Welcome to Goons of Fate! This is going to be an audience-participation LP of Hand of Fate 2, an action-roguelite type of game released in November of 2017. It features a game map made of playing cards (and a card game motif throughout) with minigames and multiple choices for non-combat encounters, and Arkham-style attack/counterattack combat during fighting scenes.

The story of the game (such as roguelites have stories) is a continuation of the original Hand of Fate. In that game, the player character played against the Dealer and eventually won, killing the Dealer and taking his place. Now in the sequel, the Dealer has somehow come back from the dead, and has recruited a new player character to train. The course of this game is the Dealer grooming the new player character to face and defeat the old player character. As usual with roguelites, any larger story implications are more hinted at than made explicit.

So let's get to the audience participation! First of all, you can hop into the Discord server and join the voice chat if you want to join in the commentary. Second of all, Hand of Fate 2 features Twitch integration, so you can vote on choices during encounters, play one of the minigames, and provide "gifts" to the main character. That's in quotes because sometimes gifts are negative, so the potential for trolling is rather great. That Twitch integration obviously means that all recording sessions are going to be livestreamed to my Twitch channel where voting takes place in the Twitch chat. So if you can't or don't want to join the voice chat, you're more than welcome to use text.

Recording sessions will be every Sunday at 4 PM UTC (that's noon eastern and 9 AM pacific), beginning on April 22nd. I hope to see you there!

I know like everything about the original but this one fell off a my radar a bit. I'm gonna check this out.

I thought it was, it should be fixed now.

Episode 1 - The Fool is now up. It essentially functions as the tutorial, introducing us to arguably the worst companion character.

CirclMastr
Jul 4, 2010

Episode 2 - The Magician is now up. Witness as I mistakenly believe there's a bonus condition this early, the goons are unable to get any encounter tokens, and I can't roll dice.

Man. Cleared the first real dungeon but you don't luck into a single unlock. I guess that's just Hand of Fate for you.

The sequel definitely feels like it has fewer unlocks overall, although that’s probably inevitable when they’re spread across 22 levels instead of 13. Shorter quest lines, too. Still had a lot of fun with the game though, so if you liked the first game and didn’t notice this one coming out you should pick it up.

Episode 3 - The High Priestess is now up. This time there actually is a gold token to be earned. They're really easy to get if you have psychic powers.

Hand of Fate 2 is definitely one of those sequels that is "the first game, but more of it."

There's even less reason than usual to watch Episode 6 - The Hierophant (Failure) because it doesn't succeed.

Is the 'episode 5' a typo or is this like a bonus to episode 5?

That would be a typo.

I suppose I could claim it was intentional just to see if anyone reads this thread, but I'm not that clever.

Phew. Can you do a random dungeon and chill to unlock some of your regular cards? These chance-based missions just seem exhausting.

CirclMastr

Episode 8 - The Lovers is up. This used to be one of the worst quests in the game, very difficult to win and with a nearly impossible achievement. Now it's been patched so that your companion doesn't actually carry over combat damage, making the quest much more doable (if you remember to pack food) and the achievement attainable if you heal up before the boss.

Glazius posted:

Part of the reason some of these quests are more difficult - especially the gold tokens - is that I'm bringing in cards with tokens to be unlocked rather than what's optimal. I can definitely try an endless run to break things up though.

I am kinda curious how long an endless mode run will go with twitch shenanigans active. and if twitch can pick where you go.

CirclMastr
Jul 4, 2010

Episode 9 - Endless Mode Preview is up. The long and short of it is that Endless Mode in Hand of Fate 2 is a lot less punishing in general than in the original game, and the Twitch voting just makes it really tedious between missions. After this recording had to stop (I really wish I knew what was making Windows misbehave), I went back to finish the run and it still took another 2 hours or so.

CirclMastr
Jul 4, 2010

Episode 10 - The Chariot is up, as we finally unlock one of the better companions in the game. Admittedly I'll miss Colbjorn's occasional help with the dice gambit, but his help was hardly decisive at any point so screw him.

CirclMastr
Jul 4, 2010

Episode 11 - Strength is up, as I neglect to use the better companion I unlocked in favor of someone to help with the dice gambits. His help proves to be hardly decisive. It's almost like I should have listened to my past self or something.

Episode 12 - The Hermit (Failure) is up. Also I saw an Ear Nose Throat specialist who said what I'm actually suffering from is severe migraines and I should see a neurologist. Hurrah?

Man, that's rough :( I'm completely ignorant on the matter, what treatments are there for migraines?

CirclMastr

No idea. The ENT doctor wrote me a prescription for pills that don't make the headaches go away but do make me dizzy and drowsy as all hell.

Episode 13 - The Hermit (Success) is up finally, because it's really hard to edit and upload videos when looking at a computer screen is unbearable.

And Episode 14 - The Wheel is also up. I feel like my migraines are affecting my ability to do this even once a week.

Due to various reasons, the streams for recording Goons of Fate will be held on Saturdays instead of Sundays going forward. It will still be at noon eastern. Hopefully this will allow for a more regular schedule, though the migraines are still unfortunately an issue.

CirclMastr

Episode 15 - Justice (Failure) and Episode 16 - Justice (Success) are up because I am bad at remembering things and cognitive slowness due to migraines makes remembering things even harder. It's almost like I am having trouble functioning, or something.

CirclMastr
Jul 4, 2010

Episode 17 - The Hanged Man and Episode 18 - Death are up because I can only tolerate so much sitting at a computer that I end up doing uploading and such all at once instead of in a timely manner. I apologize. Migraines are the worst.

CirclMastr
Jul 4, 2010

Episode 19 - Temperance (Failure) is up. Migraines are terrible and so is Temperance, because it takes all your food concerns and turns them up to 11.

CirclMastr
Jul 4, 2010

Episode 20 - Temperance (Success) is now up. Not shown: at least one other failure because I don't want to just have a failure exhibition of nonsense. I don't have to do this anymore, yay!

Well, not that map anyway.

Episode 21 - Devil is up, but the real Devil is the friendships we made along the way. Wait, no, that's what's in peril. The real Devil is the overwhelming sense of paranoia that screws me over. Also migraines.

Migraines don't screw me over in particular or anything, they are just generally the Devil.

On the bright side, I get to see the neurologist on Wednesday and hopefully get put on a more effective treatment plan!

The way to get the gold token is to talk to the grey dude and give him the potion that you're brewing up rather than using it on yourself.

I like the idea of gold tokens you can get from missions, but what you have to do just seems like so much guesswork and blind luck.

CirclMastr
Jul 4, 2010

Episode 22 - The Tower is up at long last. Migraines are still debilitating, much like trying to complete these late missions. On the bright side, this video isn't tagged with (failure) and today I got Botox injections for the migraines, so in three weeks I might be feeling better.

Hopefully.

As someone who's played through the whole game (almost twice), I can confirm that most of the Gold tokens are signposted pretty well, or are at least possible to achieve once you know a few tricks (looking at you, Hanged Man).

The ones I would consider the hardest are:

Justice - Requires very exact time management and a decent amount of luck with gambits on top of it. I have to get it again for my second playthrough and I am not looking forward to it.
The Devil - No hints or explanation provided and an outside-the-box tactic needed to beat it.
The Star - You have to get all twelve conspirators for this, but getting one in particular requires extreme luck on a set of gambits, and others require great luck or are otherwise hard to figure out how to get to.

And, of course, the gold token for Judgement (requiring you to have made your four main Companions Platinum beforehand by completing their questlines) is in a class of its own.
