Does it really need saying?

Welcome to... one of the strangest things I've ever encountered in my life. At the turn of the century, Capcom apparently gave a handful of Taiwanese developers the rights to make Mega Man games. Not a ton is known about the deals that were made, but the end result of this strange series of decisions was a pair of video games: 1999's Rockman Gole Empire and 2001's Rockman Strategy. We ran an LP of Gold Empire that lasted three episodes and we moved right along, seeing as we could only barely understand what was going on in the first place, but Strategy... is another beast entirely.

What is Rockman Strategy?

Rockman Strategy is a 2001 video game developed by a company called Dream Come True (not to be confused with Masato Nakamura's rock band) and published by Third Wave Publishing, a subsidiary of Acer (why). It's an isometric, turn-based tactical RPG. Outside the concept of elevation, it plays surprisingly close to Final Fantasy Tactics on the map. It's about the only real comparison that can be made at all to... any other video game at all.

And then there's the actual fighting. See, unlike Final Fantasy Tactics, you don't just walk up to an enemy and stab them. Instead, in a strange combination of Shining Force and The Adventure of Link, you enter into a 30-second shootout with your opponent, where you have to spam Buster shots or special moves in an attempt to knock each other out. Oh, and there's lots of egregious, horrible Day-One-of-Super-Mario-RPG-concept-phases 3D clay monster versions of everyone.

Why are you playing this poo poo at all?

Well, for a little over three years now, we've been running a series on our channel called The Mega Let's Play. We're playing every single Mega Man game (we've made other threads on here for the Zero series, as well as the "Axl Trilogy" of the Mega Man X series). Including... this garbage. And despite everything, this game is starting to make sense. And to add to this bizarre situation, in all my searching online, I have yet to find a single Let's Play of this game at all. Which means (somehow) after running this Alcohol 120%-based two-disc ISO in a simulated Windows XP environment in VirtualBox on a Mac... we might be the first to ever truly tackle this thing.

This is gonna get rough.

Okay, so... there's a good chance the amount of "catch up" here may rub people the wrong way, and if that's the case and if it's super not cool, I'm happy to wring out only the episodes that have happened thus far that would be needed to move forward. Basically... it didn't occur to me to bring this to you guys at first because of what we ended up labeling as "Part 0":

Part 0: "....This"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbQUlFusOaw

At first, this was a busted game that we wouldn't be able to play at all, and then once things got rolling, we started having trouble just even playing the thing correctly, seeing as the "English patch" that was touted alongside the game translated essentially just the dialogue and nothing else. I might have to work on that on my own, but basically, the intro stage was a rough ride that took a while.

Part 1: "I'll Accept That as Fact"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEnr6wPXO8k

And so, we were off. Sort of. Turns out there are a few tricks that make the game a lot easier to play... which we were not privy to at all at the start of the ride. That gets better.

So in short, this game is gonna be running for a while, and it's (apparently) unique on YouTube, Something Awful, and... just the internet at large. And I wanna pick your brains about it, 'cause I don't know what the gently caress I'm doing, and it's gonna take everything I've got to convince the rest of the team to stick with me through this horror show.

Discendo Vox

We don't need to have that dialogue because it's obvious, trivial, and has already been had a thousand times.

It is goddamn incredible how awful every ounce of the artwork in this game is, and it isn't even a consistent flavor of bad, there's like five different art styles at play here.

So after getting through the Intro Stage, we (very mistakenly) figured the game would be just a simple difficulty slope, easing the player into the first set of four battles, then gradually getting harder from there.

This would be the case if we could read any of our menus.

So our first attempt at taking down Aries... did not end well. We got pretty far, but ultimately got our asses kicked. So we're giving it another go, hoping a little more strategic use of our troops will give us victory in the first real stage of the game.

Okay, so clearly something is just not working. We're getting our asses handed to us, which means we need to switch up our strategy. RULE #1: If things start looking horrible, we need to get the gently caress out of Dodge and head back to the base to level up, using Mega Man's "Jump" skill. And so I don't waste my team's time (and they don't fillet me alive), I'm going to take a swing at this match on my own. Let's see if it helps...

So in the last battle, I decided to go it alone (to spare my team the seemingly inevitable failure of the experiment in motion) and try pushing hard into the battle until being forced to retreat, allowing me to keep any Screws won in battle and power up my team. It's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off.

SUCCESS! Okay, so the big lessons learned here: If the battle's getting bad, loving bail. You get to keep your Screws and come back stronger, and it turns out leveling up Mega Man isn't even all that expensive. Also, bringing in a type-appropriate cavalry helps tons, and changing Mega Man's type so he can use stronger weapons is an absolute MUST.

Now let's bring Ben back and see if this plan works in the second battle, against Taurus.

What's honestly hilarious is that this game has a "5 out of 10" quality strategy RPG buried inside somewhere, but it's drowned in unintelligible nonsense and that atrocious battle mechanic.

It does appear to be a Special Attack meter! When in battle, when your active meter at the top of the screen fills up, you get a set of five options, which appears to correspond to Attack, Special Attack (menu), Item (menu), Defend, and Run. From the Special Attack menu, you get a list of options with their cost next to it. You can also recover Special Attack power (referred to in the translation as "Skill Points") by using Battery items.

So after recording Part 18, I rather abruptly no longer had access to the machine we were using to host our game, which meant I had to set up a brand new VirtualBox with a brand new ISO with a brand new save file, which meant playing through all of this again.

And when I did, after the first set of bosses, I ended up getting access to an area called "Secret Sewer", which was not there the first time around. It seems that because we didn't let Duo die during any of the earlier levels, we get a chance to rescue him and keep him permanently. Let's give it a go...

I'm almost caught up and a few thoughts. First, would leveling up Rush not only increase his energy, and thus the number of chances you can get items, but also improve his ability to get items (instead of 1/3 it would improve to 1/2)? And second, if the important characters (like Duo and Eddie) can come back despite dying, why not send them against the robot masters and deplete their special meter (I call this strategy the Zapp Brannigan)? At the very least it would give them something to do.

Definitely a possibility worth exploring. On the one hand, I suspect that his Stamina/Energy/Whatever won't increase, since Mega Man's has been steady the entire time, but on the other hand Rush could theoretically learn a more reliable Excavation technique. We shall see!

True, though the issue is more that oftentimes they just get OHKO'ed before they get a chance to land a single hit in the first place, so it just tends to waste time more than anything else. As we add more party members on the level of Duo, I may start removing the lower-strength ones, we shall see!

You would think, wouldn't you? Between giving it to Rozner Labs for the DOS games, yanking it from Minakuchi to give it to BIOX for Mega Man II, or even just their own weirdness with Super Adventure Rockman, this experimental poo poo just never seems to work out well for them.

So I know this is pretty off-topic to the thread itself (and if people have an issue with it, I'll junk the post/link), but I've been busting balls since around the new year to put together a full-scale review of MegaMan NT Warrior: Stream, the fourth season of the show (and the first not to be dubbed in English). It's taken some focus away from other things, such as this very Let's Play, and was ready to roll two weeks ago until ShoPro decided to drop a giant dong-shaped copyright flag on top of us, blocking the video until we removed three clips that were... honestly, a real shame to have to toss (we did ultimately post them to Twitter instead).

The bulk of our movie/TV reviews have been 40-45 minutes long, but Stream is dense and the review (which had a LOT of details removed for pacing) clocked in at 71 minutes, 67 minutes for the cut down version. If this is the sort of thing you guys might be into, I encourage giving it a look. If not, more episodes of Mega Man Strategy are coming at the start of the week!

Release date, primarily. We've been sticking pretty hard (outside Mega Man Gold Empire and Mega Man Strategy) with keeping the stuff we do for The Mega Let's Play in chronological order of release date, so there was a bit of a risk of plot overlap. While yes, this does end up diving into Nebula Gray and Baryl/Colonel a bit, the plots diverge hard enough that it shouldn't be too too big of a deal.

Stream is kind of an outlier too, since it tries to course-correct the wildly divergent Axess by making it a little closer to the game canon like they did with EXE.

So to explain, in case we didn't do a good enough job in the last video: whether by accident or intent, in battle Capricorn takes exactly 1 HP of damage from ANY attack, regardless of strength. If you don't have the right items, this means that beating Capricorn is literally impossible (and even worse, he automatically heals at the start of his turn), and it was recommended we use Cheat Engine if there was no other way to get by.

Thankfully, we have a number of Bombs (thanks to letting Rush do nothing at all but Excavate for several dozen episodes), and since they do exactly 25% Max HP damage to their target, this bypasses the "perfect defense" and kills him in four item uses.

SO, this means we're moving on to Aquarius, the eleventh Constellation Robot, and I think we're reaching a level where we can pretty much blast through these battles now...

This was certainly an unique game in the Mega Man series. It's a shame you guys couldn't figure out how to access those extra levels, but I suppose now someone will be encouraged to be the first to 100% this game. Maybe.

That's my ultimate hope! And that's why I decided to take some time to make this video:

How to Install & Play Rockman Strategy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wO1wJu-jnp4

There's a lot of good, juicy data kicking around in there, and I already know how to mess more with the raw data and images than I did while playing the game. My hope from here is that someone takes up the reins and keeps going, and digging, and gives us a more complete and thorough look into this weird, weird game.

If anyone here wants to dig in, you can find all the info you need in the video above and at dpad.fm/strategy!
