What is Star Trek Online?

Star Trek Online is a free-to-play MMORPG for PC, PS4 and Xbone. The game contains both ground and space combat and is mostly set in the 25th century of the Star Trek universe. You can now live your dream of being a plucky Starfleet captain, torn from her parents at birth and raped by multiple lizardmen before becoming the youngest captain to ever graduate Starfleet Academy and assume command of her own boat of hunky young officers and explore the farthest reaches of the galaxy.

Think that's an exaggeration? Think again.

This is the kind of Mary-Sue bullshit player that infests Star Trek online.

The running man dance is like kryptonite to role players

So why the gently caress should I play this game?

The game has improved remarkably from its early days, and now ground combat is merely mediocre instead of being downright awful. The space portions of the game are very enjoyable and allow you to experience plenty of spaceship shooty-mans without the avalanche of sperg that comes with other online space based games. With that being said, the game is pretty easy and considerably more grindier than it used to be which will be explained in further detail later.

The glory days of Drozana Station before the victory of Dear Leader

The denizens of Drozana have surrendered to the will of Dear Leader, with several fleets outright declaring their defeat, although there are still some stubborn hold outs. Even today some people will literally start raging at you with our fleet tag above your head, even if you don't say a goddamn thing. They will run in fear when you invade their zones. They will scream and curse and yell at you and call you a human being bitch rear end in a top hat friend of the family in horrible broken English - which you will then promptly report as a language infraction, netting them a two-day chat suspension and maybe even a ban. Like this fellow.

However, even as one enemy is vanquished another mentally ill pubbie always arises to take their place, and our vigilance can never waver. That's where you come in. Welcome to Starfleet Dental.

Starfleet Dental? I've heard of them before!

Trendy is the Community Manager of our hearts. We miss you Trendy!

You'll remember Dental as one of the most legendary goon griefing guilds, infamous for their videos:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gwCmfLxIcw

The Dental presence in Star Trek Online has managed to stay alive through the endless grind, and you can be part of the terrifying juggernaut that is Dental/Nerds of Prey. While the flow of tears from Drozana station is waning, new sources of hilarity arise with each passing day, and you too can be a part of this. We will teach you, and you will go forth in the army of Dear Leader.

In Star Trek Online, you take on the role of a Starfleet (or Klingon or Romulan) captain fresh out of the academy. You'll be given command of your own ship and a full complement of bridge officers, and tasked with the protection of the galaxy and the advancement of science. Most of us ignore this tasking in favor of blasting pubbies to bits, but the mission-based content is there if you hate yourselfwant it!

Star Trek Online's gameplay is divided into ground and space elements. On the ground, you'll command a crew of four bridge officers, choosing a complement of skills that bolster your own as you charge across various planets, shooting all the local wildlife and punching everyone who looks at you funny. In space, you'll command your own ship, calling upon your bridge officers to hit RAMMING SPEED as you charge across the galaxy, shooting all the aliens and spraying everyone who looks at you funny with cannon fire.

Factions

There are currently four factions in the game, two of which are the main factions (Federation and Klingons), and one is a subfaction of sorts (Romulans) and subfaction for Federation (Original Series time period). Normally when you create your character you will choose a faction to go with, although if you are playing a romulan you will have to choose to either side with Starfleet or the KDF when you reach level 10. All factions have the same captain class available, however certain species or racial costume options will only be available to specific factions.

If you've seen the show you know who these guys are. Your typical 'good' faction, these guys are the largest in the playerbase and often a good starting point. The Federation gets a wide variety of vessels, with decent selections for cruisers, escorts and science vessels. Starfleet ships are typically hardier than their Klingon or Romulan counterparts, but there are only three Starfleet ships that are capable of mounting cloaking devices, and in all instances said cloak consumes a console slot.

TOS Captains

This is for the retro crowd that wants their game the sound and look more closer to the original series. Added with the free Agents Of Yesterday expansion (included in the game) players that pick this faction will have access to unique retro fx and sound, as well as a handful of unique starting missions before the story is folded into the Federation faction. This is an alternative start for those that want to join the Federation faction.

The best and most tragically overlooked faction, the KDF started with PVP-based 'bad guy' gameplay but have slowly developed into the place for cool goons to be. The ship selection is fantastic now and as of Victory is Life it looks like there might be some Klank content on the horizon. The birthplace of NoPPS.

The Romulans have become a great deal more amicable towards everyone else in the galaxy since their planet was blown up, but Cryptic couldn't be bothered to make them into a full fledged faction so they get to join with either Starfleet or the KDF. Romulan warbirds are generally quite good with an array of built in abilities, but suffer somewhat in the variety department. SINGULARITY CORES SUCK

The Dominion is back and you can play as a Jem'Hadar! This is a mini-faction that starts at level 60. You have a small stable of new Dominion ships and you ally with the Federation or KDF.

Player Classes

Tactical captains are what you typically expect, they bring the hurt and they bring it fast. They have the power to make themselves and their teammates hit harder, and to make their enemies more vulnerable to damage. Your selection of captain abilities includes stealth and grenades on the ground, and damage boosts and debuffs in space. CURRENTLY THE BEST, EVERYTHING ELSE IS PLAYABLE BUT TAC > ALL

Engineers focus on power management and tanking. Engineer captains reroute the X to the Y. On the ground, you'll be setting up drones, turrets and stations to help your team and hinder the enemy. In space, you'll have absolute mastery over your subsystems and power levels, gaining the ability to survive even the most ridiculous onslaughts and carry out sustained operations. THEY GOT BUFFED, STILL JUST OKAY

Science captains are about space magic and annoying the poo poo out of people. You'll use your abilities to point out and exploit weaknesses in enemy defenses on the ground. In space, you'll scan, burst and wizard your way to the finish line, denying your enemies their abilities and controlling their movement and systems.

Skills

Like many other games with RPG mechanics, you'll be given points to distribute into different skills as you level. Since the game focuses on dealing damage, it's generally recommended to distribute these points to get the damage dealing boosts.

A detailed guide can be found on the Wesley wiki.

Specializations

Specialization is post level 50 leveling.

A detailed guide can be found on the Wesley wiki.

Traits

Traits are abilities you can unlock from the exchange or by leveling T6 ships (available from level 40).

Now you've got your character set up, you'll need to join a fleet. There are currently three two? goon fleets in the game:

A Ton Of Current Helpful Information (courtesy of Cythereal)

Cythereal posted:

I posted this newbie quickstart guide in the old thread, seems relevant here. Updated it for ViL.

Tl;dr Newbie Advice

1. Get all your guns of a matching energy type.

2. Fill your tactical console slots with consoles that buff that energy type.

3. Click the offensive preset for your ship's power configuration.

Congratulations you're now better than 75% of the players in this game.

What are my energy types and consoles?

Phasers - Orange - Phaser Relay

Disruptors - Green - Disruptor Induction Coil

Plasma - Teal - Plasma Infuser

Tetryon - Blue - Tetryon Pulse Generator

Polaron - Purple - Polaron Phase Modulator

Antiproton - Red - Antiproton Mag Regulator

Pick what you like best, but pick one and stick with it. Yes, there's a different effect on each type and yes there's tons of variants of every energy type, but as a new player forget all of that. Decide what color you want to shoot and leave it at that.

I'm a new 50, what should I do?

1. Spend your free ship token on whatever ship you think looks cool and/or fits your play style. We're going to judge you as goons, but if you think the deep space science vessel looks neat, go with it.
1a. If you insist... for Feds, take the Assault Cruiser (if you like cruisers) or Patrol Escort (if you like escorts). For Klingons, take the Vo'Quv Carrier (if you like cruisers) or the Hegh'ta Heavy Bird of Prey (if you like escorts). For Romulans, take the Ha'apax Advanced Warbird (if you like cruisers) or Ha'feh Assault Warbird (if you like escorts).

2. Buy a set of white or green weapons of your desired energy type off the exchange. Mods don't matter. Also check your goon fleet bank, we have loads of random poo poo in there.

3. Buy a set of white or green tactical consoles of your desired energy type. Check the goon bank again.

4. Click the offensive preset for your ship's power.

This will be cheap and get you a highly functional boat that will last you for the rest of the game.

There's blues and purples and rep sets and mk 14s and lockbox ships and all kinds of other nonsense, but as a new player, don't worry about this unless you really want to. This kit will last you through 90% of the game's content fine and you'll out-dps quite a lot of pubbies in much flashier ships.

At 61, you'll get another new ship token but your selection of ships is very limited:

Fed: Exploration Cruiser Retrofit, Tactical Escort Retrofit, Long Range Science Vessel Retrofit

KDF: B'Rel Bird of Prey Retrofit, Marauder Flight-Deck Cruiser, Kar'fi Battle Carrier

Rom: T'Varo Light Warbird Retrofit, Dhelan Warbird Retrofit, Mogai Heavy Warbird Retrofit, D'Deridex Warbird Battle Cruiser Retrofit

Dom: See the Fed or KDF list per your allegiance choice.

What should you buy? If you're happy with your existing ship, keep it and pick your new ship based on what you need for admiralty (probably the LRSVR, kar'fi, or t'varo). If you decided you don't like your existing ship, pick a new one based on what you think you'd prefer.

Help! I'm a new player with lots of zen and want to buy a new ship! I've already got the unlock essentials! What should I buy?

Excellent question, and to be fair, there's no particularly wrong answer. Anything tier 5 and above is perfectly serviceable. So, here's a few guidelines:

1. Z-Store Bundles are always a good deal if you're interested in buying each ship as it is. This is particularly true for universal ships and cross-faction bundles.

2. Fly what you think looks good. This is the number one rule of being a happy STO player. If you really insist you can try to maximize your performance, but that's on you.

3. Ships come with admiralty tokens, which can be very useful, especially for new players.
3a. Don't forget to take the admiralty reward from the Temporal story arc "Time and Tide." The USS Pastak is a terrific card.

Some suggested buys:

1. T6 Battlecruiser. Available as T6 Cross Faction Battlecruiser Bundle, Arbiter Class Battlecruiser (Fed), Kurak Battlecruiser (Klingon), and Morrigu Heavy Warbird (Romulan). If you have to have a z-store ship, this is probably the best choice. It's nimble, fighty, doesn't look terrible (and can be downright pleasant with judicious kitbashing), and comes with a terrific starship trait that's well worth the grind. If you're into playing alts in multiple factions, the bundle is one of the best value buys in the z-store.

2. Cardassian Intel Ship Bundle. This is a pack of four ships that can be used on any faction - two cruisers, an escort, and a science vessel. That's four admiralty tokens for every character you make, and a fine ship of each major archetype to get you started and see what you prefer. For 6k zen, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better bargain.

3. 31st Century Temporal Ship Bundle. As above, but three cross-faction ships rather than four.

4. Romulan Dreadnought - Scimitar Class. If you like the Romulans and want maybe the highest-parsing ship in the game right now, here you go. Don't be fooled by the Scimitar being "merely" tier 5, this thing is still a beast.

5. T6 Escort Carrier. Available as T6 Cross Faction Heavy Escort Carrier Bundle, Alita Class Heavy Escort Carrier (Fed), Qa'Tel Flight Deck Raptor (Klingon), and Jhu'ael Tactical Carrier Warbird. If you want to fly a carrier, especially as the Federation, this is your stop barring lockbox options. For Feds, this is your t6 Akira.

6. Excelsior Cruiser Retrofit. A long-standing favorite ship of many Star Trek fans, this is the endgame quality version. Won't impress, but won't disappoint. Federation only.

7. Reliant Class - Advanced Light Cruiser. Also available in the T6 Cross Faction Advanced Light Cruiser Bundle. Are you one of those people who wants to fly a Miranda class at endgame? Shine on you crazy diamond, and enjoy.

Additional Basic Hints (courtesy of Asimo)
  • Turn autofire on! The tutorials at least now tell you to do this (only took them 3 years), but it's good advice to keep in mind.
  • Raise your weapon power! I personally recommend setting the power display to the third option, the four bars, so it's easy to eyeball and adjust your power levels... but 95% of the time there's no reason not to do 100 weapon, 50 shield, 25 engine/aux. Weapon power is stupidly important for how much damage your weapons do, and especially in PVE you'll have more than enough Aux and Engine power even with it minimized.
  • Dual cannons are straight up inferior to dual heavy cannons, never use them (unless you get some drops while leveling, then whatever, just replace them when you hit endgame). Normal single cannons are almost as useless, but there's a handful of gimmick proc builds that can use them. If you don't know how this would work, don't do it.
  • Where possible, get high-quality bridge officers. White, green, and even blue bridge officers are almost worthless on the exchange, and even very rare officers tend to cost a relative pittance. Try and get a good set early on so you don't get attached to the losers the game throws at you. While it's a little more expensive, try to get a stable of bridge officers with space traits and put them in your active slots. This means Humans (Leadership), Liberated Borg (Efficient, but only a c-store purchase these days), certain Saurian/Letheans (Efficient, make sure they have this since it's not guaranteed), and Romulan (from the fleet Embassy only, a little expensive, two different trait options). Romulan captains should look for the Superior Romulan Operative trait for extra crit chance and damage.
  • There are effectively no energy credit sinks in STO. There's no repair fees or anything like that, and most of the big sinks are completely voluntary (fast travel warps, for example). What this means is that if you're patient and smart, you can save up your money and eventually buy anything you want off the exchange, and many things are incredibly undervalued by the people that put them up for sale, up to and including those fancy lockbox ships. The energy credit cap upgrade should be one of the first things you buy off the c-store.
  • Be aware of the cooldowns of various powers. Usually you can keep two copies of a particular power before the shared cooldowns become longer than the power cooldowns, and while there's a few powers that have their own shared cooldowns (such as the Emergency Power to <X> engineering skills, with a 15s cooldown between) it's usually short enough that you can still have multiple versions. One potent example is the classic Cruiser setup, where you have two copies each of EPtS and EPtW and cycle them one after another every 15 seconds to keep both buffs up constantly. Of course, there's more advanced and pricier ways to manipulate cooldowns...

OK, where can I find more info?

There are various articles on the wiki that contain a wealth of more information as well as builds for different skill levels. Some information is out of date, but the majority of it is still perfectly valid. You will need to request wiki access in this thread by stating the username you have registered on the wiki.

The Borg two piece isn't a huge deal anymore but can still be nice if you don't have a Plasmonic Leech , Supremacy, or Lobi consoles to stick in your slots. The Borg console continues to be a worthwhile slot until you spend an assload of Lobi and even then it is still nice on a bunch of builds. The Zero-Point Energy Conduit from the Romulan rep isn't bad if you don't have a ton of pay to win but it's generally the first thing to get trimmed for fun clickies etc. There's a bunch of featured episode sets that synergize nicely with disruptors or phasers now as well:

Quantum Phase Catalysts console + torpedo from "Sunrise" and the Trilithium-Laced console + turret/omni from "Beyond The Nexus" if you're running phasers

or

The full Entoiled Technologies set from "Echoes of Light" and House Martok console + omni from "Brushfire" if you're running disuptors

The Temporal Disentanglement Suite console from "Butterfly" is useful for pretty much everyone and the Polaric Modulator from "Delta Flight" is pretty nice if you wanna go fast.

If you wanna auxbat beamboat you can't really go wrong with the Kurak Battlecruiser. The Emergency Weapon Cycle trait it comes with is super good too. The Romulan equivalent, the Morrigu, isn't that great in comparison because it's a 4/3 layout warbird with a singularity core and heavy weapon slot (it doesn't come with a special heavy weapon) instead of a 5/3 battlecruiser with cruiser commands.

The singularity core gimmick on Romulan ships in general hasn't aged well.

bij

The Cardassian Intel Science Dreadnought and the Sphere Builder Edoulg Science Vessel both do all of those things.

The T'laru does it without a secondary deflector and the various Vestas do it without the intel seat.

There's also the Daemosh if you wanna do it with battle cloak instead of a hangar.

SET CHAT!

There's a couple sets that synergize well with one another but they heavily favor phasers or disruptors.

Phasers!

Torpedo + Console: torpedo spread with the 2-piece will absolutely wreck shields.
Quantum Phase Catalysts from "Sunrise"
+
Weapon + Console: shoot faster, fly faster and get some nice EPS from the console. You can slot the omni AND a regular omni
Trilithium-Laced Weapony from "Beyond The Nexus"

Disruptors!

Full set! The torpedo does disruptor damage and a shitload of it. The hull pen and boost is nice and you get EPS from the console.
Entoiled Technology Set from "Echoes of Light"
+
Omni + Console The console has some nice defensive bonuses and the two piece is a big chunk of crit chance. You can slot the omni AND a regular omni.
House Martok Skirmisher Configuration from "Brushfire"

As for your main ship components:

Sto Builds posted:

The Iconian set still works, but there are better options.

Currently, the most popular option is the Fleet Colony Deflector (the one that gives a buff CrtH/ ShPen, should be 4th on the vendor list), which gives a scaling CrtH/D buff with your current HP. Up to 4% CrtH and 15% CrtD when you're at 100% HP. Can also be Re-Engineered to have mods that work better for your build.

Engine wise, the Competitive Rep engines are very good due to having a built in mini-evasive that triggers when you hit certain abilities. There's versions here that trigger off of drain/ control, weapon enhancements (like FAW/CSV/etc), and heals. I'd recommend going for the heals version, as that will give you more control of when it's active.

Core wise, do whatever you want really. Fleet Spire one works well still, Terran rep one can do ok if you're constantly in combat for a few minutes (takes 1m to build up), and the Competitive one is popular for the 3pc with the Engine/ Shield, which gives you some bonus Resistance.

Shield wise, Iconian still works, but the Competitive with the 3pc ECS is popular. Either the CrtH or MaxHP variants of the shield will work.

The first couple lockboxes and promotions actually had some effort put into them and the ships were serious improvements over the C-Store offerings. The Galor was miles ahead of any other cruiser at the time and the original bug absolutely pissed all over any other escort with better seating, inherent power bonuses, shields, impulse modifiers; everything. PVP used to be a thing and you were at a serious disadvantage without a cheesy pay to win ship on your team because Cryptic spent years refusing to stick Lt. Commander tactical seats on cruisers. The 5 Galor PVP premade was top tier griefing and I miss it.

None of that was necessarily good for the game but boxes offered some fantastic ways to wring tears from the pubby population. That was all years ago and lockbox exclusive loot has steadily declined in quality with every box though there have been a few gems here and there like the D4x and T'Laru. The vast majority of box ships and gear are slapfighting somewhere between middling and rock-bottom for loving uselessness and the last few Discovery focused boxes have been horrendously lazy garbage.

Don't buy keys with real money. Don't open boxes. Don't buy keys with EC. Don't open boxes.

bij
Feb 24, 2007

If you need Lobi, of course you're gotta open some boxes but expectations for actually getting something nice should be zero. There's actually some fun stuff in the Lobi store but none of it is necessary and it is all waaaaaay less impactful than it used to be.
