Also, they seem to have finally fixed Romulan leveling.
They also fixed klankroms not being able to get klingon fleet ships. I guess Cryptic bothered to fix it because they weren't actually klingons.

Also hey a new thread.

It's the DS9 expansion?

Yeah it's really obvious the mission was supposed to be in at the launch of the expansion but it wasn't finished on time.

Phased polarons are the best polarons weapons by the only metric that matters, in that they look the best.

Asimo
Sep 23, 2007

The best right now are probably those sensor-linked phasers/disruptors from a box or three back, but antiproton are still as good as before and far easier to get a full set of. Both of them have constant passive bonuses so they get to ignore all the proc nerfs Cryptic's done.

Asimo
Sep 23, 2007

Nah, that's handy but it's still basically just a turret that doubles as an omni beam, and once cryptic does the bugfix it can't be used with other set omnis so it isn't game changing there.

Does mean it's one less slot to gold if you're using both polaron cannons and beam layouts though.

Considering how quickly this was announced after VIL's launch and how abbreviated VIL and the gamma quadrant stuff was, a part of me wonders if a few months ago CBS went to Cryptic and very firmly asserted that the franchise is going to revolve around STD now and they drat well better put it front and center as advertising for the show. :tinfoil:

Honestly at this point I think every system had changed or added wholesale since F2P, up to and including the rendering engine. It's basically an entirely different game. And for all the bitching that goes on, the core leveling experience is actually pretty fun and the endgame is fairly relaxing and casual as long as you don't go and try to mega-grind.

I definitely suggest making a new character (of whatever faction really) and experiencing it from the start though, at least until you're re-acclimated with the gameplay.

Asimo

The real benefit of flying a warbird is being able to slap on the shield absorptive frequency generator console. Even after being nerfed a half dozen times it still makes you basically immortal to anything in PVE that doesn't carve hull directly.

But yeah, in general singularity cores are crap and the gimmicks aren't worth it. Luckily you get allied ships now, so who cares.

I kinda hate to admit it, but the vor'ral is pretty great. Good boff layout, good console layout (on the fleet version anyway), it's super nimble by battlecruiser standards just like the vor'cha, it has the full specialist ability so it isn't immediately obsolete like the last few releases, and it has one of the best canon skin options.

Klingons just keep getting hosed.
This is why I'm glad I went klankrom, now I can get no new ships from two different factions. :smug:

I remain impressed that Cryptic has repeatedly and heavily nerfed ways to earn ship mastery (added cooldowns to patrols, easy as that is to avoid, effectively eliminated red elerts, etc)... except that they obviously intend you to earn it through queues instead, and apparently have forgotten that almost every queue released in the past five-odd years is full of timed segments with respawning enemies that don't give any XP. :what:

Also it's hilarious how rushed this "expansion" is. Two missions, both of which are basically plot-free enemy shooting galleries, and one queue. And I guess even the new tutorial is basically identical? They so got turbofucked by CBS, didn't they.

Mondian posted:

Very true, however, you'd imagine that excess dil would get turned into keys and bring down the price of some ships. But the last 2-3 ships that got added to infinity box are still bonkers expensive.
The only way ship prices will go down is if Cryptic raises the drop rates from the boxes, and that sure isn't happening. They're just going to keep slowly inflating otherwise since most people who open boxes stop when they get their first boat, the number of players with billions of dilithium to waste is slowly dropping due to various nerfs to dilithium gains and the slow bleed of older players, and the simple fact there's basically nothing else to spend energy credits on.

It's kind of dumb and counterproductive of Cryptic too, since part of the reason the game did so well back during the romulus and even delta rising expansions was because you could actually afford the special lockbox stuff through normal gameplay. Slowly and with a bit of effort, but it was still achieveable, so the casual players got to be happy and the turbo whales got to make their space dollars. But that's basically impossible nowadays, and I don't think Cryptic realizes the end results of this.

Cythereal posted:

I think it's pretty obvious they were all set to continue with Victory is Life. They'd just majorly shaken up the Dominion and started them on the process of being less fascist, made communication with the Hur'q possible, and left themselves some loose ends with the fek'lhri and other Gamma Quadrant stuff. Probably some good Klingon political intrigue between J'mpok and Martok, too.

I think CBS came up out of the blue and demanded it be all Disco all the time now, and that caught Cryptic flat-footed. And it shows. We don't even get Fed races besides humans and vulcans for STD because no other recognizable Trek races have appeared in STD yet.

Honestly, I'm surprised they didn't hand out a free Crossfield to everyone just to hammer the point home.
I wonder just how many missions worth of dominion content got suddenly shelved to never see the light of day again, let alone whatever other Jem Hadar boats might have been in the works. It's doubly hilarious since people were already anxious about romulans basically being abandoned due to the move to being able to use allied faction stuff, but now even klingons seem to be left in the cold since they're incredibly horribly written pure antagonists in Disco.

Asimo
Sep 23, 2007

Yeah, I have no proof to back it up but I am 98% certain it came about because CBS is doubling down hard on STD (to get subs up for their streaming service, to try and reverse a drain in viewership from S1, whatever) and since STO already exists they want to use it as "free" advertising. And since license agreements are bullshit Cryptic suddenly found themselves stuck with having somewhere around six months to churn out some content for a series that basically has a serial plot poorly suited for an MMO, adds nothing to the larger setting (and arguably takes a lot of potential away), and has almost nothing worthwhile to use for the non-federation factions (since the Klingons are unrecognizable and CBS sure as gently caress won't let them use Romulan stuff before it's shown/defined in the series proper). Doing an STD-themed newbie tutorial and a handful of fed-focused flashback missions is probably the best they could really do in the time they had.

I really, really don't envy the Cryptic staff right now.

Asimo
Sep 23, 2007

It probably explains the out of nowhere addition of T6 reps too. They're absurdly simple to add compared to mission content, aren't too onerous for long time players, and have enticing rewards (fleet ship modules! cosmetic shields!) to try and keep people from giving up before the holiday stuff begins. Pretty clever there, to be honest.

And unrelated, the disco captain UI is pretty nice locking. Or at least I think so. Grats to the UI guy there.

Asimo
Sep 23, 2007

Honestly the only real problem Coliseum has it that it should have been two missions, probably splitting up before and after the escape. It's just a super long slog as it is, and I'm pretty sure it's the longest mission by a good margin, except maybe one or two of the Dyson sphere ones.

Well, the only problem aside from horrible scripting bugs, but that's a given for every old mission.

Yeah the only real issue with the mastery grind is there's literally no other real way to grind it up except doing Argala (or some similar patrol) over and over. The red alerts were nerfed into the ground and aren't even regularly available now, while every queue is full of timed sections with infinitely respawning enemies that don't give XP/Mastery. :geno:
