i think people talk about the manga in the general shoujo thread but increased popularity might mean people would prefer a dedicated thread for it. I don't really see any reason to not let people post about the manga either so go wild, but I'm also less familiar with the Manga stuff so the OP that no one reads might be a bit underserving

I kind of like the idea of Yuzu getting a female suitor this time, maybe going so far as getting a new Gf in the interim.

In my shojo binge, I finally watched Your Name, drat that was really good, and I got recommended Silence Voice to watch after. But I just watched Pop Team Epic instead, because there's way too much drama in 1 day.

I'd actually find that pretty cool, but I can't really imagine Yuzu getting together with anyone we've met. Maybe she'd have to do some online dating first or something.

Yeah, I've been going through some Shojo stuff after RME mentioned the Romance thread, too. It's a genre I've never even considered getting into, but I kind of want to read more stuff like Citrus.

Kimi ni Todoke had some very cool gyarus in it, but the main couple is insufferable.
Lovely Complex has a very rude boy in it, and I don't appreciate that his rudeness is treated like something the girl just has to get over. Generally fairly charming, though. I might read more.
Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun is interesting since the protagonist clearly has some unspecified developmental disorder. I don't really like the attempts at humour, though. Citrus is somehow way more realistic despite being completely ridiculous. It never undercuts its own emotional punch the way this manga does.

I also tried reading some Inio Asano again, but that just sends me into a spiral of depression.

A funny break before Silent Voice is highly recommended. I binge read through Silent Voice in 3 evenings. It made me contemplate the meaning of life and the world. I loved it and I'm curious what you'll think of it.

Yeah. I never read the manga, but I actually enjoyed A Silent Voice as a film even more than Your Name. I drags a bit in the middle since it's kind of long, but the animation is top notch and it's a very powerful perspective.

The manga is pretty good as well. I think the movie does an admirable job of removing all the fluff while still getting across the overarching ideas. Some of the characters end up getting the short end of the stick due to these cuts, though. Particularly Mashiba was way more compelling in the manga.

For me at least, it definitely makes a difference that Yuzu and Mei look older. It's like watching Riverdale. The art style in Akuma No Riddle is a lot more cutesy, and that changes what I'm comfortable with.

DisDisDis posted:

As far as I'm concerned, the incest aspect is a contrivance to get those two girls in the same room. I'd probably not be fine with some genuine Game of Thrones-style incest, if it was treated the same way. It's fine, though. We can't all like the same things.

edit: Oh yeah, I'd also not be comfortable with outright Citrus porn. I like that they're clearly sexually attracted, but I don't need to see more than that. It's not important for the story.

Fun fact about Akuma No Riddle, there's actual NSFW doujins of it made by the series' artist.

The series is also officially released by Seven Seas in the west

Personally I thought it had an interesting premise that failed to live up its potential.

Yeah, I do wish Dynasty would have some sort of 'don't show any nsfw' filter when reading stuff on there, or at the least just link to a separate page with any fanart or related series instead of just showing it on the page.

I liked it, but agree it didn't quite live up to itself. Possibly could have done with a few more chapters with longer fights as they felt a bit rushed (especially the one with the explosive collar and needing to find the code numbers), and the sudden inclusion of cyborgs and magic near the end kind of came out of left field. Also the concept of the guardian's 'master' sending her riddles via the phone was interesting but quickly got ignored, which is weird because that's what the series is named around (I think?).

When I read the synopsis, I thought it was gonna be some paranoid fever dream. The thought that everyone you know wants to kill you is kind of hosed up. In execution, it's actually pretty unexciting. It's probably the fact that they establish clear rules when you're allowed to murder her. Makes it a bit less scary. I think, I wanted it to be weirder and more psychological than it actually turned out to be, too, like a queer(er?) version of The Woman Called Fujiko Mine.

That's kind of surprising. Didn't the anime air before the manga was finished?

Maybe someone can explain this to me: I've been reading Lovely Complex, and I don't get how "I love you" works in Japanese. It seems like it's way too easy to misinterpret, since it's almost always misunderstood in that manga. The same thing kept happening in Citrus, but it was way easier to ignore there (because Yuzu knows no subtlety). Why is it so ambiguous? Why do the translators sometimes choose "I like you", sometimes "I really like you" and sometimes "I love you"?

My biggest issue is that Haru and Tokaku are pretty bland characters that fail to carry the entire story, the rest of the girls are much more interesting characters but as soon as they got development, they get removed from the story. And then you have the developments at the end that are pretty nonsensical and have a palpable rushed feeling.

I'm no expert on Japanese but I know there's two different ways to express affection for someone in Japanese. One Dai suki is akin to say I like you and the other Aishiteru is to express intense love for someone but the exact meaning of the phrases depends on the context on which they're used.

Yeah, they're not great. Especially the protagonist is kind of similar to how Mei is portrayed at the start of Citrus, and it makes her a bit unrelatable. I think that's one of Citrus' strong points. Even if you think you've got the character figured out, there's always a little more going on than you can see at first glance.

So, saying "Aishiteru" would be nearly impossible to misunderstand, if said on its own, but "Dai suki" is really vague?
