what overpaid tech genius decided to change it so that if you click on the picture instead of giving you the larger version it just takes you to the webpage the photo is on (but sometimes it isn't bc gently caress you)

Companies were suing Google for stealing their poo poo when Google cached the images and so they went with this instead of locking them out of search results.
