For the immediate future, my wife has a three hour commute. The good news is that we have 5 year old twin boys, so sitting in traffic is actually p zen. She just needs something to distract her.

She likes shows about cooking, funny news, and U.S./English history. She likes NPR stuff. But if you've got something from another genre you really love, share it: It's not all about her.

For instance, my favorite podcast is Around the NFL. It's four funny writers from NFL.com (and sometikes one of their show hosts)who are shockingly un-regulated by the NFL. They'll condemn kneeling punishments, they'll chastise their bosses and make 9/11 jokes, a few years ago they randomly had stoner rapper Lil Debbie as a guest.

Host: Alright, I've heard Lil Debbie is actually planning to be on the show today, but havent had confirmation from her people.

other guy on show: Check her Twitter?

<pause>

Host: oh, yeah, says she tweeted five minutes ago: "Hotboxing in the NFL hq parking lot." So she's coming on

Comedy Bang Bang is so drat good but I don't know how to recommend it to anybody. Half the episodes don't make sense unless you go back into the archive. They barely make sense in the first place

I used to listen to that podcast, and I really tried to get past the Zoo in the Morning, constant shtick bullshit because the topics are interesting. But then there was the Leonard Lake and Charles Ng episode, where the one dude thought that doing the CHING CHOW ME CHINESE ME PEE PEE IN YOUR COKE voice was like the absolute height of comedy and just would not shut the gently caress up with that poo poo. Haven't listened to them since. Not because I was offended or anything, it was just so painfully unfunny.

I like We Hate Movies for bad movie stuff, and Sword and Scale for true crime stuff (warning: somewhat cheesy delivery)

I Don't Even Own a Television is a monthly review of a bad book, broken into recurring segments that help with the pacing.

Uhh Yeah Dude has been going since 2006 and the nice thing about it is that there are so many episodes, you can't really run out and as you go down the list in either direction you pick up on the recurring jokes and themes and games. They go over weird news, analyze mission statements from fast casual chains, and play a game called Horse, Weed, Mind's Eye, where one has to guess which of three names are a race horse, a strain of weed, and made up. The endlessness of this podcast was what enabled me to spend three hours preparing ingredients, realizing I forgot something, going to the store and coming back, and cooking when I was just beginning to seriously learn cooking.

Then Snap Judgement is good, and I like The Ezra Klein Show, even if he doesn't believe in worker owned collectives.

Sword and Scale is majorly hit and miss. The host seems to think anyone with a mental illness is a demonic murderer sleeper agent who will kill everyone at any time and he's gotten pretty loving lazy at times.

Everyone says the episode that's literally just gross pedophile chat logs read by a creepy robot voice is the ~SPOOKIEST THING EVER~ but it's loving awful and the host plays the creepiest and weirdest prank phone call ever at the end of the episode.

IIRC the Politico Spoken Edition is like that. They even hire a voice actor to deliver the news in a somewhat monotone voice.

You see, but you do not observe.

The Dana Gould hour is excellent, it’s the only one I’d recommend actually

Other than that I listen to joe rogan’s podcast and a bunch of Apple podcasts(above Avalon, ATP, daring fireball)

Oh and for games : the DLC podcast, Dad & sons (the bunny hop guy’s podcast), Essy Allies podcast(formerly gametrailers?), Game Crunch, IGN’s Game Scoop, polygon’s Quality control(ehh...), Watch out for Fireballs

Reply All is also excellent for general internet culture

I got a bunch more I never really listen to like Joey Diaz and planet money, or The hilarious world of depression, Jay & Miles Xplain the X-men...
