Since the NRA starting position is "Keep all our murder binkys and also make every teacher have one too" I counter-propose It's too late for buybacks - you can turn them in and pay a fine for having owned them or you can eat LWOP when we find you with them later.

Violent crime rates have gone down for many years straight. Right now we're at a historic low not seen since the 1940s and 1950s. We're still orders of magnitude higher than the UK, and always have been.

It is demonstrably true that states where guns are more restricted have lower rates of gun deaths.

the most fun part of gun chat is hearing about how theres "no such thing as an assault rifle" and "ar doesnt even stand for assault rifle" instead of "what do we do about the murder weapons"

The Czech Republic allows you to apply for a self-defense permit for a gun. Once passed, you automatically qualify to have concealed carry of 2 pistols. You must be 21 years or older, you must pass a written test, you must pass safety and practical tests. You must field strip your weapon down and clean it. You must pass an accuracy test to hit a target. You must pass a criminal background test and your medical records are reviewed to make sure you aren't an alcoholic, drug addict, or have psych issues. A complete medical exam is performed to insure you are of sound mind, balance, hearing, sight, etc. If you have an illness that restricts you from driving, you will probably be restricted from owning a gun. If you are intoxicated and carrying a gun, you will be arrested and lose your permit. Armor piercing and hollow point rounds are illegal. All firearms must be registered within the national database. It's a good example of a country with sensible gun laws (by our standards).

Overall rates of violent crime and homicides have gone down vastly in the past 20 years. 2/3rds of gun deaths in the US are suicide. Most gun homicides in the US are committed with handguns (like 80-90%) Mass shootings have dramatically increased over the past 20 years.

Common guesses at explaining that variance (which I agree with to a moderate degree) are: - Removing lead from paint and then introducing and removing tetraethyllead gasoline due to EPA bans - Improving parenting outcomes for kids by giving parents access to contraceptives and abortions

khwarezm posted:Holy moley, could someone explain this? Why did it rocket downwards in the 30s, then explode back up in the 60s? It did that for pretty much all violent crime and it's most likely the result of massive lead exposure to children who would eventually grow up to commit criminal acts due to damage to their central nervous system. We saw the same dramatic increases in crime and then decreases over time in other nations who added lead to their gasoline then phased it out. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead-crime_hypothesis

But for the big dip and rise again in the mid century (and not so much the current decline) was there some specific policies or events that made a big impact? Wikipedia tells me that Lead paint was only banned in the 70s, but was it's use seriously curtailed well before that? Similarly I thought Leaded gasoline was only phased out in the 70s too so wasn't it being widely used for a long time prior where the graph suggest crime was a lot lower than the 70s and 80s? Maybe the graph is misleading but it seems like really dramatic spikes and dips for factors that seem like they'd be much more long term affairs.

This paper comes to a conclusion that the lead-crime hypothesis explains somewhere around 10% of the total variance and has around a 20 year lag effect. It includes figures on lead paint and leaded gasoline over time and has methods to infer a blood lead level in children from it: http://www3.amherst.edu/~jwreyes/papers/LeadCrimeBEJEAP.pdf I mentioned multiple factors because those are two main ones that happened. I think any sort of overall trend in violent crime will be due to an ensemble of factors.

Lead damage is permanent and irreversible. The lead damage began accumulating in growing fetuses and 20 years later you see the crime rates spike, then 20 years after lead paint was banned, you see crime rates plummet, because an entire generation of people were raised without any lead poisoning enter the adult world and aren't committing crimes.

You misunderstand, I'm wondering why there was the dramatic decline in the 30s prior to the big spike that lasted almost 30 years. Lead paint, though not gasoline, was widely used at the start of the twentieth century.

People need to stop going ape over the spooky scary ARs that get used in a tiny minority of killings (But do still work on legislating them too though) and first work on handguns primarily, which are what actually get used in the largest deal of murders. I said it either in the last gun thread or in the orange man thread, people don't pull a fat rear end rifle out of their coat when some thug

People tend to commit fewer crimes when there are dramatic recessions. Families become closer and rely more on each other for mutual social support. Alcohol Prohibition also ending at that time meant far fewer arrests since people who were drinking and producing alcohol could just go on with their daily lives.

We're still orders of magnitude higher than the UK, and always have been. You have to be careful with some of these graphs because different countries report these things differently. America reports when there's a death that doesn't have natural causes, isn't a suicide, isn't an accident, etc. The UK doesn't record homicides until there's been a conviction (which is pretty reasonable when you think about it). It's something of an apples and oranges comparison.
