I just learned that millions of Americans apparently never knew what blackcurrants taste like, because they were banned from being farmed for decades:

wikipedia posted:

currant farming was banned in the early 1900s, when blackcurrants, as a vector of white pine blister rust, were considered a threat to the U.S. logging industry. The federal ban on growing currants was shifted to jurisdiction of individual states in 1966, and was lifted in New York State in 2003 through the efforts of horticulturist Greg Quinn.

Hmm. I guess I can sort of see it as having some validity in certain scenarios, it does sound largely like something that's just ripe for abuse.

I can understand it as part of an asset split on divorce, so rather than sell a house, whoever is still living it pays out to the other an amount up to X, that sort of thing. But assuming that's all been settled in a reasonably fair manner (which to my mind would be where you can address disparities in who worked vs who looked after the home front), anything beyond that seems ridiculous.

I was about to fill in the online appeal form with 'look at the picture you idiots, that is not my car' when I noticed that this fine is 1 day off being 6 months old.

UK goons - is there a limit on these things? Should I wait a few days to appeal and try and save the actual owner of the car £60?
There might well be - I believe it's in the Protection Of Freedoms Act schedule 4.

"Where a contravention is detected remotely (such as by cameras), the landholder may request registered keeper data from the DVLA immediately and must write to the registered keeper within 14 days seeking details of the driver or payment of the parking charge."

Watch chat: I like chronograph sand such, but I just don't see the value in anything that costs more than about $30 and doesn't do anything but tell time. I admire the craftsmanship, and the mechanical aspect, but I can spend that money elsewhere. Considering a smart watch, though. I haven't worn a watch in so long I don't know if I can deal with something hanging off my wrist again.
If you're going to get a watch, either just get yourself a Casio F-91W, or something purely mechanical because you like mechanical things. I have a cheap "Alpha" brand chronograph that sort of looks like a Rolex Daytona (but isn't claiming to be one), using the Chinese "Seagull" movement (ST19 I think?), and with a glass case on the back, it looks nice enough:

I'd like a Speedmaster Pro "Moonwatch", but that's more to do with the whole space programme thing, I don't have any specific interest in watches per se, or have a very high opinion of people who view them as status symbols. Much like cars, in that way. If you want to buy a Ferrari or a Rolex because of the specific technical attraction to that model, or the history etc, that's great, but if you're buying one just because it's a Ferrari or a Rolex, you're doing it wrong.

Thoughts/recommendations?
If you have good winter tyres already, I'd get really good summer tyres with no consideration for cold-weather performance. If your winter tyres are a bit crap, a good (true) all-season may be all you need.
