airfields are for whatever convenient plot reasons I like.

It's how her species communicates

You show up to battalion formations an hour early.

You show up to company formations 45 minutes early.

That's the main difference.
