I just learned that millions of Americans apparently never knew what blackcurrants taste like, because they were banned from being farmed for decades:wikipedia posted:currant farming was banned in the early 1900s, when blackcurrants, as a vector of white pine blister rust, were considered a threat to the U.S. logging industry. The federal ban on growing currants was shifted to jurisdiction of individual states in 1966, and was lifted in New York State in 2003 through the efforts of horticulturist Greg Quinn.

There are a ton of gun shops around here that buy/sell but I'm guessing they will only give me about half of what they are actually worth. One of them is an old relic from that could be worth quite a bit.

Hmm. I guess I can sort of see it as having some validity in certain scenarios, it does sound largely like something that's just ripe for abuse. I can understand it as part of an asset split on divorce, so rather than sell a house, whoever is still living it pays out to the other an amount up to X, that sort of thing. But assuming that's all been settled in a reasonably fair manner (which to my mind would be where you can address disparities in who worked vs who looked after the home front), anything beyond that seems ridiculous.

AFAIK the're probably closer to Libertarians in the American political arena. So the concern is that they're the types to think government funding/support of education/environmental sectors is anti-free-market, I would assume. I'm sure the Aussies will be able to give you the proper rundown, but I fully expect "we wanted to build Rapture in the Great Bight, but the front fell off".

Darchangel posted:Watch chat: I like chronograph sand such, but I just don't see the value in anything that costs more than about $30 and doesn't do anything but tell time. I admire the craftsmanship, and the mechanical aspect, but I can spend that money elsewhere. Considering a smart watch, though. I haven't worn a watch in so long I don't know if I can deal with something hanging off my wrist again. I'd like a Speedmaster Pro "Moonwatch", but that's more to do with the whole space programme thing, I don't have any specific interest in watches per se, or have a very high opinion of people who view them as status symbols. Much like cars, in that way. If you want to buy a Ferrari or a Rolex because of the specific technical attraction to that model, or the history etc, that's great, but if you're buying one just because it's a Ferrari or a Rolex, you're doing it wrong.

It depends whether it means anything to you. If it doesn't, then sure, sell it. But if it does, it's $22k. That's £16k. Sure, I'd like to have that, but not at the expense of some kind of family heirloom that matters to me.
