I believe Pokemon Emerald at SGDQ 17? went to a backup save because RNG manipulation was messed up. Then the runner messed up something else later on.

Straeveras ran Super Metroid - Reverse Boss Order a few marathons ago. It's a very not-marathon-safe run so he had multiple carts full of backup saves at the different points he thought he could die at

Any good recommendations for entertaining speedruns of games that were never really intended to be played quickly, or that have some crazy sequence-breaking flaw that makes them an unlikely favorite of streamers?
I don't know if you're looking for a game where the developers were anti-speedrun but one of my favorite "What the gently caress is happening" sequence breaks is Final Fantasy 4's stairs glitch, though it takes nearly two hours to get to it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J53S2sNwI4k

Run starts at 16:28 and has solid commentary (Brossentia, Netara, puwexil from left to right on the couch) if you want to watch it all the way through. The sequence break stuff starts around 2:02:00 in the video (1:45:00 on the run timer)

RPGs are going to be your best bet. You mentioned puwexil; not sure if RPG Limit Break's channels are on your radar:

It's a charity marathon that puwexil helps to run. It focuses on RPG speedruns but they also run various tournaments and marathons throughout the year. On that note, you could also search through GDQ's youtube channel for RPGs/other long games and then also follow the runner's twitch channel.

It's an MMO with a player economy. The player economy is starting from zero, and you only get one chance to do a speedrun in that context.

If you come along a month later, when other players are running around farming endgame gear, throwing around a ton of gold on the auction house, etc., that's a very different context and a very different speedrun.
They can have AH and no-AH categories

On the topic of Classic and speedruns, I had followed FuriousPaul on twitch at some point because he was doing Super Castlevania? speedruns. Particularly FPS games.
Im not really looking for a lets-play with a streamer with a face cam interacting with his viewers a lot but more what it would look like if John Wick played through Half Life 2.
Jabor beat me to it but here's a link to the speedrun.com HL2 leaderboard for glitchless https://www.speedrun.com/hl2ce#Glitchless

There's also a Single Segment category in the Misc. drop-down but only one run listed.

One other category name to look for would be something like No Major Glitches (NMG). Using Super Metroid as an example, there's any% NMG which has a record of 40m 56s and any% glitched at 11m 38s.

For RPGs: Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 4, and Final Fantasy 6 GDQ runs usually have Puwexil as a runner or commentator and he's really good at explaining various strategies being used. There's also the often-referenced FF7 run that is worth looking at:
