Finally at present day after binging this thread. Glad to finally catch one of Id's LP's live after reading them on the LP archives for years. I'm especially glad to catch Id playing one of favorite series of all time; it's been a blast to see Id's take on this quirky little series.

Also, Id, I remember at the end of the I am Setsuna thread where you said that it was unlikely that would do another LP just because of life. Well, here we are 3 LP's later. I guess what they say is true...

No one stops. Ever.

Man, I'm going to feel like a clown if someone else already thought of that one

If I recall, Mighty No. 9 wasn;t exactly the smoothest release and he didn't respond super well to criticism.

Mighty Number 9 was after Inafune left Capcom. Capcom was having its searing hatred episode while Inafune was there, if I understand correctly.

Yeah, the release of Might No. 9 was garbage, and Inafune handled it poorly. But all I was saying was Mighty No. 9 was after Inafune left Capcom, and therefore probably wasn't the reason Capcom was trashing its own business.

The reason for that, as far as I understand, was that inafune was the one who pushed them towards the of westernizing their series, aka the decision that got us DmC: Donte may Cry.

I also heard, but not confirmed, as with the above, that he was behind a lot of their worst decisions at the time (such as the in disk dlc fiasco)
But, again, that later bit is just rumors.

Oh! I didn't know either of these things. Welp, glad I know who to blame for DMC: DMC!

Persona tends to play fair with the enemy compositions. Shin Megami Nocturne has a few random-battle demon compositions that will just murder you into the ground on their first turn if you don't know exactly what each demon is capable of and their weaknesses.

And sometimes you throw a damage all enemies spell at them, and oops, they reflect that element, and your main character eats about three times his life total, and you just lost two hours in the labyrinth of Amala, and you feel bad because you are bad, because you already knew they reflected wind...

yes

Alternatively, the enemy just ambushes you, and the very first thing they do is cast mudo on your main character and you die instantly. That time, I only lost 10 minutes!

That this actually needs to be pointed out as exceptional rather than as the rule makes it better than basically every other JRPG already, to be fair. In other games, it's stranger to find a boss who isn't immune to everything. SMT bosses normally allow most thing short of insta-death.

I can only think of one boss that's known for absolutely spamming beast/dragon eye; that being Mot in Nocturne. Other bosses use them, but only Mot will use it multiple times in the same turn. And almighty resistant enemies are always special encounters, almost always being a story significant boss or bonus boss.

On the same note, when I played through Nocturne and got to the end game, I had decided I had suffered enough, and decided to make a bonkers-busted final party of Metatron, Beelzebub, and Shiva, all with Victory Cry, Pierce, and some other dumb endgame moves. Then I fought Noah and felt dumb, because I only had one move of each elemental type, and there were none on the demifiend. It just became this huge slog of me doing a little damage to him, while he did basically nothing. It was a good time. At least the rest of the end game went by easily.

Also not to forget that Amon is really easy to miss in this game. I played this game after beating Covenant and I missed getting Amon, I just used Chernabog for the endgame.

I missed a bunch of these sidequests when I played, I was much more through with Covenant.

There actually is a lot of Koudelka-level obtuseness in Shadow Hearts, it's just that it's mostly confined to the sidequests. At least with Amon, it makes sense in retrospect why you can't get him after the fight (it only happens once, doesn't matter of you get the stone later), but there is one sidequest in particular that is extremely obscure. In fact, I thought there were no in-game hints about it until this lp. I proudly admit that I had a guide open for that sidequest.

Yeah, it was horrendous. Everyone did a pretty god job of covering some of the absolutely awful decisions, but to go get the full experience, you should check out the LP HardDiskD linked. It does a real good job of taking apart Dragon Song.

Guys, stop reminding me of the mythical, long lost golden age when Konami made games. It's making me sad to remember that we won't ever get any more castlevanias, suikodens, metal gears*...

*gently caress NO DOES METAL GEAR SURVIVE COUNT

Honestly, I would forgive Konami for a lot of the crap it's pulled over the past couple years if they started making real vidya games again, and not pachislot garbage. Oh well, I guess I'll put that in my hilariously unrealistic dreams box, along with Shadow Hearts sequels and the death of EA, Ubisoft, and other such companies...

I just really want a Suikoden II remake with a localization doesn't use punctuation like it'll go extinct if you don't every sentence with 10 exclamation marks. Or one that's missing critical songs. Or one that doesn't forget to translate some of the lines. Or one that has more than 5 or 6 people that worked on it really

Yeah, this game does borrow Koudelka's obtusness in spades, but at least it keeps it confined to the sidequests. I have quite a few things I'd like to say about one of the ones that Id hasn't gotten to yet, and the thing I really want to say about it I probably can't say till the literal end of the game, because I'm not sure if it's a spoiler (so it probably is).

Nice! Where did you get the last few? Of off those stupidly rare enemies in the ancient ruins. More relevantly, How many other places were there to grind for earth energy? I don't remember having problems with earth energy when I did my playthrough, so I suspect I got lucky or did some grinding in China.

At least it's Earth that's the difficult one to grind for, and not fire or something.

I seriously wonder what the spirit of bronze was supposed to be in the original Japanese. Also, is this thing going to be used at all? Because it's not like this game was challenging to begin with, but hoo boy does the final fusion break what little left that's thrown at you.

I mean, if Id was just using Amon to deal with anything vaguely threatening, then he certainly will Seraphic Radiance to pulverize what ever "difficult" things are left.

I honestly didn't find SH 1 or 2 too difficult, even on modern technology and it's inherent latency. I think I game-overed all of once in SH1, right at the beginning of the game before I really understood how badly berserk fucks you up. In 2, I only game-overed twice (at least in the main missions. Probably some more in the side quests. looking at you, tower of man), and one of those times was because I pulled a powered-up reverse devil off of Lucia and instantly went from completely fine to the entire party getting petrified or paralyzed. So not really my fault, except for the part where I put the accessory that powers up Lucia's tarot cards on and actively used the ability, because I'm a sucker for random bullshit (I totally kept doing it too). Maybe a lifetime of music has left me with good rhythm?

Or three crucifixes, honestly. Most of these fights sound infinitely harder, or at least more annoying, without status immunity. I bet the endgame would be just as challenging (if even more of a slog) if you went straight into the final dungeon without doing any sidequests except to get 3 crucifixes.

Since I'm a loser who can't stand to miss content in an RPG, I had a FAQ open and got the good ending for my one play through. Like other people said, I was really surprised at how understated Alice's death was. like, wow. It's far more moving that way, IMO.
