zeal posted:the closest modern equivalent to what Brown tried to accomplish would be on the order of a band of radical ICE abolitionists breaking open a privately owned prison, arming all the prisoners willing to come with them, and leading those escapees to seize NORAD or a nuclear silo before threatening to turn WMDs on the continental US unless everyone gets let out of the ICE camps. and today any sort of discussion or gathering to go over a plan like that is going to be instantly spied on and data-collected by the FBI and NSA and intercepted before anyone can do anything. john brown had the opportunity to plan and act without constant surveillance, or even the scantest knowledge of assembly it's not a coincidence that 1. there's barely been any actual successful coordinated "terror" attacks in the states since PATRIOT 2. the actual successful acts of mass violence are committed by loners and shut-ins who don't talk to anyone else so our avenue for actually getting things done is, unfortunately, at the ballot box and campaigns to pressure the hell out of elected officials
