Hard to believe everything in those common areas won't be damaged or destroyed at light speed. And it only takes one dopey roommate and/or lovely community manager to really screw everything sideways. I can't imagine wanting to deal with that after my 20s. I post in the OSHA thread in gbs, pfy dangerous chemicals, and games I play normally. Poke my head in others from time to time too. Usually to post Hail Satan on page 666s. General posting advice still works: lurk a thread for a while then post post post.

This is a Good Article. quote:In January, following reports that Trump had referred to Haiti and African nations as “shithole countries,” Pastor Robert Jeffress came quickly to his defense. “Apart from the vocabulary attributed to him,” Jeffress wrote, “President Trump is right on target in his sentiment.” After reports emerged that Trump’s lawyer paid hush money to the porn star Stormy Daniels to cover up their alleged sexual encounter, Graham vouched for Trump’s “concern for Christian values.” Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, argued that Trump should be given a “mulligan” for his past infidelity. One can only imagine the explosion of outrage if President Barack Obama had been credibly accused of similar offenses.

SA isnt really a culture anymore so much as a method of communication. It's not perfect but it's better than pretty much all social media, the pacing is better suited to ape brains, or mine at least. Maybe yours too, friend reader, lurker, poster.

I joined back in 07' and I don't really recall a culture beyond dudes and dudettes on the internet posting. True comedy gold content wasn't really much more common than it is today. Like the great saga threads of legend. Postings way more relaxed and I would definitely not be posting in D&D if it was still as tight assed as the lf days. 2007 was well past the wild west days of the internet so what do I know?

They're is just so much to unpack about their situation that I don't even know where to begin.

The range of topics and discussion used to be a lot broader but that dried up right around the time many of us were graduating from uni/college, which for me was ‘08. It’s all megathreads now, many that are unreadable at length and only good for scanning.. I have to go elsewhere for a lot of niche discussions but for general news chatter I find SA/D&D is still tolerable in a handful of corners.

DnD is a whole hell of a lot better as an aggregator than a Facebook newsfeed, and I don't know why anyone who grew up with the internet would trust any single source in the conventional media. I mean, I think a lot of Millenials entrust themselves to Facebook's tender, psychologically manipulative care, but we're the weirdo nerds who realise that Facebook played a pivotal role in both Brexit and getting Trump elected.

I generally agree. Facebook was never great for sharing news and opinion everyone just filters each other out. Nowadays my feed is by and large loosely acquainted strangers posting in fan groups, collector markets and niche communities. It’s great for that but not much else.

This is a really loving good article. SA is a social media platform, and each thread has a culture. I don't think it has it's own culture other than "skews introverted enough to dig up tiny niche subculture smokey backroom threads behind a ridiculous GBS front fishmonger business"
