Sounds like a well thought out plan. >TAKE SLIME Our hero posted:OK. >TAKE GAS Our hero posted:First I need an empty container. >TAKE CHIGGERS Our hero posted:OK. Curiously, the answer was "none of them". (you may also have noticed that, primitive as the parser is, it does at least recognize and accept both "GET" and "TAKE" as synonyms. This was not always a given in contemporary games) Adamant fucked around with this message at 01:24 on Apr 23, 2018 |

# ? Apr 23, 2018 02:22 |

I don't see how that could possibly go wrong. >GO NORTH Our hero posted:OK Oh. One slight problem with the interface is that since the room description is always present on screen and will always be updated when the screen changes, situations like these where events immediately send you to a different room mean the description of the room you went to will be on-screen for just a single frame, making it completely impossible to read. This can be a problem if you're not sure which room you were going to, since you just won't have time to read the description. >USE MUD Our hero posted:I don't know how to "USE" something Adamant fucked around with this message at 03:17 on Apr 23, 2018 |

It seems that at present, the dragon will wake up and attack us whenever we enter the meadow, no matter which direction we're coming from. It might be an idea to try to figure out why this is. Of course, we can always reload to an earlier state and explore from there, there's a decent number of exits we haven't checked out yet. Our current map looks like this:

>WAKE DRAGONOur hero posted:Nothing happens >SCRATCH BITES Our hero posted:BOY that really hit the spot! Well, you wanted to get us killed, so that worked out all right. The game did indeed come out after Colossal Cave, and took its fair share of inspiration from it, so we might as well try those spells: >SAY XYZZY Our hero posted:I don't know what "XYZZY" is. >SAY PLUGH Our hero posted:I don't know what "PLUGH" is. >SAY PLOVER Our hero posted:I don't know what "PLOVER" is. While Adams had played the game, our hero had apparently not, and is not familiar with these phrases. It was actually fairly common for games back then to recognize the word XYZZY, even if it the result was just telling you that you're in the wrong game or something along those lines, so I'm a bit surprised this game doesn't have the word in its vocabulary at all. >SAY BUNYON Our hero posted:BUNYON Hm. >THROW AXE Our hero posted:I'm not carrying ax, take inventory! And yeah, Adams seemingly can't make up his mind whether he wants to use the "axe" or "ax" spelling, the game keeps flip-flopping between them and I'm pretty sure the parser recognizes both.

Pressing enter takes us to whatever screen we were on when we used the SAVE GAME command. It should also be pointed out that there's no LOAD GAME function in the game at all. The only way to load a saved game is from the welcome screen that appears when you start the game, and the only way to return there while a game is in progress is to go to Hell. I’m a bit worried about them chigger bites and us Bunyoning our ax(e) into the ether... As I said in the OP, Adamant posted:Adventureland has a lot of dead man walking situations where we'll be completely unable to finish the game, and it doesn't always telegraph them all that well. I'm not going to prevent us from entering these, so if you suspect we might have screwed ourselves irreparably over, go ahead and suggest a reload to a specific earlier state. If we've been making a lot of progress since that state, just mention what you want us to redo, and I'll take care of that in one quick update. Experimentation, as well as suspecting and recognizing potential unwinnable states is such a big part of adventure games from this era that having someone sit there and yell out every time we did something that screwed us over just ruins the entire experience. That said, I'm of course not going to let you sit there banging your heads against a puzzle for ages when I know there's no way to solve it. We're going to beat this game.

My apologies, my skim-reading has let me down again! I could talk about the early years of IF for days. Scott Adams and (to me) superior adventure specialists like Infocom, Magnetic Scrolls, Artic, and my personal favourites, Level 9. But let’s not ruin the narrative thread. Onwards... EXAmine mud (wherever we left it) EXA chiggers EXA bites (probably fruitless) Uh, examine a tree, maybe? We’re a bit lacking in inventory.

Oh dear. I think it just tells us that examine is the same as look. Or I’m mistaken that Adams’ parser only looked at the first three letters? I never played Adventureland but I did play some of his later works - the name Questprobe still makes me clench my teeth involuntarily. EXAM the keys, just to rule out the possibility, and to give us something to do before we succumb to chiggerlaria again.
