This month's artist is not a singular one but rather a group! CLAMP is a team that started over thirty years ago by a group of college students that made yaoi doujins and original manga and while it started with eleven people, it eventually shrunk in 93 to the core team of Ageha Ohkawa (Writer, Storyboarder, Media Relations), Mokona Apapa (Character designer, colorist and lead artist), Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (background and assistant artists). They have continued this four-people team since then and have declined to hire assistants due to how synchronized they are, something quite rare in the industry. Cardcaptor Sakura Their biggest success. Released in 96, this manga talks about clumsy middle-schooler Kinomoto Sakura accidentally freeing several magical "Clow Cards" in the world after opening a Grimoire. After being pressed by the magical guardian Kerberos, she sets out to catch those cards as a Magical Girl! It's a cute and lighthearted story with a great focus on the characters and their relationship. Magic Knight Rayearth Three high schoolers (Hikaru, Umi and Fuu) are on a school trip to the Tokyo Tower when suddenly they are summoned to another world! Called by the people of the Fantasy World of Cephiro and accompanied by a cute creature (and future CLAMP mascot) Mokona, they must save the Princess Emeraude and defeat the evil and really really sexy dude Lord Zagato. Rayearth owns a lot and it's probably one of the first manga to fuse the "shojo" and "shonen" genres, combining elements of each in a high fantasy adventure that still has a big focus on the relationship and friendship between the girls. XXXHolic Despite the name this isn't a porno. This series is about a young man, Watanuki, who is haunted by ghosts and spirits since he was a little child. After almost being chased by a group of them, he ends up in a shop owned by the mysterious witch Yuuko who grants people's wishes as long as they "sacrifice" something for her. Watanuki then becomes Yuuko's assistance in exchange to have his 'ghost plague' rid of, and from then on witnesses several strange cases of people who come to the shop and want their own wishes granted... Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle I'm gonna be honest it's been years since I read this one and I had no idea what the plot was about and I barely remember it but it's a CCS alternate universe or something like that??? I'll reread this for sure.

The CCS opening in spanish will always have an special place in my heart even though it was used for the three seasons and therefore replaced the best OP (Platinum). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sh59AvisoZ4&t=1s

I enjoyed XXXholic as the irreverent magical adventures of a witch and her grumpy schoolkid assistant. I know it had some chapters connected to the rest of the weird semi-connected universe they have going on in Tsubasa. How weird does the other stuff get?

Wark Say posted:Ohkawa? Was she the one who did the brunt of MK Rayearth? She's the main writer of everything. Back when Tsubasa was running, the others in Clamp had no idea what was going to happen because she never told them anything.

Is that who I blame for all the shipping between adult characters and elementary school characters? Because it's not a CLAMP story without that. I'm not just here to jerk on CLAMP though. I do wanna say that I enjoyed Kobato and the sort of limited scope it had. There was a lot of restraint on the magical side that I felt let the personal relationships shine all the more bright. It had the good stuff of CLAMP (focus on simple daily life things, cheerful stuff, wistfulness, etc.,) with the least bad CLAMP stuff. It was worth watching for me.

CLAMP has my admiration because they have the rags to riches story of beginning drawing fan comics and ending up mainstream and they seem to have worked out how to do what must be fairly lucrative side ventures that don't require the high energy and time investment of publishing ongoing mangas, primarily by providing character designs for anime projects (the most well-known case of this probably being doing the character designs for Code Geass). That's just not something I hear about mangakas typically doing, so it's a nice side hustle they've got going.

You failed to mention that MKR also features giant magical animals that turn into giant magical robots that the girls pilot. It has everything.
